  1. That's scary! I'm glad you're okay though and hope that you're back to feeling yourself soon. I'm not terribly far from that first mammogram and frankly not particularly excited. I have nothing but sympathy for that whole thing too as I've heard it can (as it was for you) sometimes be dreadfully awful. I ended up having Spam and toast and eggs. I still...
  2. Now I want Spam for supper! And I had to. My oldest daughter went through many food phases. She decided one morning she was a vegetarian, except chickens. Chickens don't have feelings. It was the only way to get one more "meat" into her.
  3. Yes, I suppose it is a fair question. It never occurred to me as a child that things weren't somehow natural. We killed our own animals, until I was 3 we had a milk cow and we grew our own vegetables. I didn't know food could come from, wherever it is marshmallows come from. I suppose I'm an odd duck though, as a parent I convinced my preschool aged children...
  4. Well that's easy. I grew up on a farm making jam. I know exactly how that got in the jars. I put it there! I didn't know when I was little that gravy could come in a jar. To this day I believe that it is a crime against humanity considering how easy it is to make yourself. If you weren't so darn far away I would come help. That sounds good...
  5. Fine.... fluff if you want to call it that. The jar does. But for some reason, when I was a small girl, I imagined a giant marshmallow sitting in a factory sneezing into jars. I like to just get a spoon sometimes and get a heap of it when I'm in the kitchen alone.
  6. If we send him out to shovel snow and the rest of the husbands too, they won't notice us spending all of our time drooling on the cabana boys. It is a brilliant plan! Far too lazy for cooking tonight, I had a little extra pasta from last night that I heated up and threw together with some Classico and the rest of my fresh cheese from lunch. Finished...
  7. Oh, if you're in charge of ordering you can be sure to count me for one of those big buff ones. I'll even take pale and blond if you have them there. Heck, I may even be inspired to find the energy to shovel sidewalks if I can watch them go by all day. I'm on my way!!! I suddenly don't care what is for supper.
  8. I'm pretty sure that where there is THAT MUCH snow to be shoveled all of the time, there is no need for cabana boys. But if we're getting one for no reason, we may as well get enough to go around. I have no clue what is for supper. I actually cooked for lunch so maybe I'll just have leftover arepas and a salad. Or something. I'm sure it'll all figure...
  9. I had some spaghetti sauce laying around my fridge and my husband found poison nuggets at the store so he had his chicken and I had pasta and a salad... with CROUTONS! My first in a year, they were so heavenly. I think I had more croutons than salad in my bowl.
  10. OMG... you said a swear!!! I postponed my tacos until tomorrow. I wasn't thinking and had a cup of OJ with my orange chicken last night forgetting that I am supposed to be limited my citrus. Oops, half blind. I'll be right as rain by morning but not up to fumbling around the kitchen tonight. I let my husband grill steak.
  11. You should have champagne cake. Just one more way to enjoy the good stuff. Last night I made rice sort of successfully. It wasn't burnt or undercooked, or both at the same time! It is mildly overcooked but that is at least progress. So, orange chicken tonight to use it all up because by God we'll eat what I didn't ruin. If I feel super ambitious while...
  12. I didn't feel particularly great yesterday, I've been getting that run down feeling and last night it finally bit me. I think I just have some random bug or another. Thankfully I did the whole turkey thing on Saturday and got it all stored up early so I was set for this I guess. Mashing up some squash tonight and a very little turkey on the side with some...
  13. I grew up in Northeastern PA. I've heard the chicken and waffles is more of a southern thing maybe but we were close enough to the Mason-Dixon line to adopt a few of their traditions without giving up being yanks. Mostly though I grew up with the Pennsylvania Dutch cooking traditions which involves baking baking and more baking of poison.
  14. How do people live without chicken and waffles?! (or turkey and waffles as a after turkey substitute) I can't be the only person who grew up eating this at least once a month and usually more often.
  15. I decided at the store last night to try KA waffle mix instead of buying more Bisquick. I was thrilled with how good my waffles turned out. My husband will not put gravy on waffles, I suppose it is because he grew up in CA and not back east where chicken and waffles is a "thing." What a sad and empty childhood he must have had, poor thing. My turkey and...
  16. I candy bacon with brown sugar. Just coat thickly with brown sugar and bake on a cooling rack set on a baking sheet. I've actually never had it last long enough to put away.
  17. To go with my husband's insane work schedule last week and this week, a busted car! Okay, maybe not busted but acting funny so I had to drive him to work today because he hates driving my Jeep. (Fine by me, I hate feeling trapped at home.) So anyway, instead of breaking out the waffle iron for turkey and waffles I think I'm just going to be 100% lazy tonight...
  18. I may have said leftovers just to be annoying. I also am obsessed with milkshakes, year round. I just can't help myself. Sadly, I do not partake. But the rules don't forbid me from cooking with it! You drink my share, I'll stick with pictures of cake I can post on my facebook to make everyone jealous. My family I'm sure is missing me and my...
  19. Tonight, leftovers. That is the best reason to cook a turkey right? We never made it to the pumpkin pie shakes last night. My husband's cat went missing and we both went out in the rain for a bit looking for him but neither of us felt up to shakes. The jerk came home today acting all like nothing ever happened. Cats. So shakes tonight with our leftovers...
  20. Maybe the lady was confused and it wasn't a Living Without magazine she was carrying around in her purse at all. The picture though was clearly a cheesecake, that was red. I usually have tiramisu for my birthday but making a cheesecake seems far more simple. And I would have the added bonus of having made cream cheese so I could have bagels for breakfast...
  21. Those muu muus are a far easier solution. I also have a man I can throw at the shoveling problem. BRING ON THE MUU MUUS!!!
  22. I'll go cry now... I have no idea. A lady let me flip through it but I was was so distracted and frustrated by other things I didn't write it down. I just remember thinking that it isn't a big deal to contact the magazine and ask for a copy. This almost calls for breaking out the headbanging pony. ETA: The one I have is not one of the ones I see listed...
  23. As far as I know, it was the most recent issue before the holiday one. It was near the back. I was flipping looking at someone's copy somewhere and swore I'd get my hands on that recipe. Now... to learn to make cream cheese. And good luck collecting. I traded my soul for a cookie in second grade, seriously. You'll have to track down whoever has it by now...
  24. Good stuff! I baked up a batch of Bob's cornbread while I got the turkey ready and just crumbled up about half of it to use. My husband wouldn't touch it, I wasn't surprised and frankly that is fine by me. I'll probably freeze the rest of the cornbread for Christmas so I don't have to make more. I wanted to do that maple whatever turkey with the rub...
  25. Turkey day today! I'll make cornbread pudding (from the new Living Without holiday issue), mashed taters, gravy, and pumpkin pie shakes. I'm far too lazy to make a real pie on top of actual cooking.
