Sounds like things are looking up for you! I'm glad you've found another boy with celiac that your son can meet. That might really help him.
If your family doesn't like gluten-free pasta, you should try a different brand. I buy DeBoles brand and anyone I feed it to can't tell the difference. I think it's a pretty common brand since I've found it in several stores in different areas of the country. Everyone always mentions Tinkiyada pasta, too. I've never tried it but I hear it's fantastic all the time on this site.
I really like Food for Life brand bread if you're looking to buy some (you mentioned using mixes). This is also a brand I've found in several areas of the country.
Does your husband ever cook? Maybe he can help you out on those days that you just don't want to cook.

Yes, that will be enough to make you sick. At least you realized your spices have wheat in them now rather than later. I screwed up a lot in the first six months so you're certainly not alone.
I agree that it's silly for spices to have gluten in them. Most spices are gluten-free, you must have just gotten unlucky with your brand.

I've been gluten-free for 14 months and I think my glutenings are less severe now. I still get all my old symptoms back but I'm still able to function and live my life. The symptoms can drag on for two weeks, though.

does anyone know a good brand of candy corn for this season? just some that could be picked up at target or something like that. Thanks
Wal-Mart brand candy corn is gluten-free. [i do want to say that I didn't call and ask, though. The ingredients were all gluten-free and I didn't get sick from them, but you may want to call aout CC].
I have some lists of gluten-free candy that I copied from this site. Here they are:

In regards to your inquiry, there are eight major food allergens, including milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (such as walnuts and almonds), soy, wheat, fish and shellfish. Labeling regulation requires that all ingredients added to products be listed in the ingredient statement. For these eight major allergens, Nestlé ensures that they are labeled, regardless of the amount or whether a supplier may have added it to their ingredient. It is the responsibility of Nestlé to ensure that these ingredients are properly labeled by their common or usual name in the ingredient statement. We want to help our consumers avoid inadvertent ingestion of their specific allergens of concern by accurately informing them about the product ingredients and by following Good Manufacturing Practices in our factories. All factories using a critical allergen as an ingredient must take all reasonable precautions to avoid cross-contact of products that do not normally contain these allergens and products that do not carry a specific mention in the ingredient statement. These precautionary measures include efficient cleaning of production lines and equipment And strict separation of materials that may contain critical allergens. If an allergen does not appear on the ingredient statement, then it has not been added to the product and the likelihood of cross-contamination contact is so extremely low that the risk is insignificant. We have also attached a copy of our gluten-free confection list. We hope you find it helpful. We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you and hope your inquiry was handled to your satisfaction. • NOT GLUTEN FREE Zachary Brand Candy Corn (In regards to the e-mail that we recently received regarding the use of the listed ingredients used in the manufacturing of Candy Corn I must explain that these types of candies are technically gluten free. However, we do in our facility have other items that do have ingredients that contain gluten ingredients and unfortunately we do not have the area in our manufacturing facility to segregate these items from one another. Therefore there is an opportunity for there to be cross contact with storage containers and manufacturing equipment that could potentially lead to these candy corn items having trace ingredients of gluten. So unfortunately I cannot guarantee one hundred percent that even though these candies do not contain any ingredients that contain gluten that this product had not come in contact with items and equipment that have. Obviously we are very sympathetic as food manufacturers with issues such as allergens and other intolerances. It is our desire to have as many people as possible to enjoy our candies and be able to eat them without fear of any health consequences. However as a small manufacturing facility we cannot go to the lengths and measures that larger companies can in regards to segregation of ingredients, washing of equipment between shifts or having a separate facility to manufacture only certain products containing problem ingredients and thereby eliminating cross contamination issues. I wish I had a more positive answer for your question but unfortunately in cases like this I would rather be sure than to indicate that there is nothing in the candies and have something happen that could jeopardize someone’s precious health.

I agree with everyone else that having a gluten-free household would mean that he doesn't have the option to eat anything else and will lessen his feeling "different" than other people. If the gluten food isn't there, he can't eat it. Is the problem that he wants to be "rebellious" and not listen to you or is it that he really doesn't like the gluten-free food? If it's the second option, you may have to look at some of his favorite gluten foods and try to figure out a way to make them gluten-free and still yummy. There are tons of good gluten-free meals that you can make so if taste is the issue, you should check out the recipe section on this site.
Have you ever asked him to help you make meals? Maybe you should try asking him to help you plan the week's menu, take him grocery shopping with you, have him help you in the kitchen. He might feel more "ownership" over the food them rather than feeling like you're forcing him to eat stuff he doesn't like/want. Plus it's never to early to start teaching your kids to cook It will make things easier for him later in life when he does have to deal with this on his own.
I put my gluten-free flours in clear plastic tupperware. It makes them easy to store that way and stops the moths getting in.
Good luck!

I'll check out knickiknick.com. Seems like I could also use my "failed" crumbling cookie experiments. Unfortunately I've gotten much better at baking and I don't have as many crumbling messes.
Here's the gluten recipe. I probably should have thought to post this in the first place.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars - GLUTEN VERSION
2 Cups Peanut Butter
¾ Cup Butter (softened)
2 Cups Powdered Sugar
3 Cups Graham Cracker Crumbs
2 Cups (12oz) Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
--------------------------------------------------------------------
· Beat 1 ¼ cups peanut butter and butter until creamy
· Gradually beat in 1 cup powdered sugar
· Work in remaining powdered sugar, graham cracker crumbs and ½ cup chocolate chips by hand or with spoon
· Press evenly into greased 13x9 pan
· Melt remaining ¾ cup peanut butter and 1 ½ cups chocolate chips on low heat, stirring constantly
· Spread over graham cracker crust
· Refrigerate for at least one hour until chocolate is firm, cut into bars
· Store in refrigerator

Maybe he meant that he's interested to see what the results are. Which would make sense because why would anyone run a test if they didn't care about the result.
Happy Birthday, Alivia!

Kbtoyssni,
I was in my early 40's when I found out I had Celiac Disease. My son was in his early 20's, thanks to knowing I had the diesease, we knew what to look for when it came to my son. I suspect my grandmother had Celiac Disease, but diagnosis wasn't really dealt with much at all then. Bless her heart, she had to wear gloves to cook with flour (like when baking bread) and her stomach was so swollen. I lost weight (one time 12 pounds in two weeks) yet my stomach was really swollen. I looked like I was 6 months pregnant. My son was the opposite of me, as it blew my son up all over. When he went on the Celiac Diet, he lost 90 pounds in year. When he was diagnosed I knew how to cook gluten free well, so his weight loss wasn't from lack of good food. If your grandmother has any info on what restricts to follow on the Diverticulitus Diet, I would greatly appreciate her input.
Thanks,
Jpmat
My grandmother recently passed away, so I can't ask her about her diverticulitus diet. As far as I know, I don't think she had a specific diet to help with it, though. I saw someone posted about not eating nuts and I know my Grannie ate those. She would often visit for six weeks at a time and I never once remember making any alterations in what we ate for her. I should ask my mother. She might know better.

just to add my 2cents....Good Harvest off of Silvernail...the organic food store in the Pewaukee/Waukesha area has told me that if I know I am coming to give them a call and they will make certain to have a guten free lunch prepared for me. They said they don't have it on the menu b/c not enough people show up and it goes to waste, but if they know ahead of time they will prepare pasta or etc. for me.
And the manager in there is VERY helpful answering questions and etc.
I love this grocery store. They stopped selling my favorite black rice bread due to low demand, but if you call them and say you'll buy the whole case (6 loaves) they'll order it special for you.
I went here a few days after I went gluten-free and the manager must have noticed me and my mum wandering around confused. He spent a good twenty minutes with us showing all the gluten-free options and gave us a coupon for the next time we came in.

Maalox is NOT gluten-free. I don't know what the gluten-containing ingredient is, but I've got a giant YES/NO list of brands I read about on this message board, and it's in the NO column.

Testing is going to be extremely inaccurate since your son is so young. (Which is a good thing - it means he's too young to have much damage yet). You might want to get the enterolab genetic testing done. If he's got the gene and wheat and oatmeal makes him vomit, I think you have your answer. I don't have any kids, but if I did I don't think I'd be able to feed them wheat knowing it will probably make them sick. Maybe your doctor is thinking it's one of those childhood allergies that he'll grow out of, but if it's celiac he's not going to grow out of that. Go with your gut feeling and stop feeding him wheat and gluten. I'm sure he'll be much happier and healthier for it.

I've been gluten-free for 14 months and although my brain fog is much improved, I do occasionally still get it for no good reason. All of a sudden I'll just draw a giant blank on very simple things. I do, however, suspect other food intolerances so that could be the reason.

I'm glad you were able to make such a fantastic sounding lunch on short notice. Have fun at the harvest fair!

I used to love my Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars. They are the kind with the smashed graham cracker crust mixed with PB, butter and powdered sugar with melted PB and chocloate on top. I'd love to make them again, but I haven't found any good gluten-free graham cracker substitutes. Does anyone have any ideas for what I could use instead? Or any similar gluten-free recipes?

Thanks for sharing! I just made pumpkin cupcakes last night. I'll probably try these when the cupcakes are gone.

Taking Omega-3 supplements can help, too. From my understanding - your brain needs "good" fats to function but most of us don't get enough good fats so our brain can't work properly. We mostly get Omega-6s. I don't remember the exact statistics, but way back in the day humans used to eat about 50% Omega-3 and 50% Omega-6. Now we eat maybe 5% Omega-3s so our brains aren't functioning as well.

You have a panic attack when your manager puts the meeting sign-in sheet on the table next to the bagels and donuts... And you spend a good five minutes trying to figure out if you should ask a coworker to sign in for you or email your manager to tell him you were there before finally signing the sheet... using your own pen of course and being ever so careful not to touch the table or the paper... which means your name is practically illegable but you don't care because it means you avoided touching the gluten crumbs!

If it is the yeast that's a problem, it might not be unusual that you're reacting to it now when you didn't before. Before your body was so overloaded from all the gluten it probably didn't have much left to fight the yeast but now that it's healed the yeast is starting to become the "dominant" food intolerance.
I sometimes get random symptoms, too. I have a lot of trouble tracing them and most of the time I am 99.999% sure it has nothing to do with gluten. I try to find a pattern, but I just can't. Sometimes I wonder if it's quantities of food that I eat. Maybe I only react if I eat a certain amount. Or I only react when my immune system is already stressed out from illness.
-
Yes, you can either be allergic to wheat/gluten or have an intolerance (which I consider the same as celiac, just not as advanced in the damage done to the body). These are two very different reactions in the body. Think about people with peanut allergies (I just pick this because it's so well known). These are often anaphalatic reactions. I have a peanut intolerance so I'm not going to die if I eat peanut, I just don't feel well (kindof like how I feel with gluten).
Wheat is one of the top eight allergens, too.
-
My grandmother also had diverticulitus and I suspect celiac as well. My mother has celiac and this is her mother so tracing the genetics and the symptoms, I'd say my grandmother had celiac. Sorry I can't be of more help. It seems like most people here know someone diagnosed with diverticulitus and undiagnosed celiac.

At the store today I noticed they were selling chlorine-free disposable diapers, so maybe chlorine could be the problem?

You should still go. I go out to lunch with my coworkers all the time and bring my own food. No one cares; they're all just hapy I can make it. The restaurants don't mind either. If they don't let me bring my own food they know we'd have to go somewhere that can accomodate me and they don't want to lose the business of all my friends. It's a little strange to start reaching into your lunchbox when everyone's meals arrive, but you gt used to it.
I went to a buffet once and handed them a cheese sandwich in one of those toaster bags for them to make me a grilled cheese. The server was thouroughly confused for a while at my one instruction for her: DON'T TAKE THE SANDWICH OUT OF THE BAG!

I'm so sorry you have to deal with all this. I always feel that a bride should be considerate of her bridesmaids. Your bridesmaids should be people who mean enough to you to want them in your wedding party no matter what their financial situation. A bride should be considerate of money and make some compromises to allow your bridesmaids to be in the wedding without too big of a financial burden to them. You obviously didn't get one of those brides which stinks and it doesn't sound like you can even talk to her about the situation.
Someone needs to smack some sense into this bride! Honestly, who cares what you eat during a dinner??? It's not like you eating something different is inconveniencing her or ruining her day. You're bringing your own food so it's not like she has to do anything extra. Ok, this is making me mad as I think about it more. And about that shower - I'd tell her that you had discussed something smaller and that was fine, now that she's dictated the caterer and activites you can't afford it...
Do you think you might get a better reaction if your parents or the other maid of honor talked to the bride about the situation?
Good luck with the wedding and finding a job. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

If you're semi-gluten-lite that could easily influence the test results. I am under the impression that if you have one positive blood test, then you have celiac even if you have multiple negative blood tests or scopes. I think it just depends on what you were eating around the time of the blood tests. It doesn't seem like the testing is that accurate, so if you have one positive, I'd say you have it.l

At my parent's house, my dad has one counter that he uses for gluten foods, one cutting board, one knife. His gluten things are not allowed on the gluten-free side of the kitchen. My dad is also fantastic about wiping up after himself. Even with all the precautions, I still get nervous when I visit. I live alone right now in an entirely gluten-free apartment and I get nervous just knowing that there's gluten lurking in the house that might get me.
I've read of some people making the gluten-members of the family keep their gluten cookies in ziplock bags in the garage and they're only allowed to eat them outside.
