Another frustrated and confused DH sufferer
squirmingitch replied to Alaskaguy's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
A couple more thoughts....... If you have been doing a lot of sea veggies, then that could well be your problem right there. When I was still eating processed foods, I could NOT eat anything that contained carrageenan or I would be miserable! Another thing..... you mentioned "that grey slop" the dog eats. Is that gluten-free dog food? If... -

Hold on! I am so sorry! I gave you a misimpression. I drink milk & eat cheese & use butter so don't despair. I did give up dairy for quite a few months in the beginning but then I went back on dairy. I do think you should give it up for a couple months ONLY in order to let your system calm down. I LOVE milk. I have milk every single day, twice... -

So really, it takes a lot for people to become iodine deficient in the US these days. It's kinda funny how we all freak out about getting enough iodine yet eat crap for food & never think another thought about how badly that is impacting our health. We are soooooooooo stuck on iodine. I think this comes (with us geezers) from our mothers who either went... -

Ummmm YEAH. You may very well be one of those who can not tolerate oats at all, purity protocol or not. I am. Ravenwoodglass is too if I recall correctly. Many of us with dh can't do oats. Too bad too, as I love oats! I used to put oats on to cook, grab a box of raisins & throw them in there & by the time the oats were cooked, the raisins were nice... -
Yes, I have to watch my exposure to iodine like a hawk! I seem so sensitive to it. When I go over my threshold (& that threshold is pretty low) then I know it for sure!

itchy rash under breasts
squirmingitch replied to homeschool mom's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Yes, the redness will go away. It takes time. I am thrilled to hear you're having good results with avoiding the iodine & fish!! Hooray!!! The antibodies have been deposited under the skin & it takes time for them to get out of there. BTW, don't be surprised if you have outbreaks even when being freaky careful. That's one of the most vexing things... -

Let's try that link again: https://www.practicalgastro.com/pdf/September08/HlywiakArticle.pdf This was not me: You said in an earlier post that until you went entirely gluten free in your house you didn't realize how much you needed that. My household has been gluten free since 5 months after my dx. That is when my husband was dx'd. That... -

Yes, cc means cross contaminated and here, dh does not mean dear husband but instead means dermatitis herpetiformis. Yes, new cutting boards, new wooden spoons, new teflon pans if yours are scratched, if you have stainless steel pans then washing them well is sufficient, new colander. Here are some links for dealing with those issues. https://www.verywellfit... -

You are welcome! You don't need to cut out the salt all together, just don't use iodized salt. From a quick Google, it seems Himalayan salt is thought not to have as much iodine as iodized salt but I can't find where there has been any testing to ascertain the levels of iodine. Yes, cut the salmon & cod for a while. If you're getting better... -

Hi there! Welcome to the forum. Cyclinglady has been taking excellent care of you. She jokes about it but I really DO think she's special. Y'all have everything else pretty much covered but I did want to address the iodine issue. So yeah, stop the drops unless a doctor ordered you to take them. As far as fish goes, if it's salt water fish then you can... -
Hi Laura, You are in Spain? I think I read that on some other post you made.???? First off, you said you got the celiac blood tests 10 years ago & it was neither negative nor positive. That test is not good forever. Maybe you were negative then but that does not mean you would test negative for the remainder of your life. So you should be tested again...

Skittles
squirmingitch replied to modiddly16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is also this from the gluten free candy list which was last updated Jan. 2019 Wrigley (Lifesavers, Skittles & Starburst) Although Wrigley's online gluten-free statement is pretty cagey (saying most products are gluten-free but some might not be, and failing to specify which is which), a statement provided to me by a customer service... -

Did you check the ingredients list on them? Did you check the wrapper on them to see if they are labeled gluten free? Ingredients Sugar, Corn Syrup, Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Oil; less than 2% of: Fruit Juice from Concentrate (Strawberry, Grape, Cherry, Blackberry, Raspberry) Citric Acid, Tapioca Dextrin, Modified Corn Starch, Colors (Titanium Dioxide... -
Does this look like d.h.?
squirmingitch replied to Laurel F's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The problem with Laurel getting a dh biopsy is that it requires her to do a gluten challenge just as if she were going to get a celiac serum panel. The same challenge parameters are required. -

squirmingitch replied to Laurel F's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It looks like dh but there are many skin conditions that can look like dh. I can clearly see that you are scratching it like mad which means it's itching like mad & dh is called the suicidal itch. But here's the thing....in your statement I quoted above, you say you don't have bowel issues like you did years ago. With dh, we tend NOT to have as... -
gluten-free Orange juice

Loved that video! Now I know why I have never gotten satisfaction from store bought OJ. It never tasted like OJ to me and being from FL, I am used to tasting the real thing fresh from the tree. No comparison to the bottled stuff you buy in the store. -

Folic Acid beat me up - WHY?
squirmingitch replied to squirmingitch's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hello everyone! I said I would post an update & so here it is. I am happy to report I apparently don't have the MTHFR mutation or at least that has nothing to do with the folic acid issue I thought I had. I took that 1/2 pill of the folic acid on Tuesday & was fine. Woke on Wednesday feeling fine. Feeling fine enough to at least try the methotrexate... -
Folic Acid beat me up - WHY?
squirmingitch replied to squirmingitch's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Thanks Posterboy, Iceland & AWOL, I am going to try it again but this time I'm going to take a 1/2 pill. I have to do it to find out. Who knows? What I experienced could have been some weird coincidence. I mean, not too long ago, I ate an avocado - something I have eaten regularly for the past few years - and within one hour my throat became... -

Thank you both! No, I have never been tested for the MTHFR mutation. Interesting. I will talk to my doc about doing that. Thanks! cycling lady, I know on the 1 forum I'm on one of the gals mentioned she has to take "the active form of folic acid which is Leucovorin Calcium". I think that's what you would be talking about? I feel better today... -

I will take a look at those Gee-Eff. Thank you. I googled that before & didn't come up with much of anything. I did join 1 but it's not very active or knowledgable. Your link appears to have a lot more options. -

Thanks gluten-free! Better a man try than no try at all so I certainly appreciate the gesture. Yes, I was thinking today that it could possibly be coincidental with a RA flare but boy oh boy those are some long odds for sure! It doesn't feel like the last flare though but since I'm new to RA & the signs of an oncoming flare or even how flares may...
