  1. Not for celiac disease. There are some alternative sites promoting it for autoimmune issues, but no studies have been made to my limited knowledge (I am not a doctor). Besides the side effects are GI issues! Not great if you already have a damaged gut. I assume you are concerned about hair loss? How long have you been gluten free? Have other I...
  2. Just want to add my two cents. Buy some parchment paper to line your pans. Then you can lift the brownies or cake right out (or slide cookies) and then easily cut when cool. gluten-free flours tend to stick more than wheat flour. You can use quick release foil too.
  3. I hope it works out for you too!
  4. Great job! I am so happy for you!
  5. Welcome Valarie. I am glad you are seeing improvement. Have you had follow-up care to measure your celiac antibodies? This will help determine whether or not you are diet compliant. http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/how-often-should-follow-up-testing-occur/ Also, some celiacs become temporarily lactose intolerant. Does dairy bother...
  6. You will all get through this. There is a grieving process. Your life will be different, but it can be just as good. My hubby has been gluten free for 16 years. You can imagine my shock when I was diagnosed 12 years later. We only have one daughter who is sixteen, but so far she has not tested positive for celiac disease. We have adapted. My...
  7. I respectfully disagree about oats. While it is likely that your child will not react to oats (about 10% of celiac do) the goal should be to allow her feel better as fast as possible (get her antibodies into the normal range). This will help her to understand the benefits of being gluten free. There are plenty of alternative grains that can be used...
  8. If you do not have celiac disease, then all of these (see link) should be investigated and ruled out. http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/what-else-can-cause-damage-to-the-small-intestine-other-than-celiac-disease/ Medications can also cause villi blunting: http://www.thepatientceliac.com/tag/villous-blunting/
  9. During this time did you stop taking supplements? My body can not process the usual supplement forms (non-methylated) of b12 or folate. It caused my blood levels to be extremely elevated (above range). When I stopped taking a multi-vitamin, my folate and b12 went back into the normal range. Celiac disease can impact your liver as well and can resolve...
  10. I hope you find a solution. I am insulin resistant. So far, I have managed on just my my diet alone (gluten free and a low carb high fat diet). I am trying to avoid Metformin because I am assuming that my gut is my weakest part of my body, but as I stated earlier, Metformin has been around for a long time and is considered pretty safe. I basically eat...
  11. The side effects for Metformin are well documented. They can affect anyone -- celiac or not. Metformin is considered the "safest" for TD2. Have you tried the extended release version? The other TD2 drugs also have some serious side effects. Trulicity can cause gastroparesis) slow stomach emptying). Have you considered a low carb high fat diet...
  12. I would not say KarenG is clueless. I think she relies on studies (science) over company advertising. A study was done to determine if gluten-reduced beers are safe. It appears that they might be okay for some but not all celiacs. So, go ahead, drink the beer. No one is stopping you. But let's hope that you are not one of the celiacs that reacts. ...
  13. Nice to hear from you. Sorry to hear about the vitiligo. I have no solutions, but I hope someone else will. ?
  14. Two months on thyroid and you have not had follow-up testing? Too much can cause diarrhea because you could be hyper, instead of hypo. Ask your doctor for a lab test.
  15. Are you diagnosed with celiac disease, in addition to Hashi's and Lupus? Or did you go gluten free to help with those Other autoimmune issues?
  16. Get the copies of your celiac blood test panel. You may have just had the TTG IgA and the control test (Immunoglobulin A). The TTG is a good test, but does not catch all celiacs. If you still suspect celiac disease, the EMA and the DGP should be ordered based on this celiac disease diagnosis algorithm below. Keep in mind that some celiacs are seronegative...
  17. Well.....there is a reason why leading celiac centers do NOT use stool tests. They are considered unreliable. http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/why-dont-you-recognize-tests-stool-tests-or-otherwise-for-gluten-sensitivity-that-are-currently-available-through-companies-like-enterolab-or-cyrex/ What made you take this test? Are you displaying...
  18. Anemia can be present in several autoimmune disorders like Crohn's besides celiac disease. Ask your friend if her daughter was given a complete celiac panel. Because the mother was on a gluten-free diet, was the child Gluten Free or light? That might have impacted the celiac tests.
  19. Have you considered that he is swallowing lots of pool water that may not be clean? I am a swimmer. While our pool is constantly checked, not all pools are especially if there have been high temperatures and lots of swimmers. People with diarrhea should not swim per state health regulations (at least in our state). He may have picked up a bacteria...
  20. There a very few bacteria located in the small intestine compared to the colon. I do not get it either. Neither do researchers. This was attempted as a cure for C. diff. And not a cure for celiac disease. The patient had refractory celiac type II which is really bad (rare too) and he probably did not have a lot to lose. We do not know. Maybe they...
  21. Great advice! So glad you had a chance to talk to experts at UCLA. I have to laugh though. My grandfather's frying pan was crusted, literally, when I inherited it. No worries as far as bacteria as I always preheated it. There was no way I could scrub off the crud. I guess I could have gone to a sandblasting company to ask them to remove it, but since...
  22. Either wash them several times (gluten is sticky...it is not about sanitizing) or pop for some new ones. I kept my dish towels, but got all new dish cloths for washing dishes and wiping up spills.
  23. Welcome Mom! I am sorry that your daughter has been diagnosed, but soon she will be feeling better. Her diabetes will be easier to control too. Okay, these suggestions are just my opinions as I can not scientically prove cross contamination. ? Sometimes piece of mind is invaluable. First, do not work with wheat flour in the house. Flour...
  24. Welcome! You found a great support group here. Yep, just the gluten free diet. Try reading out Newbie 101 thread located under the "Coping" section of the forum. The University of Chicago has a well-written website. They answer lots of medical-related questions. For example, follow-up care: http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/how-often...
  25. Celiac symptoms can wax and wane. Each set of glutenings for me has brought forth new symptoms. So much so, that I have consulted with my GI only to find elevated celiac antibodies blood tests. Prior to my diagnosis, I only suffered from anemia. Looking back for years and years, I have suffered a variety of symptoms that were probably celiac-related....
