Coronavirus more susceptible to celiacs?
cyclinglady replied to Jewel Pancake's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I am older, so I am at more risk, but not because I have celiac disease. My celiac disease is in remission. Undiagnosed celiac disease patients can have a higher risk for bacterial pneumonia, just as they can for osteoporosis, cancer, anemia or other illnesses. Your previous links: “People with celiac disease showed a much higher risk of bacterial p... -
Coronavirus more susceptible to celiacs?

Great video! Nice to hear about COVID-19 from a celiac disease specialist (medical doctor/GI). Thank you for sharing. It supports what I said earlier in the thread. ? -
Coronavirus more susceptible to celiacs?
cyclinglady replied to Jewel Pancake's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Your link was about bacterial-related pneumonia and celiac disease and not viral pneumonia. These studies encourage vaccination for bacterial pneumonia. There is no vaccination for the COVID-19 virus. Also, the COVID-19 virus presents very differently in the lungs. This is not comparing apples to apples. Let’s not spread fear. -
Here is information about celiac disease testing that your local clinic can order. Know that children that young often do not have the antibodies developed for testing. https://celiac.org/about-celiac-disease/screening-and-diagnosis/screening/ In some countries, you can get an over-the-counter test. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles...

Maybe. Try calling the manufacturer. Find out exactly what is in the product or look online for a MSDS (material safety data sheet). -
Coronavirus more susceptible to celiacs?
cyclinglady replied to Jewel Pancake's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Maybe. Untreated celiacs can be more susceptible to any illness and that probably includes COVID-19. Your best bet is remain strictly gluten free. If you are a newbie, concentrate on non-processed foods if possible. Look for certified gluten-free products until you master the diet (and it has a steep learning curve). Do not eat out unless it is... -

Modified Food Starch can be made with wheat, but usually it is made from corn in the US. If it contains wheat, the label must note that wheat is in the product since it is one of the eight allergens per the FDA. https://celiac.org/about-the-foundation/featured-news/2016/01/gluten-free-101-need-know/ However, I side with Ferir. The best place to... -
Short Course of Steroids?
cyclinglady replied to agentace's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Just stay the gluten free course. I can tell you that once healed (and it took about a year (even though I already had been cooking gluten-free for my hubby for 12 years) because I had so many other related issues) my thyroid was no longer enlarged, and my nodules disappeared. My last gluten exposure caused autoimmune hives and gastritis. At least they... -
Well, there you go. Avoid consuming gluten at all costs. Taking medications that do not get to the root cause of your problem, might not be a good idea. I have autoimmune gastritis. It flares up when exposed to gluten. But sometimes it flares for no apparent reason, I took ranitidine when I was dealing with autoimmune hives (stated first in my...

gluten contamination...
cyclinglady replied to albane's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I use single-ingredient McCormick spices. Never had a gluten exposure from them and I am healed based on a repeat endoscopy/biopsy. If you are concerned about which foods may have gluten in them, consider subscribing to the Gluten Free Watchdog who actually tests products (like a mini Consumer Reports) and is unbiased (no advertising sponsors are accepted...- 17 replies

Short Course of Steroids?
cyclinglady replied to agentace's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Your GI gave you steroids in case of gluten exposures? That is not the standard treatment for celiac disease. Are you sure your doctor is celiac-savvy? I agree with Fenrir. Like him, I never had an elevated CRP and I had villi damage. You might have something in addition to celiac disease. Do not get “boxed” into a single diagnosis. I have nev... -
Gluten in Spices
cyclinglady replied to Must be gluten free's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I disagree. I use McCormick spices, but only the single, one-ingredient, versions — no mixes. I have never had a gluten problem with them. How do know for sure? I had a repeat endoscopy/biopsies and have completely healed from celiac disease. How long have you been gluten free? Did you know that it takes up to a year or longer to heal? That y... -
Good luck with getting brownie points for maintaining your blood sugar from your medical team! ?. I get the same response. Congratulations ??? for doing a great job on managing your diabetes. ??? I use fasting and consume a low carb diet. It works for me and keeps my meter happy. Do I cheat? You bet! But never with gluten, just carbs. ...

Deficiencies
cyclinglady replied to vgoebel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi! I remember you! I think it was because you only had an elevated DGP IgA on the celiac disease panel like me. How is your daughter? If you have been two years on a gluten free diet and are still requiring supplementation, I would think there was something other than celiac disease going on. My iron-deficiency anemia resolved within a few... -
Time. It takes time to heal. Most members report that it takes up to a year or longer to heal. Why? One reason is that the gluten free diet has a steep learning curve. You can expect setbacks. It can happen. Just keep moving forward. Consider avoiding processed foods and if you do, while learning, look for products labeled gluten-free. Do not...

What does his pediatrician say? Celiac disease has many symptoms that overlap with many other illnesses. If you suspect celiac disease, ask his doctor to test. Learn more about this simple blood test to screen for celiac disease: https://celiac.org/about-celiac-disease/screening-and-diagnosis/screening/ I hope you are able to figure it...

I am old! Postmenopausal. So, building bone was extra tough. I chose HRT for a year, lifted weights, walked, ran and ate well. I have not gained nor loss any more bone and have experienced no additional fractures. You should be able to recover provided you exercise and avoid gluten free junk food since you are young. I am not even sure most doctors...

I get your ranting! It is hard to remain gluten free, but it is doable and you can heal (I did!). Try to think of implementing strategies that can keep you safe and still experience fun, social situations. When I go out for coffee, I play it safe and just get coffee and add cream. I still get to hang with my friends. I always keep a cereal type...

This process is horrible.
cyclinglady replied to nickibeaks's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
While your points are valid, I suspect that saving money has a bit to do with it too. “The new guidance, published in the Journal of Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, could save millions of euros in direct healthcare costs each year as biopsies on children, and the required general anaesthetic to perform them, cost around €1,000 per patient.” ... -

Older scopes can not see any damage visually. I got the same message that “everything looks great” until the pathologist’s report came in showing severe damage. -
An ultrasound typically checks for gallstones, but it can not determine whether or not your gallbladder is functioning (emptying). I had my gallbladder out after it ceased to function (0% ejection rate). It was actually infected. I never had gallstones. Ultrasound tests were always normal. Ask for a HIDA test.

This is a tough topic and there are no easy answers. I think you just have to use your good judgement for you and your children. When my daughter was born, I nursed her for a very long time. I followed my allergist’s advice about introducing foods, starting with veggies at 8 or 9 months (the time she seemed to want food). I added meats, fruit a...

Gluten exposures have caused me to develop Autoimmune Hives which have last for over six months. Daily eruptions would occur from head to toe. Antihistamines helped with the itching and were prescribed by my allergist. Chronic Hives are commonly linked with thyroiditis. I have Hashimoto’s. Also Chronic Autoimmune Gastritis is also linked to t...
