  1. Jamieson just got back to me. I'm pretty impressed with the reply and the care they showed.

Thank you for contacting Jamieson's Consumer Affairs Department regarding our Super Vita-Vim. This product is gluten free.

It is imperative that you seek advice on this subject from competent medical professionals before undertaking any nutritional/dietary supplement regime, particularly if you are currently taking any prescription or over-the-counter drug and before making any changes in prescribed medications. Each person is different and the way someone reacts to a particular product may be significantly different from another person.

Should you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at the above address, or by phone at 1-800-265-5088. Your continuous interest and support of Jamieson products is very much appreciated.

  2. Ive been looking for a multivitamin in Canada too. I found this.. Open Original Shared Link it has Wheat Grass and Barley Grass but I read Pure wheat grass and barley grass (just the grass, with absolutely no seeds) do not contain gluten. Im pretty new at all of this too so I dont know about all the other stuff in it.

EDIT: I emailed NOW Foods and they confirmed that these are not gluten free.

  3. My nutritionist informed me of this a few days ago. I'm sure some of you already know but heres a little info for those that dont.

Manufacturers will have until August 4th, 2012

The goal of the new labeling law is for allergens & gluten to be always declared; even if they are part of an ingredient. The specific labeling law for gluten is:

it is prohibited to label, package, sell or advertise a food in a manner likely to create an impression that it is a gluten free food if the food contains any gluten protein or modified gluten protein, including any gluten protein fraction, referred to in the definition of "gluten" in subsection.....

The end result is that all labels are to declare gluten in four ways:

    1. Rye, Wheat, Spelt, Kamut etc - the common name of the gluten ingredient must be labeled in the ingredient list

    2. Rye (wheat), Spelt (wheat), Kamut (wheat) - using Rye as an example, the label must inform the consumer that rye is a derivative of wheat.

    3. Wheat starch, Modified wheat starch, Hydrolized wheat protein etc - "the common name of starch, modified starch and hydrolized plant protein will have to include the name of the plant it was made from."{Source: Canadian Celiac Association, Celiac News: Volume 25, Issue 1, Spring 2011}

    4. seasoning, flavourings and spices can no longer contain hidden gluten - the label will state "seasoning (wheat)" or "Contains Wheat"

According to the Celiac Association, exemptions from this labeling include:

    Alcohol

    Individually sold candy

    Vinegar

Items packaged from bulk on retail premises

Individual food portions {e.g., packets of ketchup, crackers, etc} or food sold in vending machines

Anything made by a retailer on premises (e.g., bbq meat, roast chicken, etc)

  4. I buy it from our Super Store (not giving away the town I live in) but I would be shocked if you do not have it in Edmonton. Have you tried Ed's Gluten Free store? They have a lot of great stuff. It is also in our Nutter's (20% off everything in the store the first Tuesday of the month so I stocked up on about 12 flours yesterday). Do you have Nutter's in Edmonton? Have you tried Planet Organic? Maybe Sobeys? The downtown Sobeys carries some interesting produce but am unsure of gluten-free breads there.

Cool, it should be in Superstore by my place. I never looked around yet. Just wanted to get an idea of where you got it.

Would I be far off if I guessed you are in Spruce Grove? I grew up there is why I ask lol

  5. I've seen it here in Canada. Cannot recall which brands - perhaps Beatrice? Not sure. I know without question one company I contacted told me their chocolate milk contained gluten (malt). I just emailed Beatrice again to check. I was off lactose for months so have not checked until today.

In Canada Lea and Perrins Worcestershire contains gluten whereas the L&P in the US does not. Weird, but true.

Did Beatrice get back to you yet? I would also like to know.

  6. As an aside, you and I are sort of neighbours. I live a few hours from Edmonton and come in regularly to do my specialty food shopping at the Italian Centre, T&T, etc. Edmonton has soooooo many gluten-free restaurant choices, too! I've eaten out at several places safely such as Corso32, The Red Ox Inn, Madison's Grill, Wildflower (they even serve gluten-free bread with their bread service!)...

haha yeah I just went out to get chocolate milk too. I emailed them and they got back to me right away with a list. Thats cool that your pretty close. I havent been out to eat at restaurants yet. I am so new to all of this so I wasnt sure what was good. I will look into some of the places you mentioned.

  7. The only reason I was tested for Celiac is that a sister of mine is gluten intolerant so I requested the bloodwork. I was SHOCKED to find I indeed had the disease and requested the biopsy, too, as I could not (or would not) believe it. I had no symptoms which makes it very tough to tell whether I have been glutened or not. Don't get me wrong - I have a lot of compassion for those who get ill for days on end and would never, ever wish I would get ill. I have had bloodwork done twice to ensure I am on the right path and I am. My numbers are now negative. However, after diagnosis and from learning a lot from this board, I found that I DID have symptoms after all including miscarriages, rough and cracking fingernails, poor tooth enamel...now my teeth and nails are very healthy.

I did not want to hear the truth that I had the disease as I love food soooooooooo much. However, I still create nearly everything I used to, just differently! :)

Besides myself, your the first I heard of someone having no symptoms while on gluten. My doctor said I have no symptoms because I built up such a high tolerance to it. I wonder if thats the same for you.
