  1. I hope it goes well for you from now on. I would be interested to hear. PM me if you prefer. My rheumatologist was quite curious about this effect of going gluten free (he wasn't celiac-savvy), and he asked me to let him know how things progressed for me even though I am no longer actively under his care, as he wished to learn more. It would be really helpful if I could say that I am not the only one...

A little update: The period seems very standard so far, as if I were still taking treatment. I'll post again next month to confirm this is permanent and not just a one time thing (I hope!). I also hope things go well for you too XOXO

  2. Yes, I know what you mean. I am still reacting at a lower level, so I keep thinking it may not happen next month. But it does...

For me, it is very light and short (well, at least compared to what I was used to earlier in life...). At this stage I don't know if it is because I am simply peri-menopausal, which is quite likely at my age of 47, or because I have not yet completely recovered. Time will tell.

Sure Gail I'll let you know :-) XOXO

  3. Hey Dani - That is really great news. I am really happy for you. I think you said you had been without your periods for a very long time?

May I ask how long it is since you went gluten free?

Thank you! Yes I've been on birth-control treatment to get periods for 20 years, but I stopped taking the pills a month ago and went completely gluten-free. I got accidentally glutened about two weeks ago though, so I thought I wasn't going to get a period this month, but I did :-)

  4. Hi Dani, i dont know if it helps but one of my huge symptoms is anxiety over things, and they are things that definitely should not cause my anxiety i've been given different medication to help, nothing seems to help unless im on a tranquilizer but thats just not a life for me lol.. I noticed after being off gluten even for just a week my anxiety level was going down, not sure if its a lasting condition but I hope not.

It turns out the anxiety I'm getting is caused by my period :-) :-D

  5. Hi everyone,

I'm back in Sweden now. I'm being quite careful reading labels but still not feeling well at all.

I never get aches or classical symptoms. Just constipation, amenorrhea, and anxiety (or panic), but those can also be signs of old fashioned stress or anxiety without being glutened. I'm at a loss.

Any of you long-term experienced folk with silent-celiac have a way of knowing the difference between being glutened or if it's just anxiety?

Also, here in Sweden the law for labeling is as follows:

"The revisions in gluten regulation means that a single value is introduced for the term "gluten free" - no more than 20 milligrams of gluten / kg as sold to be. Products that are suitable for gluten intolerant and that contains more than 100 milligrams of gluten / kg may bear the term 'very low gluten'."

    Is that safe?

  6. I so feel for you and I'm so sorry you're feeling so poorly both physically and mentally. We always feel worse about everything when we're sick and tired. If I lived near you I'd make you a huge pot of my mother's rice porridge recipe. Any friends who can come over and help you with some cleaning / cooking a little while you recover?

Just a thought, you could try investing in an ice-cream maker perhaps? use lactose-free milk or yogurt to make it.. and if you're allergic to soy you can use almond milk.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  7. Do you think that maybe you accumulate some faint amounts of gluten each day of the week (when your husband gets home every day) until you finally feel bad on Saturday (which is when your husband stays at home) and then start feeling better on Monday, but then the slow accumulation starts over? I dunno just a thought!

  8. Thanks for the advice everyone. Drinking as much as I can and eating plenty of fibers.

This incident should be a lesson: Check everything!

It's a little easier in Sweden because I'm familiar with all the gluten-free brands there and they're always in their own section.

One thing worries me though since a lot of people looked at me as if I were a madwoman whenever I asked if their products contained gluten (one of them worked at patchi chocolate store!):

When traveling abroad and going to a restaurant, even if I explain to them what gluten-free is, how would they know that caramel color (for example) could contain gluten, and how would I know they aren't using the same cookery as others to avoid CC?

  9. I bought a flour mix that was supposedly gluten-free. I'm currently on a trip, and in this country, organic products are placed on the same shelf as the gluten-free ones. Meaning they have no clue what gluten-free products are for. I should have been more careful.

We made Korean dumplings with the flour and I loved them so much because they were so soft and perfect. When I went to check on the brand name to see if I can find it in Sweden as well I discovered it was an organic wheat mix :-(

I've been having a terrible bloat and some constipation, irritability and anxiety for two days and now I know why. I thought I ate something contaminated but turns out my beautiful dumplings were the culprit. I ate so much of them. I don't even know how long the anxiety will last :-(

Can't wait to get back to Sweden where gluten-free shelf is strictly gluten-free.

I know what to do to help with the digestive side-effects, but is there anything I can do to stop the anxiety and panic-attacks?

  10. Thanks for the insight everyone. I tried reading about NCGI but couldn't find anything definitive so thought I'd ask here. Was the right thing to do :-)

Makes me wonder which category my family falls under. My dad has diabetes, thyroid problems, joint inflammation, chronic constipation, and rashes, but he's tall, overweight and has thick bones.

I'm not officially diagnosed myself but I'm positive all my issues are caused by gluten through trial and error. No doctor has taken me seriously so I'm not sure I can get an official diagnosis, specially since it would be too hard for me to go back to eating gluten.

  11. Yes, there is a difference. There's also wheat allergies.

Pretty much, non-celiac gluten intolerance doesn't cause the same damage to the small intestines that celiac disease does.

There hasn't been enough research on NCGI, although there has been a push for more research to be done on it.

Regardless, a gluten-free diet is the current answer (or a wheat-free in the case of wheat allergies.)

So people with NCGI are able to absorb nutrients but just can't tolerate gluten?

  12. Wasn't sure where to post this so sorry if it's the wrong board.

I've been trying to read more about Gluten Intolerance, and whether there's a difference between it and Celiac but couldn't find a good answer. Anyone know of a good web site explaining that or could try explaining here?

I also just found out I have G6PD, but not sure how much it's effecting me yet (might just be a carrier). Anyone else here who has G6PD symptoms and celiac? How do you cope without beans and soya?

  13. Yes. I had panic attacks, mood swings and anxiety all my life and figured it out a few years ago. They would come and go randomly when I wasn't doing a completely gluten-free diet (because I wasn't aware of hidden gluten in processed and commercial food). They went away when I stopped gluten completely a few weeks ago. But it needs to be a completely full proof gluten-free diet from all the unsafe foods and hidden ingredients or accidental cross contamination and not just not eating wheat products. https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/forbidden-gluten-food-list-unsafe-ingredients-r182/
