  1. i have to agree......

I just tell people its a house rule and when I break it I get sick.

Do you drink? Why not suggest a bottle of wine or if not flowers ???

I agree with gfp...just be honest and suggest that she bring something like a drink, flowers, etc. Something you know 100% for sure will not allow for any CC! I have been up front and honest w/ my friends in this capacity b/c I fear CC since I've had it happen so much and so often before making "house rules" for the sake of my health. My friends have been very receptive and understanding. They will offer to bring wine or chips and salsa, gluten-free ice cream, etc.

    Good luck!

  2. Okay! Thanks for all the good suggestions. I usually just do what you do Momma Goose (Lisa) in keeping a bag of Bob's Red Mill here, Rice Flour there. But.....i'm learning more gluten-free recipes and it would make more economical sense to mix up a big batch of gluten-free flour to keep on hand.

Thanks again for helping me out and THANK YOU for explaining what a "part" is. That was driving me crazy not understanding what that was.

Lisa: I'm doing good. Thanks so much for asking. But I miss NC sooooo bad! :(

SC is okay, but it's just NOT home (NC). Hopefully the job angels will shine down on me and bring me home SOON......Hope you're doing wonderful!!

  3. Ohhhhh, now it makes sense! ;)

    So my next question is:

Have any of you made up these gluten-free flour mixes to keep "on hand"?

    More importantly:

Do you have to keep it in the fridge or freezer or is a really good airtight container okay??

You guys are wonderful, thanks again for all your help. Otherwise no telling what disaster would occur in my kitchen.

  4.:huh::unsure: This is what I look like right now so no, I still don't get it. HAHA!

    For example:

Bette Hagman's Basic gluten-free Flour Mix says:

    2 parts rice flour

    1 part potato starch

    1 part tapioca flour

    Her Bean Flour mix:

    1 part garfava bean flour

    1 part sourghum flour

    1 part cornstarch

    1 part tapioca flour

Thanks Andrea for trying to tutor me on this... :)

  5. My dear Patti:

You ALWAYS come to my rescue....I think you were put on this earth to be my guardian angel or mentor or something of that nature! I really mean that.

Potato Buds is a great idea....thanks so much. I've never used them before so i'll have to check it out!

Glad you like my new pic. I think it looks like i'm dancin on a gluten-free waffle, what do you think???

  6. I work with Autistic children and many parents choose to put their autistic child/children on a gluten-free/CF diet.

Well...our CEO came to me this morning and said: "I though you might be interested in this since you have to eat gluten-free". He presented me with a book called "Special Diets for Special Kids Two". It's by Lisa Lewis, PhD.

It's got some good recipes in there and some good tips on how to keep a gluten-free/CF kitchen, as well as some other resources and such.

I know there are some of you who are "mommy's" and you've been looking for kiddie snacks, school lunch ideas, etc. You might want to check the book out. I looked it up online as I think I might purchase my own copy and Amazon seems to have it at the cheapest price. Haven't checked to see if any libraries carry it yet.

    Anyhow, hope this is helpful!

  7. I initially got an e-mail back from Kristi Goodman at GM stating they apologized and that they would send me a check to re-imburse me for the box of Cocoa Puffs that I had bought.

Today in the mail is my "check"....What they sent me was 2 coupons. One coupon is for one FREE general mills product the other coupon is for $1 off any general mills product.

It states on the coupons that I can use the coupons for any of the following:

Big G Cereal Products (yeah right)

Betty Crocker Products (have no clue about this one)

    Bugles (yuck, just my opinion)

    Chex Mix (HAHA)

Gold Medal Flour ( ARE YOU KIDDING ME???)

    Nature Valley Granola (Try again)

Pop Secret (Not sure about this one either, I use orville reddenbacher 94% FF popcorn)

Does anyone know if there are any gluten-free products out there on this list??? Oh yeah, I can figure out the obvious ones on my own. HAHA!!

  8. Hey Courtney:

I've only been able to find the Progresso Mushroom and the Progresso Wild Rice soups. I think I found them the last time at Publix and I cleaned out the shelf b/c they have been so hard to find. I guess if I'd get off my lazy shell I could "ask" the grocery stores to order it...

I've looked for the Health Valley brand of soups but haven't seen those either. Someone told me today that our Earthfare will order for us so maybe we should get together and comprise an "I want" list :P & then head to Earthfare to smile pretty :D and see where it gets us.

  9. Hey cricketw:

    WELCOME to the boards!

Just wanted you to know that I too have had the same experience with people saying to me:

"oh wow, you should lose a ton of weight now".

I just want to scream when I get this response. It is so frustrating! Especially when you're one of the ones with celiac that has GAINED weight since going gluten-free and you're working so hard to shed the pounds. *sigh*

Anyhow, good luck to you with Weight Watchers. How long have you been doing WW? I tried that a few months ago but I don't think my body was ready yet if that makes sense. I am thinking about starting WW again and see if I have better luck this time around. I'd love to hear your thoughts. PM or e-mail me anytime!

  10. Yep--it's Clemson! My in-laws live there and got the whole family--25 of us--together for a big family pic, and then we did individual families. Pretty campus!!

That's cool. I currently live in Columbia but i'm a Dawg fan so i'm the minority any way you look at it around here! HAHA!

My Uncle was big into Clemson...I used to visit them in Seneca from time to time...and I also have friends in Walhalla!

    Have a great night!

  11. Thanks for sharing! My parents live in ATL. It's always great to hear of new places that are safe to eat at down there. A great thai place that my parents go to often and that I MUST go to everytime i'm in town is:

Phuket Thai Restaurant (everyone makes fun of the name b/c it sounds like a dirty word :o )

    (404) 325-4199

    2839 Buford Hwy Ne

    Atlanta, GA 30329

The shopping strip thingy where it's located isn't exactly the nicest looking and may scare some initially but I promise it's a great, clean and Gluten Free place to eat. The food is DELICIOUS!! The owners are wonderful too!! My parents are "regulars" and so are their gluten-free friends....Check it out sometime!

  12. Wow...this is one of those questions we could sit around and talk about for hours b/c the list is so long for how this forum has been so helpful to each of us. I don't even know where to start....but i'll try:

First and foremost I would have to say that there are some WONDERFUL people on this forum. It's such a pleasure to come to this forum and to be able to talk with someone else who TRULY understands celiac and all that one can go through with this disease. It is so great to come to a place where people are "johnny on the spot" to your questions, concerns or if you just need some support. Everyone is so helpful and giving. I have made some great friends thanks to this site and for that alone I will be forever grateful! Thank you to everyone who shares their knowledge, their insight, their courage, gluten-free products you've found, recipes, etc. EVERYTHING is sooooo helpful!!!

The top 10 things I can think of off the top of my head in trying to answer this question:

    1. Where else can you go and talk about diarreah, gas, bloating???

    2. Where else can you go and admit to everyone and their brother that you were a moron for glutening yourself?

    3. Where else can you go when you've been in your kitchen for a really long time trying to cook something and you need HELP!!!! And fast!!!???

    4. Where else can you go and talk about gaining weight including all the details about fat rolls, having to buy bigger sized underwear, having to buy maternity pants b/c you're so bloated you can't fit into anything else, etc.???

    5. Where else can you go and ask for help in trying to find the hidden gluten?? You know it's somewhere.

(Thank you GreenFingeredGaelic for helping me to see the hidden gluten in my wood cutting boards, DUH)

    6. Where else can you go to find such awesome unending support????

    7. Laughter, Laughter and more laughter!! (I think even GFP has even laughed a time or two) :P

    8. Links to gluten-free products

    9. Safe food lists

    10. Patti for being my personal hygiene product consultant, especially with regards to our unruly hair & sharing ideas on which products are safe that can tackle our manes! Oh...and of course, Nini & the newbie packet she put together!!!
