  1. Consider using this tool by the American College of Cardiology to help determine if taking a statin is right for you. It is recommended by Consumer Reports: http://tools.acc.org/ASCVD-Risk-Estimator-Plus/#!/calculate/estimate/
  2. Valisure is a new type of pharmacy that tests OTC, prescription and supplements. I read about it in the September 16, 2019 issue of Bloomberg Business week. The article was called “How carcinogens and other impurities end up in the drug supply” by Susan Berfield, Evelyn Yu and Anna Edney. “Over 90% of the pharmaceuticals sold in the U.S. are gener...
  3. I subscribe to the GFW! Her site is invaluable. Her site is like a Consumer Reports for the gluten-free community. If you can afford a People magazine (or whatever) subscription, you can afford the GFW. The more subscribers, the more products she can test since she takes no advertisers (just like Consumer Reports).
  4. Not to be mean, but you would think that you would know by now that I do not supplement unless it is necessary. I have my vitamin and mineral levels checked as recommended for proper follow-up celiac disease care. I am NOT deficient in anything. I am a healed celiac! Did you actually read every line of my post? It is like you have blinders on...
  5. I do not consume Activia (too many carbs for me). I just checked the website and was shocked. ?. I am assuming this is the product that River500 ate. As you know, you gotta read labels every single time.
  6. Oh no! You have to read the label. Activia has a fiber option which contains wheat and barley as clearly stated on the label. https://www.activia.us.com/probiotic-yogurt/activia-fiber/peach I hope you recover fast!
  7. I think it is an individual decision that is worth researching. I tend to be a doubter. Remember the rush to put every older adult on a baby aspirin? I am allergic to aspirin, so I was not going to reap the benefits of it. Now, studies have show that it may not prevent heart attacks in those who have never had one. ? There is no doubt about statins...
  8. Never happened to me, but it might be related to a celiac flare up. Celiac disease is systemic. Since you are new, give the diet time. Most of us took a year or so to heal as the learning curve to the diet is steep. Maybe an another member can shed some light. Hang in there. ? If symptoms persist, contact your doctor.
  9. ? it really gets to me when Mom is right!
  10. Great news about your ferritin, etc. Sure signs of healing! You are now like a normal person — at risk for for higher cholesterol for the reasons Karen gave. That happened to me too. There is a big debate about cholesterol now. History shows that there is not a lot of scientific evidence showing that by cutting fats, we prevented heart attacks. ...
  11. I also read up on the genetic intolerance to mushrooms a few years ago — very interesting. The foods I mentioned previously typically trigger a skin reaction (hives/swelling) , tingling mouth, vomiting, passing out and stomach cramps. These were diagnosed by my allergist decades ago. I have avoided these foods for decades with the exception of Xanthan G...
  12. Only YOU can decide if you are going to maintain the diet which means being strictly gluten free. A hassle for sure when traveling, but that is the way it is. Consider learning to fast to help you avoid situations where you do not have access to safe food or carry gluten-free non-perishable food with you at all times. While I am diagnosed, my hubby...
  13. I assume that thrush was ruled out. Have you googled “white film on tongue”? Look for photos. My E.R. doc neighbor uses Dr. Google all the time. That and his medical training can help him make a diagnosis. Like this: https://health.clevelandclinic.org/what-your-tongue-can-tell-you-about-your-health/ Ooooo, Vitamin B-12 and folate def...
  14. My first endoscopy revealed nothing. I had to wait for the biopsies from the pathologist. I learned than the endoscope was an older model and did not have high magnification. So, do not rule out celiac disease yet! H. Pylori is bacteria (infection) that is attacking you. Celiac disease is autoimmune and your body is attacking itself. The celiac...
  15. @Scott Adams I am sorry to hear about your daughter. Has she decided to just go gluten free? I hope so! My own daughter was tested twice despite that she is symptom free. Her results were negative after doing a 12 week gluten challenge both times as our house is gluten free. We wanted to be sure celiac disease was firmly ruled out before...
  16. Food intolerances are real and so is a leaky gut (or whatever you want to call it). They are both common, especially with those who have celiac disease. How those intolerances (which differ from an IgE allergy response) work is still unknown. In the case of celiac disease, there is no evidence that the body is tricked into thinking that other foods...
  17. Welcome! Try typing in “spleen” in the forum search box. This topic has come up in the past.
  18. I am glad the medication is working for you. Are you also gluten free? I think in an earlier post you mentioned that despite being gluten free for four years you were still experiencing outbreaks. How strict are you on the diet? Your comments could help many who suffer with DH.
  19. If you are still sick after a glutening 9 months ago, either look to your diet or another illness. I developed a third Autoimmune disorder after a gluten exposure. Not everything can be due to celiac disease. Please consult with your doctor.
  20. Most likely tannins and a possible histamine intolerance. I had a family friend who made wine up in Napa. As he aged, he could no longer drink his red wines for the very same reason you gave. ?
  21. I am pretty sure Gallo uses stainless steel to contain their white wine like most wineries. It is cheaper for sure. Might be different for specialty boutique wineries, but even then, I have never been glutened by wine. It is safe to drink wine! It is gluten free. ?. If you do react, you might have an intolerance to alcohol (hard to digest when...
  22. It is not a theory. The Mayo Clinic’s recent celiac disease study revealed that 44% of first degree relatives had celiac disease and most did not have any symptoms. That is way up from the old 1 in 10 statistic. https://www.news-medical.net/news/20190822/Mayo-Clinic-Study-Calls-For-Screening-Of-Family-Members-Of-Celiac-Disease-Patients.aspx I a...
  23. Maybe your children are like me, and only test positive to the DGP IgA. Unfortunately, most doctors just order the common TTG test because it catches most celiacs but not all. A full screen containing all the celiac tests that measure antibodies is best. Then there about 10% of celiacs who are seronegative, meaning their blood tests are negative, yet intestinal...
