  1. When I am glutened, I stick to mushy foods like unseasoned soups, stews and even mushy fruit (e.g. cooked apples). Anything that is easy to digest. Non-processed because I might have developed a temporary intolerance. Boring, but effective.
  2. I do this after a glutening. While my family is eating gluten-free spaghetti and salad, I am eating stew — nice and mushy!
  3. JMG just might be on to something with the AIP diet. Researchers at Scripps in San Diego (very reputable) just conducted a small study with IBD patients (Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis). They had read about the AIP diet and wanted to test it. Patients stayed on all their medications/treatments. At the end of the study they a...
  4. I would not worry. Give the gluten free diet a chance to work. Be sure to get follow-up testing and care. http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/how-often-should-follow-up-testing-occur/ While it is very possible to have more than one autoimmune issue, see if symptoms resolve on the diet. It might be just celiac-related. The diet has a very...
  5. I think these hot dogs may not be so smart. Highly processed for starters. He could be reacting to any of the ingredients like soy, carrageenan, Xanthan Gum, garlic, yeast extract, gluten contamination, etc. Personally, you could not pay me to eat any hotdog. I vomit them up ever since I was a kid. In my case, I suspect the casing, but who knows? ...
  6. Watch the Benedryl. It crosses the blood brain barrier. Consider a second generation antihistamine instead. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3667286/ New studies show it may cause dementia which is more concerning to me because I am old! ?
  7. Sorry you were ill. Personally, there were several things that would pop up on my radar: 1. processed food from a country that has very few celiacs, if at all 2. Not certified. If you think you are super sensitive, this might be something to rely on, especially imported products where they might not follow good manufacturing processes to avoid...
  8. Nice cause, but I would give up donating blood. I did. I gave blood at school. As I was reaching for a Cookie I passed out. I was there the entire day. The Red Cross volunteers were arguing about taking me to ER. They pumped me with coffee and walked me up and down the hallway. I am sure other students thought I was drunk. Finally, they drove me...
  9. The lab ranges are a bit odd, but I think you can tell that you have two positives. It only takes one positive on the panel to move forward. I only was positive on the DGP IgA, yet I had significant gut damage. The next step would be a Gastroenterologist referral to obtain biopsies to confirm a celiac disease diagnosis. http://www.cureceliacdisease...
  10. I am sorry that you daughter has the possibility of both Crohn’s and Celiac Disease. My niece has Crohn’s. It took a long time to get her diagnosis, but she is managing well. She will continue to get screened for celiac disease, but does not have it now. Follow up testing for celiac disease: http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/how-often-sho...
  11. A challenge should be done under a doctor’s care. Preferably a Gastroenterologist (GI). Why? A gluten challenge can be shortened to two weeks if an endoscopy is ordered. A GP (primary) can not do this. I would call your doctor, explain your symptoms and ask for a GI referral ASAP. Follow-up in writing via postal letter or email. Start documenting a...
  12. This is not really a response to KarenG or Ennis, but to anyone in general as both have made excellent comments and I thought I would add my two cents (that and I am working on my iPad and I am not so tech-savvy nor have time!) Although McDonalds corporate does have excellent policies and practices in place, each restaurant is franchised. It is up...
  13. Hi! Welcome! It can take a long time to heal from celiac disease. First , learning the gluten free diet can be hard. Cross contamination can be a problem. Read our Newbie 101 thread located at the top of the “Coping” section of the forum. Second, most celiacs have a lot of collateral damage beyond the GI tract. It usually takes weeks to months to ...
  14. I am not sure if your current problem (swollen face) is due to celiac disease or not. It sounds like you are taking many medications and steroids. These may lead to a swollen face: https://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/moon-facies#1 Talk to a pharmacist about ALL your medications and the potential side effects. I hope you recover soon.
  15. Assuming the website is correct, TUMS Regular Strength are gluten free: https://www.tums.com/antacid-products/regular/ Hope you feel better soon!
  16. “Lunch, for us, switched from "something you buy at school, or a sandwich" to "last night's dinner, packed in a Thermos to stay warm". - Shop the grocery perimeters. I sometimes end up with nothing but meat/fish/chicken and produce. “ This. This sounds like me! Excellent advice.
  17. Get tested! http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/screening/ I have celiac disease, autoimmune gastritis, and Hashimoto’s, but I am a TD2. Some 10% of TD1s have celiac disease. Hives? I have them. My Doctors all think they are either thyroid-related or another autoimmune issue. I think they might even be a stand-alone autoimmune issue because I...
  18. Welcome! Consider getting back on gluten and getting tested properly for celiac disease which checks for antibodies or intestinal damage. Who ordered the bionome test? What did they say? I think those tests are still pretty new and may not be accurate. Even Celiac expert, Dr. Fasano, whose team discovered Zonulin (gatekeepers of the gut), has...
  19. I am not a doctor. I think you know exactly what the test results mean, but you are 8ndenial which is normal. I think there is a strong indication that she has celiac disease. For sure? No. A firm diagnosis requires an endoscopy to obtain intestinal biopsies. This is STILL the gold standard in diagnosing celiac disease. Now some people lack health...
  20. A GI, based on your symptoms, should do a follow celiac panel to see if your antibodies are down. A follow-up endoscopy should be considered. http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/how-often-should-follow-up-testing-occur/ I was having issues this past year (diagnosed five years ago). My celiac antibodies were sky high. I was getting so discouraged...
  21. I do not have a can handy. What does the label say? You always want to check the label on any packaged product every single time. If you want to know if I have consumed it and avoided a celiac flare-up, then the answer is a sound YES! I use it in my no-bake lemon jello cheesecake from the 1960’s when Jello was all the rage.
  22. I am sorry I was trying to be helpful (and maybe reach others who are concerned about McCormick spices). I should not assume you have celiac disease, are gluten intolerant or have any issues at all. I can advise that members review the Gluten Free Watchdog’s report on spices for themselves, because the measurable amount of gluten in spices i...
  23. @KatieDeer — are you feeling better?
  24. You could have an allergy to any of the ingredients in the product, or you might not be able to tolerate 20 ppm, (especially if you have DH) or your DH is reacting to a previous gluten exposure. Read through the DH section for Coping ideas. I do not have DH, but I have heard that it can take a long time for the antibodies to leave the skin and that the...
  25. My advice still stands. Bleeding from the GI tract is not a normal symptom of the flu. Find out what side effects can occur. Ask the pharmacist because they really get drug interactions. I can not take ANY OTC medication fever reduction as I am allergic to aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen. I just use those “Be cool” gel packs that kids lik...
