gluten-free 3 years but constantly ill...
cyclinglady replied to CherylA's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
When was your last follow-up testing done for celiac disease? It should be done annually. This will help you determine if you have an active celiac flare or if you should look for a new illness. http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/how-often-should-follow-up-testing-occur/ All those vitamin supplements and fizzy drinks? Are you sure they are... -
Celiac or not?
cyclinglady replied to Lizzielou's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yeah, like remember they used to say that celiac disease affected just Northern Europeans? Now India has the most celiacs and China is now starting to report it. We are definitely still learning about celiac disease! -
Sounds like a good plan. I can share that my thyroid antibodies were once over 2,000. On the gluten free diet to treat my celiac disease, my thyroid antibodies went way down and my thyroid enlargement and nodules went away. My thyroid antibodies do increase if I get a gluten exposure now. That is something to look forward to. I can see why the...

How Long Does The Vomiting Last?
cyclinglady replied to coquimama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Was he biopsy-confirmed? How bad was his intestinal damage per the pathologist’s report? I can tell you that it takes time to heal — months to a year. Why? Dietary mistakes are often made. The gluten free diet has a steep learning curve. Read our Newbie 101 thread pinned at the top of the “Coping” section of the forum. Do not eat out unt...- 24 replies

cyclinglady replied to weebl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your GP might be just fine. Mine is great, but she is open to the research that I present to her. She has over 2,000 patients and really can not know everything. So, we work as a team. If you are going forward with the challenge, make sure it is for the proper length of time. We have seen too many members here who are in diagnostic limboland because... -

Is this gluten intolerance?
cyclinglady replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Get back on gluten if you want to consider getting tested for celiac disease. You can not diagnose based on symptoms because so many illnesses overlap. Here are the tests: http://www.cureceliacdisease.org/screening/ -

Help required regarding testing
cyclinglady replied to ROWAN6260's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is hard to say how much damage you may have now or later. Sometimes basic labs result can give you a clue to damage. For example, if you are iron deficient (low hemoglobin or ferritin). Your celiac disease could have been going on for years or just “turned on” recently. I think you need to do more research to help you make the correct decision. R... -

cyclinglady replied to weebl's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum! Consider a new doctor. Celiac testing does require you to be on a full gluten diet. If you go gluten free, you can be required to do a “gluten challenge” which is about 8 to 12 weeks! It is just two to four weeks if you skip the blood tests and go for the intestinal biopsies. https://www.cureceliacdisease.org/faq/wha... -
Contamination
cyclinglady replied to Audra K's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It depends. I think you said earlier that you suspected him getting gluten exposures at school. Everyone is different, but a few small exposures can trigger the immune system. Remember it can just be a crumb. 20 ppm is very tiny amount! And that cut off is just an average. Some sensitive celiacs can not even handle that! Antibodies will ramp up slowly... -
Help required regarding testing
cyclinglady replied to ROWAN6260's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome! Celiac disease symptoms can wax and wane. There are over 200 symptoms attributed to it. You might have a few that you would not think could be due to celiac disease. Not sure about your pain. Beside celiac disease, I have gastritis. It can cause a sharp pain (I call it pinching) under my left side just under my rib when I bend over... -
You need to get to a doctor. Go to an ER. They can not turn you away. You also need to find out if you can get medical insurance from the state. I know you had issues in the past, but surely that can be overcome? Can you find a public assistance attorney or health care advocate? This is probably not about celiac disease, but your Ulcerative Colitis...

Anxiety (also question about gluten free experience)
cyclinglady replied to Anna1990's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
This can be a good thing. Often times, we change our diets and not for the better. Many celiacs trade junk food for gluten free junk food (e.g. processed chips, candy, cakes, etc) when they should probably choose foods that contain the most nutrients like vegetables, fruit, nuts, meats, fish, and fats. The dietician can help insure you are getting... -
Lower right rib pain
cyclinglady replied to Peter D.'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
We are all unique. No one knows for sure how fast antibodies ramp up. For some it is within hours and others a few days. Repeated exposures can be worse. Once triggered it can takes weeks to stop or months. Celiac disease is like lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis or MS except we know the trigger: gluten. The other AI disorders? ... -
Anxiety (also question about gluten free experience)
cyclinglady replied to Anna1990's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Not everyone here on the forum has celiac disease, so you are free to post. ? It sounds like you have seen improvement with the diet. Maybe your anxiety will completely resolve if you really avoid cross contamination. That is something to consider. I am concerned about your lack of appetite. That does not seem normal. Even when I am glutened... -
Ronaboat makes an excellent point. Were you gluten free when you had the celiac blood test? All celiac disease testing (even an endoscopy to obtain intestinal biopsies), requires you to be on a full gluten diet (6 to 12 weeks for the blood test and 2 to 4 for the endoscopy). Did you know that there are seronegative celiacs? Did you get the full...

Lower right rib pain
cyclinglady replied to Peter D.'s topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Refractory Celiac Disease is RARE. Non-celiac savvy doctors are quick to jump to it because the small intestine should heal quickly in theory. Healing can take more than a year. Why? Because the treatment for celiac disease is in the hands of the patients. Dietary mistakes are made ALL THE TIME. Not to mention that the antibodies testing was ONLY... -
You are between a rock and a hard place! Why would they even allow an endoscopy to check for celiac disease with only an 11 day challenge when a full 14 to 28 days are recommended by all celiac centers? Why did they not follow the GI Association of Canada’s guidelines? I do not know whether to congratulate you on doing a good job adhering t...

Test Results - left uncertain?
cyclinglady replied to SaraNF83's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She had periodic severe abdominal pain. It would strike her usually during a fun event (like a vacation). We thought she had celiac disease for sure, but we were wrong. She is also very tiny, but then so are some of her relatives. When you have TWO very positive celiac tests, celiac disease seems pretty evident, but the biopsy will help confirm... -
Test Results - left uncertain?
cyclinglady replied to SaraNF83's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Sara, Celiac disease can develop at any time. When you last had your endoscopy, you might not have had active celiac disease or your doctor failed to obtain enough intestinal biopsies. Usually four to 8 are required as damage can be patchy since the small intestine is vast (size of tennis court). See if you can get the pathologist’s report and d...
