Just a note about the family question. My 3 children have been diagnosed with celiac disease so my husband and I both got gene tested to find out what side of the family it comes from (I have been told it's very unusual for 3 of my children to have celiac disease and the only one who doesnt yet is an ID twin so she has the gene) I just got the results back and my husband and I both have the same celiac disease gene so it could come from both sides of the family. It would be wise to get everyone in the family tested. Good Luck with it all

It's very hard to watch your family keep getting sick. We have 3 coeliacs in my house (3 of my 4 children) and when my oldest was diagnosed 13 years ago it took about 18 months where he would constantly get sick. I believe it was family members who we lived with contaminating everything (Not saying this is what's happening to you)We moved out and he finally settled and only got sick again when he started "sneaking" food.
Another added note is it might be an idea to go lactose free (or dairy free) for a while. A lot of coeliacs become lactose intollerant because of all the damage that has been done. So give the damage time to heal and try them on lactose again.
I wish you all the best and I hope he improves from now on

Yeah if you have 1 Auto Immune they say you are likely to have 2 or 3 of them. My son has Dermatitis as well and my daughter has alopecia on top of the coeliac.

How old is he? Tests under the age of 4 can be unreliable. If they keep coming back negative and you see improvements on a gluten-free diet I would take him off gluten as he may have a Gluten intollerance but not be a coeliac. After you have done all the testing you have done all you can do with it, so I would take it into your own hands and see how he goes

Hi hun,
YES it does get easier. My oldest was diagnosed at 14 months (Tests for children under 4 can be unreliable)he had a positive blood test and positive biopsy so all my children have been easy to diagnose. He is 14 now and YES it can be hard on them with their social life but you just need to teach them the strong importance of sticking to the diet, even if they think they wont feel sick, their body will still react in a bad way. My 11 yr old was diagnosed at 7 and he has never complained yet over it. And out of my Identical twins girls 1 so far has it and was diagnosed at 18 months. We have had a few tears but she can explain to everyone that it has to be gluten-free food (Although she did try to convince me this morning she could smell the lollies were gluten free, when they werent haha)
Anyway the whole gluten-free food becomes the "norm". Children deal with this stuff heaps better then any adult I have seen diagnosed. You will learn how to subsitute foods so they dont miss out and dont have to be different. As to sleep overs, my children dont have many at friends houses as most are too worried in feeding them but you can always come up with plans of dropping off after dinner and bring their own breaky and snacks. Their friends will be very accepting and curious of it. Close family normally try to make some sort of effort but I have found you cant rely on people so I just bring food where ever I go unless I know they will have food there for them that I trust.
I have been dealing with the whole gluten-free diet for 13 years and I dont think twice now (Although feeding teenagers gluten-free food is sending us broke haha) Good luck with it all and trust me it will all settle soon (Sorry if I rambled on a bit)

Hi again,
so far 3 of my 4 children have coeliac. The only one who doesnt have it is my daughter who is an Identical twin, so she obviously has the gene. I know she has 80% chance of getting it so I'm not worried about it happening. I am just more curious as to if any of you have ID twins with coeliac or have 1 with coeliac and one without.
Thank :-D

Hi everyone, I have 4 children, Dylan is 14, was diagnosed when he was 14 months after being very sick, Reagan is 11, diagnosed at 7 without any symptoms and Identical twins who are now 3 one of which was diagnosed at 18 months after being very sick.
There is no family history of it in either side of family so my husband and I have had the Gene test done. My Dr told me I have the recessive Gene, my partners results have just come back and the dr wants to discuss them which means he has one of the gene's as well.
So my question is - Is there really recessive and dominant genes? I was told it is very unlikely for me to get Coeliac, and if my husband has what she calls the recessive gene can that pass on so strongly to all our children the way it has?
Thanks everyone :-D

Hi, My son was diagnosed when he was 14 months old and he was the only one who it effected their growth (3 of my children have coeliac) It took about 6 months for him to start improving and catching up on his height. He is 14 years old now and his height is fine (although he believes he is short lol)Once everything has healed you should see improvment rather quickly
hey all moms and dads of children with celiac disease and this symptom: short stature.
i have a question for you: since we start the gluten free diet, how long does it take to start to grow at a normal velocity?
my son is 6yo, he is on the 2.5 percentil of the curve (normal range for him is 50%).
i ask this because this will be the most important parameter for us (me as mom and his doctor), and id like to know your experience.
thanks,
mara

My own personal experience is that as much as food can effect how the body reacts and behaves sometimes you just need a professional to help you get some answers. My second who was diagnosed with coeliac at 7 has suffered from eating issues, behavioural issues, learning issues and none have been any different since him being gluten-free (he is now 11). We are going to see a peadiatrition next year (4 month wait here to see one privatly grrrr) in hope to have some answers.
I hope you find some answers because it can be really difficult in dealing with it and your right a lot of people dont understand and that makes it even more frustrating
