Seizures and celiac
cyclinglady replied to Kristen Bennett's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If I were dealing with DH or ataxia.....you bet I would not take ANY risks that would allow a potential exposure to gluten. Just trying to avoid another autoimmune disorder is enough to keep me on track. Having to manage celiac disease is hard. It is depressing and can be stressful. Unlike other illnesses where there is medical support, the entire... -
Gluten free stools
cyclinglady replied to Sarahcat58's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I can not really address the constipation issues @Ennis_TX has some pretty good tips. I can suggest the Autoimmune Paleo diet. It is meant to be temporary and then progresses to a fuller diet which still includes avoiding processed foods. I think you should consider eating at home and then just order a drink when out until you are feeling better... -
My non-celiac kid can’t even eat this stuff. When a processed food has more than five ingredients or ingredients I can not even identify off the top of my head or pronounce, I do not buy it. Mac and Cheese is easy to make from scratch. The other issue is that celiacs and their tolerance for gluten exposures can vary. 20 ppm just might be t...

Gluten free stools
cyclinglady replied to Sarahcat58's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Pencil thin stools for me is usually allergy or an intolerance. Start a food journal and rotate your foods every four days. Focus on meats, veggies and fruit. No processed foods (that pasta was processed). Soon you will know what bothers you. FYI. I am grain free due to diabetes (carb reduction) but when I went grain free I actually finally felt... -
The Keto diet was developed about 100 years ago to treat epilepsy before medications were developed. It is also pretty good at controlling blood sugar for diabetics. So, I would not say it is a fad diet. https://www.news-medical.net/health/History-of-the-Ketogenic-Diet.aspx

Welcome! First, give the gluten free diet time. Did you know most celiacs take over a year to heal? Why? Because most make dietary mistakes. Cross contamination is a huge problem. I would recommend a diet of non-processed foods and do not eat out until you see significant improvement. I have been at this over five years and I never go out unless...

While you may indeed have celiac disease, you could have Crohn’s too. Damage can be out of reach from both scopes. My niece was actually diagnosed with Crohn’s by a pill camera. Crohn’s can and does go into remission for years without treatment. Eye and joint issues are also linked with Crohn’s. The gluten-free diet can not hurt you. My ow...

Learning about Celiac
cyclinglady replied to Kelso2220's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hi! I think all your questions have been discussed SO many times on this forum. All have postings and responses have been archived. Use the search button, browse through the sections, and articles, and I think you will get a nice perspective of how celiacs cope with their disease. -
Low Ferritin
cyclinglady replied to veryami1's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There you have it. UC Berkeley. My own kid is experiencing hair loss (lots of shedding) and it does cycle. She is applying to universities right now (Berkley is one of them). She is under so much stress (high achiever) so we are not sure if this is due to autoimmune or just normal stress. Get your ferritin rechecked and get a CBC. My... -
This is excellent advice. We do the same thing (wet clean up, creating barriers, etc.) to prevent inhalation of ANY materials as we live in a very old house. We also have a dedicated air filter that is only used when we are doing construction. I do not have DH, but once activated, it can take a while for the antibodies to go away in the skin. ?...

You are doing well! It can take years for the TTG to come down. Really. http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/after-going-gluten-free-can-a-positive-ttg-mean-anything-other-than-gluten-present-in-my-diet/ Keep up the good work! And since I am having my first morning cup of coffee with cream, I suggest you do too! It will not cause a celiac...

Drink it. I use Horizon’s heavy whipping cream and Half and Half every single day. I would trust it. I have tried all the Commercial egg nogs. I prefer Strauss Organic egg nog because it is simply milk, cream, egg, sugar, and nutmeg. Heavenly! Worth the $7.00 a quart. But this is a California product, so it might not be distributed nationwide. ...

Traveling to Philippines & Thailand
cyclinglady replied to Kyle Scicluna's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Google those free gluten-free travel cards (print and save to your phone, but a print card is handy when wait staff heads back into the kitchen). They are available in many languages and can be given to anyone who is preparing your food or while at the market. Remember, when in doubt or if you have an uneasy feeling, order a drink to socialize and head... -
Sarah, Read the box. This “tea” is processed. It contains several ingredients that could be harmful (as stated on the box) and should not be taken with many illnesses like Inflammatory Bowel Disease which you could have since you are not diagnosed with anything yet because you are in school. Just because it is Kosher and organic (notice the...

Food allergies after fasano diet
cyclinglady replied to BilliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Glad you are okay. Besides your bed, check for bandages and clothing items (e.g. latex in socks) if latex is the culprit. My allergies (hypersensitivities) developed over the years and are probably not directly related to celiac disease though autoimmune is under the umbrella of hypersensitivity. This Wikipedia link explains hypersensitivity... -
Food allergies after fasano diet
cyclinglady replied to BilliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I am confused. You are dealing with two separate issues, correct? DH and food allergies/intolerances? DH Rash and hives? Do antihistamines help with the hives? Ask for this test: “The only mediator of allergic inflammation measured by routine diagnostic laboratories is mast cell tryptase, a product of mast cell granules. It is secreted during a... -
Food allergies after fasano diet
cyclinglady replied to BilliB's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
The good news is that you are improving. Consider doing a four day rotational diet with your foods. Look up the Autoimmune Paleo Diet and the Histamine Diets (could be a reason you are reacting to yogurt). Consider incorporating them into your rotational diet. Look up Mast Cell Activation Disorder or Syndrome. This can help explain your allergies. ... -
I can not give you any advice about the photos because I am not a doctor. Is this your 4th endoscopy in four years? (Previously you stated that you were diagnosed as a Marsh Stage III and that you have never been less than a Marsh Stage II due to your not adhering to a gluten free diet.) The one biopsy that was taken of the duodenum might reveal more...

Yes, maltodextrin can be derived from wheat, but in the US, that must be disclosed e.g. maltodextrin (wheat). Check the actual product label. Confirm with the manufacturer if this product is manufactured on a shared line with gluten containing items. https://www.glutenfreeliving.com/gluten-free-foods/ingredients/top-10-ingredients-you-really-dont...

Ore ida
cyclinglady replied to Jherm21's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I have a few packages in my freezer. While not certified gluten-free, it is marked Gluten Free on the label by Kraft. This means it has less that 20 ppm. They are pretty handy to have although admit it would be better to fry my own, but sometimes there is not enough time! I have eaten them and have never been glutened. -
Hi! Each lab has different ranges. Your lab should provide you with a lab range for each of those tests. Without ranges, it can be difficult to interpret, but I would guess the DGP IgA test is positive. That means you might have celiac disease. It only takes one positive on the celiac panel to move forward with more testing. The next step...

Silent Celiac Disease
cyclinglady replied to Real1's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome! I met with my GI for a colonoscopy (cancer screening) because I was 50 years old. My GI suggested getting an endoscopy and a celiac blood test as well since I was anemic and had been most of my adult life. I was shocked! I had taken iron tablets in the past, but my anemia always came back (iron-deficiency). I also have Hashimoto’s... -
changes
cyclinglady replied to healthysquirrel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think everyone goes through periods in their life where their interests change. Some are impacted by a move, the birth of a child, a new job or an illness. Since you are just newly diagnosed, cut yourself some slack. This is the time to take care of yourself. Once healed, you may go back to your other activities or you might not. But that is...
