Independent Livings and Assisted Livings
Nikki2777 replied to Nikki2777's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi Mari - Thank you. That's a bit what I'm afraid of. My husband I talk about moving to an Independent Living at some point when we tire of cooking and shopping for ourselves and want more/easy social interaction and less home maintenance. I already get bored with cooking for myself sometimes. And no, I don't really have family in this city to help... -
I think it's a terrific idea - I don't know how many people with Celiac avoid restaurants altogether, but I certainly don't. I'm lucky enough to live in a major metropolitan area with a number of dedicated Gluten Free restaurants and cafes or those that 'know how to do gluten-free right'. In those, I still tell them I have Celiac and mention the risk...

Yes, I'm 'asking for a friend'; no, really. But it's also made me curious about the options for myself when the time comes. I've been managing my mother's care in an Assisted Living. Luckily, she can eat nearly anything. My friend, however, is struggling to find a place in our city (NYC) that can accommodate her mother, who has Celiac Disease. It's got...

Nestle Vitality Juices/Water?
Nikki2777 replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you. I was able to find this label after some digging, so with natural flavors being ok, I’m drinking this! -
Hi. Does anyone know if the Nestle Vitality Juices (or water?) sold in fountains in commercial buildings are gluten free? I’m now spending 3-7 hours a day in a place that has one. I’ve searched online and can’t find anything. I’d like to drink these, but I usually am careful about ‘natural flavors’. Thanks.

Thank you both - definitely looking forward to this trip!

We'll be traveling to Scotland soon, and I thought I'd see if anyone has any insights into restaurants, general Celiac knowlege/gluten-free friendliness? I did find some great lists for Edinburgh, but would also be interested in Inverness, Aviemore, Fort William, roadside stops, etc. We'll be doing a lot of hiking, so packable foods available at grocery...

This is a terrific list, Scott. Thank you!

We will be traveling to both Nashville and Boston in the near future, by car, and I thought I'd see if anyone has any recommendations. I have (and love!) Find me Gluten Free, but wanted to see if there are any gems to recommend. In Boston, we'll be staying in Copley Square. In Nashville, we'll be near Vanderbilt University. In Nashville, someone...

Does anyone know if this Hot Cocoa mix is definitely Gluten Free? It contains Maltodextrin, and nowhere on the label does it say it's Gluten Free. On their website, though, they do make the claim. Relatedly, do you all assume Maltodextrin is unsafe (from barley) unless otherwise stated?

Start up Gluten free business cafe
Nikki2777 replied to Tamuna Heuvelman's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Based on what I've seen succeed, I think the key is NOT to primarily promote it as a gluten-free restaurant (except in specialty places like this website) - the market's just not big enough. Have good, fresh food that is all gluten free and you'll get customers who don't need to eat gluten free as well as those who seek you out because you're gluten free... -
Sorry for the delayed answer - haven't been on in a while, and I hope you've found some relief. I don't have the scientific understanding of all the markers that some on here do, but I will tell you that what you're eating is heavy on the oils and fats. I still can't eat as much cheese as I'd like to or what I could when I was younger and prior to ...

Publix Raspberry Seltzer?
Nikki2777 replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No issues at all. A whole new world of flavor 😉 -
Is that 100% gluten free? I couldn’t find something that says so explicitly, but it seems to be from their allergen chart. Also just discovered Fresh Kitchen: eatfreshkitchen.com with multiple locations in Florida. Also a ‘bowl’ place. It was absolutely delicious! Florida seems to have gotten this right!

Freshly is very tasty if a bit heavy on sauces (maybe why they’re so tasty!) I really liked it but had to stop because I was trying to lose weight. That was 1+ years ago and I gave that feedback so it’s possible they’ve introduced leaner options since then. I’ve also used Epicured and liked it, but it was pricey. Back in the ‘before t...

Publix Raspberry Seltzer?
Nikki2777 replied to Nikki2777's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Scott, that’s really interesting about natural flavors. I thought I was pretty up to date on the things to not worry about, but I missed that one. Opens up a whole new world of possibilities! -
Due to an Instacart mixup, I've got a ton of Publix Rasberry Seltzer on hand, and would like to drink it. Normally, I avoid anything with 'Natural Flavors' on the label, but I also know that this is really unlikely to have any gluten in it. Thought I'd see if anyone had any experience with this product. Hate for it to go to waste. Thanks!

Thanks, Trents - One other thought, whenever I order eggs at a restaurant, I ask if they can make them in a separate pan, not on the flat griddle (I forget the name for it). Hard to keep that clean. For some reason, hotel eggs -- even if I watch them crack the eggs into the omelette pan and check out the spray they use -- always make me sick, though...

Hi Sam - While that's definitely a tough age, you have a wonderful opportunity to model speaking up and advocating for themselves and a head on approach to handling life's curve balls. I agree that the big chain restaurants can be challenging (except PF Changs and Outback and places like that, and even they still make mistakes sometimes) - you'll find...

Does anyone know if these are gluten free? I have the option to buy them from Costco. Nothing saying gluten-free on the packaging, but nothing concerning in the ingredients. When I go to the website, it does not list anything but soy in the allergens. It's apparently a Con Agra product. Are they one of those companies considered very up front in...

I consider them the fifth food group. Eat them all the time (other flavors - not a big watermelon fan). -
Crazy Idea???
Nikki2777 replied to Days Off's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Not me. Yes, it’s a pain to find safe food when I travel, but few of us travel to such remote locations that we can’t find something at all, if even a bag of chips. I don’t think it’s enough to sustain a market. That said, if you were going to do it, I’d focus on the extreme/remote travelers and campers. I’m hoping to go to Nepal next year and yes, I ...
