  1. "I find, too, that if I'm eating healthy proteins, veggies and fruits (also some potatoes and rice), I don't have to watch what I eat at all".

I too have had luck with trying to stick to meats, veggies and limited amounts of potatos and rice....I try to limit my junk food but i'll admit since going gluten-free I crave sweets more than I ever did before. It's WEIRD!

I agree and just said the same thing on another post, that you have to find what works for you!

    GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!

Thanks again for all the great info!

  2. EVERYDAY!!!

In fact in another thread about exercise we were also discussing this....it's very frustrating I know!!

    Portion control, exercise, WATER, etc....

Some people are doing Weight Watchers, some others are doing South Beach Diet, others are seeing a nutritionist....you just have to find what works for you.

Good luck and feel free to post anytime so we can all support and encourage each other!

  3. CALORIES BURNED IN 30 MINUTES OF ACTIVITY:

    Bicycling:

    leisurely/moderate: 300

    fast w/o coasting: 450

    Walking:

    3 mph: 124

    4 mph: 188

    5 mph: 300

I looked this up too! Great minds think alike.... :P

"when you walk you keep your heart rate in your fat burning zone but when you cycle your heart rate goes up and you leave your zone to convert your fat in to muscle instaed of loseing weight".

This is something I never thought of.....thanks!

My dog has to be walked daily regardless b/c she's obnoxious without the exercise so she motivates me & I am able to kill 2 birds with one stone if that makes sense. And now that i'm FINALLY starting to see a pound drop off (hopefully more will follow) that motivates me too.

I have been one of the ones who has gained weight since going gluten-free. This has been hard for me b/c prior to being diagnosed w/ Celiac I always struggled w/ my weight. I'd go through periods of being thin, then I'd become heavy again.

The year before I learned why I was sick all the time (Celiac), I had been on Weight Watchers and got my weight down & maintained for a long time. I was doing great and thought I was so healthy. But, looking back, (now that I know about Celiac) I realize the constant diarreah probably contributed to my being able to maintain my weight & that I wasn't as healthy as I thought I was.

Anyhow, i've been gluten-free now (to the best of my knowledge anyway) since May 2005 and I am now (a year after going gluten-free BTW) starting to have weight creep up. I understand it's my body absorbing vitamins and nutrients correctly & i'm thrilled don't get me wrong, but i'm a short Turtle, so for weight to start creeping up it is very uncomfortable and is noticeable in my clothes, etc. & it makes me feel like crap too. I am just trying to do whatever I can to keep it from creeping up any further and hopefully start losing those pounds that have creeped up already.

Thanks for all the info and words of encouragement!!!

  4. Okay this might sound nutty but here's the deal, I was intially riding my bike every other day anywhere from 10-15 miles and I walked (sometimes) on the days I didn't bike ride.

Well, lately it's been so flippin' hot and b/c of my work schedule i've been getting up at 5:30am walking the dog 1-2 miles (depending on if I snoozed too long or not) and then I come home in the afternoon and walk her (the dog) again anywhere from 1-3 miles (depending on how i'm feeling, the heat, etc.).

SO....my point to all this is do you think weight loss is more likely to occur w/ walking? Or Biking??

I ask this b/c when I was doing the biking every other day 10-15 miles and sometimes walking on the other days I wasn't losing any weight...but since i've started ONLY walking when I got on the scale today I was so excited to see i'd lost a pound (hey it's not much but it's a start and believe you me it's been a STRUGGLE).

So i'm just curious if anyone has some insight about this and curious if walking burns more than biking or something....I thought biking the 10-15 miles was a pretty darn good workout but if losing weight is as simple as walking that's great too...

  5. Awesome! I love to bike!

gluten-free power bars (there's several threads on this site w/ gluten-free pwr bar/high protein/energy bars.

    Peanut Butter

    Bananas

    gluten-free Trail Mix

    individually packages fruit cups

buy some gluten-free bagels and spread PB or something on them

You could bake some muffins ahead of time

That's all I can think of so far...GOOD LUCK! Is this race in the states?

  6. CarlaB:

I agree with you.....this is ONLY a wonderful thing if the gluten-free Cookie isn't being CC'd by the regular cookies....or CC'd on the line, etc.

If anyone ever gets through to Starbucks w/ more details please share...I'll look around too & try to help out.

At least we can still get the coffee.....THANK YOU LORD!!!

  7. I'm becoming a bit confused as well...i've said from the beginning that things don't add up.

    BUT.......

    1. It's hard to always understand things simply via posts

    2. My guess is GcBec has had to leave things out for protection (never know who's reading)

    3. Anytime something like this happens it's overwhelming and can be hard to understand & then explaining it to others can become foggy.

SO....i'm gonna stop asking questions and simply am going to say good luck today and our thoughts are with you and your family...hope that good news is able to be posted from you soon.

Take care and hang in there!

  8. I am probably gonna sound dumb but ya'll should be used to that by now, HA!

    My questions are these....

I recognized some symptoms in myself that were mentioned here with regards to the magnesium. (tingling & chocolate (which I before going gluten-free I hardly ate chocolate, now I want it all the time). Is magnesium something that you buy OTC or do you have to have a script?

I'm currently taking Centrum Silver chewables and Caltrate chewables (i'm a whimp and can't swallow those horse pills).

Also, w/ the B-12 if your levels are normal, does taking B-12 anyway still help? I asked my dr about this a while back b/c I have low energy level most of the time and he told me my levels were fine & that taking B-12 wouldn't make much difference. Anyone have any insight or comments??

Thanks for all the good insight!

  9. I can certainly see how you would be nervous about drs talking with one another...BUT one word HIPPA! So technically, the dr who made the allegations should not be disclosing your/your children's medical information or situation with anyone that YOU have not signed a release for. That's my 2 cents for the afternoon!!

    Don't give up....KEEP ON PUSHIN'

  10. This is nuts....I'm a social worker w/ experience in child mental health and DSS/CPS and this is absolutely absurd & the most insane thing i've ever seen. I am so sorry this is happening to you. I'm personally FURIOUS at the no visitation, not even supervised visitation.

If it were me i'd contact congressmen/women, senators, everyone and their brother in my area and voice my situation. I'd also seriously think about the media (Nancy Grace @ CNN, Greta V. at FoxNews, Bill O'Reilly @ Fox News, local stations, newspapers, etc). I also like the idea of contacting other celiac organizations that might be of some help or if nothing else a voice on your behalf. My hope is that the support group you've located will also be helpful.

I can also see if your attorney tells you not to go this route right now...but it makes me angry to watch this unfold and you feel so powerless...there has to be something....

You made reference to NC...are you living in NC or are you living in NY? I was never clear about that. If you are living in NC please PM me. I have a lot of connections in NC. Not guaranteeing they can help but hey, never hurts to try right?

Hang in there and keep us posted....we're behind you.

  11. I just had this same issue...

I'm trying out Giovanni...it's not bad, leaves my hair very soft. I like the smooth as silk conditioner the best of all the products i've tried so far. I got their spray in/leave in conditioner which is working good. I also got the straightening gel they have out. I am not so thrilled with this. It's too thick & gummy for my taste. And it leaves my hair frizzy.

Be careful w/ the Aubrey Organics line b/c some of their products contain wheat, so just double check everything.

Good luck and PLEASE share your results when you try something out. I too have naturally curly hair. I can wear it curly or straighten it out. I'm always searching for good products.

  12. This was passed on to me from a friend. I generally do not eat out b/c of CC issues but I thought i'd post this anyway in the event some of you have any interest in it....

  13. I feel your pain...I have this same scenario often...and then they give you the guilt trip for not being able to eat anywhere..that REALLY makes me angry! Sometimes I just wanna live my life w/ my dog left ALONE! HAHA!

One more thing....I agree w/ you southgoingzax if I hear "you can just get a salad" or "can't you just get a salad" one more time as if they just saved the world, i'm gonna toss a salad right at them!
