I posted in the kids and parents section in a post called "sad update" I subbed at a school that does not want to give me a bathroom key. Everyone is mad at me because I may need to use the bathroom during class time. No one understands. I would like to go talk to admin. or someone higher up and say that I have an understanding of the ADA Open Original Shared Link . I'd like to point out where in the ADA it states rights for celiac patients. Can anyone help me please? I posted the site where I found the ADA in blue above. Could you please read through it and see where it may state Celiac patients rights as it pertains to teaching in a classroom? Please let me know what I may say to a principal at an elementary school or high school that would convince them to be supportive of my needs for using the bathroom and providing coverage for my classroom so that I can use the bathroom should I need to. I have a medical note, but it is not working. Teachers give me looks of hate when they hear they may have to watch my class if I need to go. I really need your support and wisdom from this forum. Thanks so much. I really want to do my job as a substitute teacher but am receiving no support or understanding from the schools where I am trying to work.

Open Original Shared Link
I found this under the ADA, but I need your help. I want to go to the high school office and ask if they will cover a class if I need to use the bathroom. It would be good to go with a copy of the ADA and make reference to the part that applies to my situation. Can anyone look at the ADA listed here and help me find where it would pertain to my situation? Thanks so much!

- Always read labels and pick up a few good books with words of what to look for. It is hard at first. Stay strong and learn about cross contamination. You will have to teach the people you live with and make some changes in your kitchen. Eating out is now quite hard, but can be done. You may want to skip it for a while. Many people are dairy and soy sensitive as well and may have other issues too. Keep coming here. There is lots of help.

It doesn't sound like celiac. I hope you find the answer soon . Hugs. The fever is not usually a part of celiac. My dd screamed in k that her bones hurt, all the time. No one believed her. It must really hurt to grow.

I don't want to go back to this school because they treated me so poorly. The teacher I subbed for was very rude to me at the gym and treated me like a criminal. I think they are all crazy. However I want to sub for other HSs in this district. One school has posted by their door a sign saying we abide by the ADA and then the district reps phone number. This school has a very strict bathroom policy for teachers. Teachers are NOT allowed to go to the bathroom during class, period. If they need to go, they are not allowed to ask their neighbor to help watch kids, but must call the office for help. Do you think I should call the number and ask what I should do? I like this school and it is closer to my home. But this strict policy REALLY stresses me out. I really would love your thoughts.
How do I get support from the ADA? I found the website online. Is celiac written any where as covered? I could not find it on their website. Please share where to find this info so that I can share it with the district.
Thanks for helping me.

I still have some issues sometimes and have started to have panic attacks again. I hate it. Any advice? I sub teach and am not sure this is a good job for me since a teacher is only supposed to go during breaks or recess. This really stresses me out. I will see my gastro dr. later this week to go over yearly blood work. I don't know if I should mention this or not. I think coffee may still do it. But sometimes I still have issues in the morning when I've had no coffee. So I just feel at a loss. Please share any ideas you may have. I seem to have dumping syndrome many mornings.

I wont go back there with no support and understanding. I have found some other schools that are more understanding. Silly question but what is the ADA?

Hugs back. Thanks for caring. Please say a prayer or send positive vibes that I'd find a safe kind work environment. I just don't know why it is sooooo hard. Sometimes you just want to give up and then wish celiac on all their family for endless years to come. Not really. But for this lady, sorry it entered my mind.

The teacher I subbed for wrote me a threatening message after I wrote a nice letter to the principal and called the teacher. The politics at this school are so sad. What discrimination. I will never sub there again. The teacher wrote me to never contact her again. I have been subbing since 91 and have never encountered this. Amazing. We need to keep standing up for ourselves. Sometimes it costs us sub jobs. But so what. I just want to encourage everyone to keep advocating for our rights. This week I got no sleep and feel so sad. But I know someday I'll make a difference for celiac kids and adults. Read my previous post from last week.

Not sure an "allergy Action Plan" works for an "as needed" employee. Celiac isn't an allergy either. I still think just speaking to the employer would be enough.
I tried speaking to her. It did not work. My best friend from my knitting group thinks I should get a medical note now since she wont listen to reason and then speak with the principal. She is the only person I report to. I could borrow a key from the neighboring teacher, but in a celiac emergency, that is not good. Sometimes they are out of their class for a prep period. So will call my doctor tomorrow. He knows this secretary from our tennis club. Small world. Hopefully with the note, she will bend. I like this school. It will be a bummer to not sub there over a bathroom key. There are way too many subs here so no one cares to loose a sub.
Thanks for your ideas, support and thoughts. And believe me, I'd love to tell her where to go. I'll just save that for here.

The students have their own bathrooms but the bathrooms are locked up unexpectedly if a students messes them up and then the students have to wonder the school to find one that is unlocked. Pretty crazy. Anyhow, that is not my issue. Do you think I am in the right to fight for a bathroom key considering I have celiac disease with current issues? And how do I nicely yet firmly go about it? With a medical note?

I subbed at a high school today and loved the kids but had a strange experience with the school sec, She will not give out bathroom keys to subs!!! She says subs can use the single bathroom in the school office and that is all. I have been having issues lately and this will not do. This is a huge school, spread out. My class may be seriously a half mile from the the bathroom she is offering. My neighboring teacher told me to get a medical note to try to override her. I'm not sure even a medical note will break her because she is hell bent on making sure I don't have a bathroom key. I will see my gastro. in 2 weeks and ask for the note. My dh thinks I should go to the principal and tell him my situation. What do you think I should do ??!!!! Ug!

Thanks everyone!
I think the general population has a 1 in 100 chance of getting it and first degree relatives have a 1 in 25 chance of getting it in their life.

I would try to be understanding. What if that was your child? Wouldn't you be glad that there was a policy? I was talking to our school kitchen worker and she made an interesting observation. She said that most kids, all kids throw away most of their lunch at school. She said kids need very little food at school They just want to get it done with and go play. With that in mind, think of lunch as a snack and don't stress it so much. Send some nice fruits and and snacks. But feed him a big lunch when he gets home. That is what my kids do and they aren't gluten-free. at school. They eat mostly gluten-free here because that is all I fix.

I don't use conditioner sometimes and just use my dd's detangler. It works better than conditioner most times for me.

I seem to get acid reflex feelings after I eat the 2 foods together. Any ideas on how to quiet my symptoms? I love tomatoes but don't want indigestion all afternoon.
-
I always say when in doubt, make it at home if possible. I'm funny that way.

I can't eat cheese and I can't absorb a lot of fats, frys, red meats, processed gluten-free stuff. Sends me to the bathroom. Maybe you should lay off anything fatty and see it it goes away.

I can now drink white wine. So I have some everyday. Probably more than I should. Give it time and try white wine when you are better.

I love the taste of Petes but recently we bought a bag of Pete's coffee and for several days I got the dumping effect each morning. I am able to drink Costco's store blend that is made by Starbucks. Does anyone else have an idea as to why this may be?

Has anyone else had trouble with their nuts that say g on them? I also had some dried mango that I assumed was gluten-free. Does anyone have any thoughts? I had a lot of dumping effects the next day.

We went to Fog Harbor, The Daily Grill and Sausalito's Crab House and Prime Rib. I was able to find something gluten-free at each one. I do suggest these restaurants. The best was Nordstrom Cafe. The best service and they really cared. I hope this helps someone else on their gluten-free journey in SF. Also the Mariposa Bakery was good for bread and rolls. Yumm.

Any suggestions for a family? We'll be there for 2 days. Please suggest any places that are good for a celiac to eat at. Thanks a bunch. Really need the help! We have 2 kids. Not pizza please.
