I put up a post yesterday about a new cookbook and it seems to have vanished. I don't know if it ws deleted or if my machine ate it on the way to the board, as I didn't get a message saying it was deleted or moved, so I'm guessing my machine ate it. I'm not trying to push the book, but just to let people know a new one was out.
Here are the details of it:
The Best-Ever Wheat-and-Gluten-Free Baking Book by Mary Ann Wennigar with Mace Wenniger.

Does anyone know if Bard's Beer is still around? I would love nothing more than to get ome gluten-free beer, but the closest place (according to their website) is in Vermont. That's 4 hours away at least. I haven't seen anything new on their website for months and the Internet wine and beer place show it continually out of stock. I certainly hope they are still around and doing well.

My friend just gave me a new gluten-free baking cookbook. There's a lot of yummy recipes in it, but the problem for me is that they are too heavily rice flour based. Once I work out a good substitute mixture, I'll be all over them!! But if anyone is interested, let me know and I'll post some info.

Hi to all that I have chatted with:
Lots of you guys are old hats at this gluten-free stuff and many are new, as I am.
What do you do when you get overloaded.
I actually have been dreaming of modified food starch/modified corn starch, natural ingred, spieces added....etc.
What do you do to chill-down a little and take this infliction step-by- step?
I guess, a little down tonight. The Dr. took six vials of blood to be tested for vitamin deficiencies......as my daughter would say "probley so with the brain fog mess".
I guess, a good night sleep and start over again and again and again...........
Emotions are hitting me now. Anyone there experienced the same ups and downs?
I would love to hear.... (think my chems are off .. so, there be I.)
Thanks for listening.......Lisa B.

I so understand where you are coming from!! I just worked it out this past May, and I've spent lots of time frustrated and in mourning over what I can no longer have.
What I've done is made my kitchen totally gluten-free and I cook all the time. At least for the week, I know that I don't have to worry about dinner nor lunches (usually leftovers from the previous night's dinner). Going to the grocery is another matter.
Also, I treat myself. There are some excellent gluten-free chocolate chip cookie recipes (if you can have chocolate chips nd rice flour), brownies (Bob'e Red Mill gluten-free Brownie mix is a lifesaver some days, especially for me - a chocaholic) or gluten-free chocolate bars (my personal preference is Green and Black's - no dairy in the dark chocolate nor the Maya Gold oranage chocolate). Doing this at least gives me a certain amount of normalacy.
Hope this helps a little.

I'm on Cape Cod and I'm a former perl programmer (former geek) I'm now a stock broker!

Wow!! How cool is that?! I wouldn't mind being a geek on the Cape. How do you find tourist season?
How did you go from programming to stock broker?

Hey Beth, I'm on the North Shore too, in Manchester...where are you??
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I'm technically in Lynn, but I'm 3 blocks from the beach and Swampscott. I love it here.

Hi Beth,
We have a lot in common! I live in MA as well. But west of Boston. I Work in Newton as a Sales Engineer in high tech (Geek ). I am 37 (almost 38) and married with 2 stepsons.
I had positive ELISA IGA and IGG tests about 4 weeks ago.
I don't know anyonw with Gluten Intolerance or Celiac's and my diagnosis is new. I would love to chat sometime.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I know Newton a bit. My ex worked at Brandeis, so we drove by newton all the time.
I would love to chat sometime. I was only diagnosed this past May so I can only imagine how you feel. I know for myself I'm still a bit narked off. But yeah, I'd love to chat and/or share recipes.

Hi! I'm on the East Coast, but I'm up by Boston MA (North Shore). I'm 34 years old, a computer virus analyst (geek! ) and the only other interesting tidbit is that I'm getting married in October.
I don't know many celiacs around here, though I work with one, but I don't get to talk with him much as he travels extensively. I hope you don't mind me posting in here.

You poor dear! I feel so bad for you. I can just imagine how bad it was (I get the stomach pains as well, along with the nausea) I got "glutened" yesterday by cleaning up Wheetabix crumbs from the counter, and that was only a tiny bit.
I learned the hard way about Corn Flakes. You'd think Kellogg's Corn Flakes would be safe wouldn't you? Nope. Turns out they use barley in there.
I hope you feel better soon. <3

It's hard *not* to be food obsessed when first diagnosed. I know I am to a certain degree (diagnosed a few weeks ago). I know that feeling of your world crashing around you, the whole how #$%@@#$ unfair it is, and the what do I do now and how do I eat. You are not alone.
I cope by making a meal plan for the week, and just making that. It's simple foods really, stuff that I found in my old WW and low carb cookbooks, and some stuff found online. I'm trying not to obsess so much with food, but try to enjoy what I make. I basically eat meats and veggies, but am trying to get some semblence of fruit back in my diet (even though I hate the stuff) just for the variety.
If you ever want to talk, PM me or any of the greeat people on here. They all understand. Also, check around here, because there are lots of gluten-free recipes posted on here. Down in the recipe section tarnelberry posted some amazing ones!! *hugs* (if you want them)

I've had those under the rib pains for years I also thought it was heart related. FWIW, mine turns out to be a muscle that's under the breast right under your arm. I have to get that one worked by a massage therapist every once in a while or I'm in agony for weeks. It also flares up the muscles in my back under the shoulder. But I've also had those stabbing-hot-poker-in-between-the-ribs that just murder. I can't breathe, move or do anything when those hit.

I feel so bad for you guys. Your own families forgetting about you or being so careless like that. That really sucks!! You are all welcome into my family (that's basically me, Paul, our puggies, bunnies and his mum and dad). We'll treat you all with respect! Ok, the puggies may not, they will hop on your lap and lick you to death.

Actually, I've found that telling people I'm on the Atkins diet (mostly in restaurants) makes it much easier for them to understand and avoid breads and such. I don't always have the time/energy to launch into the whole "I have celiac disease and have to be strictly gluten-free" and get the deer-in-headlights look. Frankly, saying you are on Atkins is so easy for the general public to wrap their brains around that they will generally let it go. (At least that's been my experience) I know it's bad of me, but sometimes the easy way out is the best and the shortest so I can get back to life.

Thanks guys!!
Having folks like you around is really making this more bearable. No one I know has this (or has even heard of it) so it's comforting to have folks round that really understand. My fiance Paul has been wonderful, even offering to go gluten-free with me, but he's been the only support I have besides this group.
Thanks again for putting a smile of my face.

These are just some initial thoughts I had. Are you eating a lot of rice or soy? I know in my case soy will give me the brain fog, bloating and runny stools. Rice is as bad as gluten for me, but it might be something that's affecting you. Even corn could be culprit.
You also mentioned you are sugar free. It's possible to get these reactions from certain sweeteners. Any of the sugar alcohols (malitol, sorbital, glycerine) can cause stomach upset, pain and diarrhea. In fact, many people can't tolerate them. I'm lucky I can, but Splenda makes me really ill and causes me pain.
For me, it's been trial and error. I eat a meal that's all gluten-free with simple ingredients (steak with a herb rub for example), a veggie, and then a suspect ingredient. See how you feel. If you feelicky, chances are high the suspect is something your body can't cope with.
Best of luck to you.

Hi all.
I'm really having a hard time coping with being gluten-free. It's not so much the the actual diet as it is my lack of alternatives. It seems like most people can substitute rice flour or soy flour and have breads or pasta. Same with milk: replace with soy, rice or even almond/hazzelnut. What do you do when you're allergic to all those things. Im allergic to soy (get really bloated and feel harrible), rice reacts as bad as gluten in my body and nuts cause aphylactic (sp?) shock. I know I should think of it as a new way to eat, and just cut out the stuff, but I'm so used to breads/pastas/baked goods etc, that I don't know if I can.
Any advice?

It sounds great!! Wish I could have it. I have a nut allergy, so no pecans for me.

I just came back from a great shop at Open Original Shared Link. The place is fantastic. A good selection, but also really awesome service. She lets you sample anything in the store and will actually come and chat with you. She seems to be low-carb oriented in diet, but also gluten-free as her daughter has celiac disease. The other owner also has celiac disease.
They do mail-order if you aren't local, so definitely check them out. The coolest thing she told me (I don't know if this works for all states but it does here) is that I need to save all my receipts as it's good for a tax deduction. Because the food is specialised and more expensive than if you bought at a regular shop, you can actually get tax breaks. How cool is that?
-
I'll definitely give that a try and see how it goes. Thanks Abby!!

Thanks for replying. The reaction was similar to gluten (nausea, dry heaves, then pain) but more pronounced. Gluten usually just goes to blinding pain within a half an hour. Rice in and of itself could be a problem. I was told to avoid rice and soy by my nutritionist, but corn should be ok every once in a while. Except for sushi, I was never a big rice eater. Never really liked the stuff.
I never thought about gluten being in the pans. I use a dishwasher and figured that would blast about anything off. I'll check into that.
Bean flour? I've never heard of it. What kind of beans is it made out of? Is it any good?
Sorry to be asking so many questions.
Beth

Hi all.
Since trying to go gluten-free to stop the pain I'm in, I've been missing some of the stuff, like pasta. I found some gluten-free/wheat free pasta (made of rice flour). I got sooooooooo ill from it last night it was unbelievable. I thought maybe it was the pasta sauce (vodka sauce lots of dairy), so I tried rice bread this morning. Same results. Very ill. In pain within a half an hour.
Is it possible to be "allergic" - sensitive I guess is the better word, to other grains? I know I don't get on with soy, and rice and corn were somewhat questionable, but I've never reacted that badly before. I've never really ate a lot of gluten-free stuff, so to be fair, this was really my first major intake of anything other than white flour/wheat flour.
I feel really defeated right now as I just don't know what I'm doing.
Thanks for listening.

AH!! I didn't know that. It was Kellogg's. I'll definitely try organic corn flakes then. Any particular brand you recommend?

Hi Kelly! I'm new here too, and know just what you mean about the brain fog/spaciness. I was having that too for a ong time. I tried cutting out sugar and refined flour, as that was what seemed to be the culprit (I would actually get close to fainting eating some of that stuff) but it only did part of the job. Cutting out wheat/gluten has helped quite a bit for me, and I'm considering trying dairy and eggs just to see f that doesn't take it the rest of the way. This place has really been a major helpfor me and I hope it will be for you too.

You defiinitely have a point. It really isn't worth the pain, just to get a test result. I know the DH will agree with that.
It realy does seem to be gluten. With low carb I was still eating wheat bread. As soon as I stopped, the pain eased. I actually had 2 pain-free days (the first in 2 months). Then I hit something with gluten as I felt bad again, but it really seemed to drive home the point.
Now I guess it's a case of how do I find the hidden gluten stuffs? I'm sure this has been covered on here, so you can just point me in the right direction. I mean, I know anything with grains, but what is some of the weird stuff that you wouldn't expect?
Carriefaith, how did you find out about dairy? I noticed you were dairy-free too.

I hope they are still around!! I've sent a ouple of emails, but haven't had a reply. I'm just suprised that they aren't more vocal. Here's hoping they are still there!!
