  1. I am one of those celiacs that really is hopeful something like this will happen in the next 10 years. I have no problem eating gluten-free, I actully like it. I find hidden gluten and cc issues when eating out extrememly frustrating. I would be so happy to have something like this to help make my social life feel more normal. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  2. For me this is the worst part of celiac. That felling that I am different. The looking on as everyone enjoys themselves and not able to participate. The hurt feelings and no one seeming to understand. I wish I could say that I have figured it out, but I haven't. I do try and make sure I have food wherever we go but it is difficult. Sending hugs your way.

  3. I think all of us feel at times as if no one else has this disease. That is why we come here, there is comfort in numbers :)

sweetp-You need do dump the quinoa noodles. IMHO they are just nasty. Try tinkyada (I know I mispelled that) it tastes like real pasta and does not fall apart. I can not stand the rice loaf bread. I enjoy the Whole Foods bread toasted, I like Anna's bread from gluten evolution, and I tried Pamela's in my bread maker and that was good.

Sorry Barry left the cookies on the counter :( Make sure you have goodies for yourself for times like these.

  4. I would keep it simple. It is easier for you and less chance of cross contamination for her. I love grilled meats, fresh vegies and fruit. For dessert try ice ceam :D Pick up some wheat free soy sauce (I think I use San-J, check the label they also make a wheat based soy sauce) and do a quick stir fry with rice. If you limit the processed food you will limit her chance of getting sick. Have a great visit :)

  5. I use this trick for freezing almost anything that can stick (like fruit and bread). I line a cookie sheet with wax paper and put the food in a single layer so that it is not touching. Freeze for a couple of hours (or less depending on what it is) and then bag as normal. Because the bread slices were frozen sepearately they will not stick :) I think I got this idea from Martha Stewart

  6. I am so sorry your fiance is not understanding. It is so hard to deal with the change but to not have support is another blow you did not need.

I would have an open and honest discussion about your feelings and his. Nothing gets better if communication does not take place. When dealing with my dh I always try to use "I" statements. That way he does not feel he is being attacked. I really think you need to talk. It may be the best thing to happen in your relationship!

  7. I am a Mom but I am the one with celiac! Just a few thoughts.

When the party is at your house make everything gluten-free and free of allergens for him. That way he can eat everything! I have done this for several birthday's and it has worked out great. Plus it is only one meal. If people don't like it they can leave and eat something else :P

I will usually call ahead to see what the menu is and if I can eat something. If not I bring the same thing (only gluten-free) or something similar. Most people don't even notice.

Last piece of advice is to breathe! Yes it is scary having severe allergies. Yes it is your job to be protective of your son. It is also your job to teach your children how to live in this world. You will be a great example of how your son can lead a full and rewarding life :)

  8. I read somewhere (for the life of me I can not remember where) that Irish Oats can have cc issues. I eat oatmeal with no problem but I only eat gluten-free oatmeal from gluten free oats company. They do not do a rotation crop and test their oatmeal to insure it is gluten-free (family member is a celiac). However, this is a personal decision that requires much research. The protein in oats is similar to the protein in wheat. So there are a number of celiacs who react to the protein in oats even if it is gluten-free.

Dingo Girl- remember that oats contain alot of fiber. This increase can cause bloating, "d" and gas. Which is why it is recommended to start out very slow with oats.

  9. For me this is really the hard part of this disease, the social isolation. At least that is how it feels for me. I am so sorry that this happened to you. Some people just don't understand the seriousness of cc. Maybe you could do something for yourself tomorrow that will lift your spirits.
