I am sorry your daughter is ill. Be sure to read the Newbie 101 thread under the “Coping” section. Things like a dedicated colander and toaster are in order. Just because she tested negative a few years ago, does not mean she does not have celiac disease. It can develop at any time. You might want to check to see if a complete panel was run...

Constipation
cyclinglady replied to selectivefocus's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Here is another clue to her constipation woes. Sounds like she does not like veggies. A very common struggle between child and parent! I think KarenG made this her life long goal! “How to get teenagers to eat more veggies” which is written in her celiac.com bio. I do not think she won the battle or the war. Turns out the the motivator was a girlfriend! H... -
Constipation
cyclinglady replied to selectivefocus's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think you need to determine the source. While it may be attributed to celiac disease, it should have resolved or improved on a strict gluten free diet by now. Many things can cause constipation (I am sure you have researched this): https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/150322.php You mentioned a milk protein intolerance? Maybe she has... -

Waiting for test results
cyclinglady replied to leighannh2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am sorry that you are still ill. Unfortunately, after being gluten free, celiac experts recommend 8 to 12 weeks of consuming gluten daily prior to the blood tests. Why? It can take that long for antibodies to get into the bloodstream. Of course, it can be much shorter for some, but experts rule on the side of caution. They want to catch as many... -
Here are the tests: http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/screening/ There are not that many blood tests (three) to order and obviously your doctor seems to be clueless. There is no excuse as Dr. Google is available to him. You should see a gastroenterologist (GI) and your best shot is going back on gluten for two weeks and hope that the GI orders...

I know that you posted in the teens section, but Karen is right. Crohn’s needs to be managed under a GI’s care. He would treat those hemmoroids, for example. You can manage Crohn’s with a combination of drugs, surgery, and diet, but it never going away. You can still live a good life and do all the things you want though. Sure you can eat a muc...

Welcome! Unfortunately, you have to be on a gluten diet in order for any of the celiac tests to work. You would have to do a challenge of consuming gluten for 8 to 12 weeks prior to a blood draw or 2 to 4 weeks prior to an endoscopy. If celiac disease is ruled out, then you might have GI (gluten sensitivity is the new terminology). You did not...

I completely get your not wanting to do a gluten challenge. My hubby went gluten free some 17 years ago based on the poor advice of my allergist and his GP. The gluten free diet worked though. Then 12 years later, I was diagnosed with celiac disease. Anemia was my only symptom — no GI symptoms. My hubby would be the first to say that I have h...

Starting Journey
cyclinglady replied to utahham's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Utah — Maybe you just need to wait for that follow-up visit. I can not believe that with a positive TTG IgG, your doctor did not bother to obtain intestinal biopsies. Your result is not common, but it should have been investigated (sometimes the TTG can be elevated by other illnesses. Some celiacs are even seronegative! Please be sure t... -
Oddly for me, my endoscopy this month revealed healed villi, but my antibodies (DGP IgA) were still elevated. So, testing for antibodies after diagnosis is not perfect, but it is the less invasive tool in the toolbox right now. But, the DGP IgA is the only test I have tested positive on. Has the entire panel been run or just the TTG? I would ban...

I'm still here! Xantham Gum
cyclinglady replied to ksymonds84's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Guar Gum. I actually use Pamela’s gluten-free flour which already has it. ....hey, congratulations on beating cancer!!!! ? -
Is it celiac????
cyclinglady replied to Sarah K.'s topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Which DGP was positive? The IgA or IgG version? What do you mean your IgA was negative? This is usually an Immunoglobulin A test. When used in conjunction with celiac disease testing, it acts as a control test. Some celiacs are IgA deficient and therefore only IgG tests should be used. How many biopsies were taken and where? Do you have the GI and... -
I'm still here! Xantham Gum
cyclinglady replied to ksymonds84's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yep! I still can not tolerate Xanthan Gum even after five years of being gluten free and a recent endoscopy confirmed that intestine is healed. I am pretty much grain free (so that includes soy and corn). Mostly because I am a diabetic and grains tend to elevate my blood sugars too much per my meter. I feel better too, I do bake, but I do not use Xanthan... -
Choosing against gluten-free?
cyclinglady replied to Amy in Austin's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am sorry that you are struggling to maintain a gluten free diet on a daily basis and in all social situations. Will your life be shortened? Who knows? I can tell you that I was not diagnosed until after I was 50. I had plenty of time to damage my body permanently. I have Hashimoto’s, which despite being treated with hormone replacement, still w...- 9 replies

Celiac Disease symptoms often overlap with other illnesses (odds are that Chinese food was a food poisoning issue). Some celiacs are asymptomatic. Personally, I was anemic and had no gut issues. The ONLY way to find out is to get tested. It is a simple blood test. Continue to consume gluten until all testing is done. http://www.cureceliacdisease...

Negative endoscopy
cyclinglady replied to V123's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That is good news! No celiac disease! I would follow your doctor’s advice. Consider adding in more veggies and fruit into your diet. You can trial a gluten-free diet now that testing is over. That might help. Did they rule anything else out? I would encourage you to obtain all your lab results and medical records. It is a very good thing t... -
Sherri, I am sorry that you are so uncomfortable. Perhaps it is your new gluten free diet. I saw that you mentioned that is is expensive which leads me to believe that you may have switched over to gluten free breads and other baked goods. These contain flours, gums, and additives that your body might be used to. Consider adding more fruit and veggies...

It sounds like your hives resolved. I had a six month bout with them. Antihistamines really helped. My doctors are not sure if Mast Cell or autoimmune is the root cause.

My kid has Raynauds. It freaks her classmates out. She wears shoes and wool socks all year round and we live in a warm state. It is autoimmune. She manages it by layering, turning up the heat, use lots of blanket throws. I have Hashimoto’s and celiac disease. So, having multiple autoimmune issues is common.

Well, you do need to replace some things because they are too porous or damaged to remove gluten. Things like old wooden spoons, scratched non-stick pans, toaster, colander, sponges, etc. Honestly, the list is long, so try getting a few celiac books at the library or Amazon. Consider reading through the Newbie 101 thread under the “Coping section”. ...

Welcome! I can not answer your question, but genetic testing is used as a last resource for ruling OUT celiac disease. Normally, while on a gluten diet, a person is tested for antibodies (just like you can test antibodies (different ones) for lupus, thyroid or type 1 diabetes (blood test). That cost is around $125 for the screening TTG IgA and IgA...
