2 year old possibly having celiac
cyclinglady replied to Kayrod12's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My husband went gluten free 20 years ago per the advice of my allergist and his general practitioner. The diet worked. Does he have celiac disease? Who knows? He refuses to do a challenge and he remains faithful to the diet (no small feat). Twelve years later, I was diagnosed with celiac disease. He will be the first to tell you that I have received... -
2 year old possibly having celiac
cyclinglady replied to Kayrod12's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
All celiac testing (except genetic which just rules out celiac disease) requires a person of any age to be on gluten. If a person is gluten free, they can do a “gluten challenge”. This requires 6 to 12 weeks (varies based on celiac center) on gluten daily (1 to 2 slices of bread or equivalent) for the blood tests. Only two weeks are needed for an end... -
Choose other social things that do not involve food. Like hikes, movies, playing games, etc. You would be surprised at how much fun your family and friends will have. Another thing that I do is host gatherings. Everything is gluten free. No worries for me and everyone loves my gluten-free cooking. Friends help offset expenses by bringing unprepared...

But you are getting fiber. Any fruit or veggie is a source of fiber. And do you really need fiber? The Inuits survived without it. The reality is that there have be no long term studies on any diet. None. But that is another topic. Glad you are seeing a doctor. Not everything is due to celiac disease.

I was concerned about cookware. I gave away (other family member) my Grandfather’s cast iron frying pan and bought a new one. I also bought new wooden spoons, a cutting board, colendar, and a toaster. Anything that can be scratched or has tiny holes that are too hard to clean can harbor gluten. You can save cast iron (my pan was ancient). It must b...

Second opinion on lab results?
cyclinglady replied to Inkandpaper's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I am sorry that your daughter is ill. She did not get the complete celiac disease panel, which includes the DGP tests. Those are better for younger children (and maybe even really old people, like me). I test positive to only the DGP IgA and I am endoscopy/biopsy confirmed. If my GI had not run the complete panel, my diagnosis would have been missed.... -
Hernia mesh and autoimmune disease
cyclinglady replied to Jim Rockford's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Not much advice to offer, but I would check the FDA Medical Device MDR (adverse events) website for the mesh manufacturer your doctor uses (whichever doctor you choose). There was some scandal last year or the year before about this database being hidden. As a result many doctors and dentists did not have all the lastest information about product safety... -
Believe me, I use processed foods! It is just some simple advice when you feel overwhelmed trying to buy food and read labels as a newbie. Those Hormel bacon bits? Just like regular bacon. So handy to have. Costco (I suspect Hormel makes them) carries a larger size. I keep it in the freezer and it lasts months and months after being opened...

good for healin gi tract?
cyclinglady replied to DJFL77I's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It may be just me, but when I see just a link, I do NOT click on it, even when I kinda know you (despite the fact that you are a new and active member). Too many old people (I am old) have been hacked on FB and their emails. The AARP remind us all the time. I screen all my landline calls too (yeah, still have one of those) because I am a senior and scammers... -
Mystery solved! 😊. When new, best to stick to real food with simple ingredients (e.g. banana, carrot....) When you are not felling well, it is hard to read all those labels! I love bananas. I have a stash sliced and frozen. A nice treat in place of ice cream. Not processed. My kid adds drizzled gluten-free chocolate to her batch. More ad...

@JoLuvsFurries While it might be something in your diet, your constipation might be due to damage from celiac disease. My transit time was long. No prep for my colonoscopy worked. I had to do a double prep for my colonoscopy (had both endoscopy and colonoscopy). Yikes! Time and the gluten free diet may soon resolve your issues. Just something...

Ravenwoodglass has Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH) which is the celiac rash. A gluten exposure is visible. Our DH members are like “canaries in mine” and Ravenwoodglass has been on the diet for well over a decade, if I recall. I trust her valuable advice. No pharmaceutical is going to go the extra mile to offer gluten free medications because the...

Celiac panel results
cyclinglady replied to jlollman's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Well, this should be discussed with your doctor. Your son does have an usual result. His DGP IgG is elevated slightly. He should be referred to a GI for further evaluation. We have had members who have tested positive to only the DGP IgG and have been confirmed celiac via endoscopy. The elevated immunoglobulin A (IgA) could be due to any autoimmune.... -
TTG-IgA testing - any insight?
cyclinglady replied to sweeterin's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It takes time. Be patient. You are not going to heal in just a few weeks or months. Focus on the diet. Master it. Make sure you are not deficient in any vitamin and minerals (as Knitty Kitty advised and is recommended as part of celiac disease follow up care by celiac research centers) and make sure you are consuming nutrient-rich foods (real food).... -
My daughter is at a UC school. She recently used the University Health center via Teleconference. She really liked her doctor and was able to choose based on the doctor bios. She can choose another doctor if she wants. She can also go for a physical appointment, if needed. Another option is to go outside the network but it is a bit more costly. The...

Lactose intolerance causes significant abdominal pain, but no damage to the body. It is common in a huge percentage of the world’s population. If you can consume yogurt, milk, cheese, without any abdominal pain, then go ahead and eat dairy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactose_intolerance I would not worry about very high antibodies either. ...

@knitty kitty and @Posterboy You both have been concerned about vitamin and nutritional deficiencies. I confess since I do not have any (based on lab tests), I have been skeptical about promoting it so much to newly diagnosed members. (I am also a bit worried about the lack of FDA oversight since we are having issues with even prescription drugs......

Is Jello Instant Pudding Gluten-Free?
cyclinglady commented on Scott Adams's article in Gluten-Free Foods & Beverages
Just want to update my comment. The Kraft instant pudding line now has a version that includes wheat (thanks, Guest Vickie). Always, always read the label. I think the jello gelatin is still fine.- 14 comments

Is Jello Instant Pudding Gluten-Free?
cyclinglady commented on Scott Adams's article in Gluten-Free Foods & Beverages
Yikes! It DOES contain wheat. Wow! I would be worried about their other mixes being cross contaminated. I assume (not verified) that Kraft would use the same manufacturing line. So, what to do? Be like me and make your own pudding from scratch. I use gluten free (labeled) corn starch. You have to cook the pudding on the stove. Stirring constantly...- 14 comments

Oh, honey! Let me give you a virtual hug! I am a mom who has celiac disease and I can assure you that you can get well. With time, the anxiety you are experiencing will dissipate. Be patient. Again, it takes time. Why is everything falling apart when you just had anemia (like me)? It is because your body and mind can not longer go forward. Both are...

I I think your son should see a doctor. Diagnosing without a medical background can be harmful. It is obvious from your question that you do not know enough about celiac disease. It has nothing to do with how long gluten is in your body. Gluten triggers an autoimmune response that damages the small intestine and is also systemic. Other autoimmune...

Coronavirus more susceptible to celiacs?
cyclinglady replied to Jewel Pancake's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Type II diabetes is usually due to insulin resistance as a result of either age, weight, and genetics. Type I diabetes is autoimmune. If you have celiac disease, you can develop type I diabetes (at any age). Like celiac disease, doctors used to think that only kids developed type 1 diabetes, but we know anyone can become celiac (or type 1 diabetic) at... -
I tested positive to only the DGP IgA test. The control test, Immunoglobulin A was elevated, so in theory, all my celiac disease IgA test versions should have worked, but they did not. I have had the complete celiac panel run many times. Only the DGP IgA ever turns up positive so it is not a fluke. It seems that only small babies typically test positive...
