I remember my gastroenterologist saying to me once, when I was complaining of generalised itching, "Coeliacs get itchy skin". Our appointments aren't long so I never asked him why. However, at the time I got the impression that he wasn't talking about Dermatitis Herpetiformis, but generally itchy skin. He will have seen many hundreds, if not thousands...

See link, and extract from it, below. If this is anything to go by, it would appear that exposure to wheat could cause issues. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK538209/ "Deterrence and Patient Education It is essential to determine the triggers for a patient with atopic dermatitis. Waiting time
cristiana replied to Sassybear's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I ought to add, if you think it is possible you will need an endoscopy afterwards do make sure you continue to include gluten in your diet. The recommended amount is 2 slices of normal i.e. gluten containing bread or the equivalent until the test date. -
Waiting time
cristiana replied to Sassybear's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You are more than welcome. It could be that things are a bit slower at this time of year with the uptick in hospital staff off with various winter illnesses but you should get your result soon. I would say it is worth chasing if you hear nothing after three weeks. Do come back to us once you have the results if we can help any further. Cristiana -
Waiting time
cristiana replied to Sassybear's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello Sassybear, Good to have you on board! I'm posting from the UK. It seems to me that this varies a lot and could well depend on your local NHS waiting times, or your private clinic's lab. I tend to see my consultant once a year for a review. My bloods tend to be taken on the Thursday and are back in time for his clinic the following... -
@icarumba Try emailing them - I used to work for a company called Goodman Fielder Wattie back in the day in London, assume it's the same people. They had an office in Piccadilly. https://wonder.com.au/contact

Conflicting Lab Ranges
cristiana replied to cristiana's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thank you RMJ, that makes sense. I think the cut-off point for Hb levels at the lower end haven't changed since my blood was first tested pre-celiac diagnosis ten years ago, but the higher levels have been adjusted down, certainly in my area. I suspect this is possibly a WHO revision, or similar. It might explain why perhaps the doctors who have been... -
I've just had an operation and the hospital ran some blood tests before I went into surgery. My Haemoglobin was flagged as just above range (15.2 - normal lab values for women cut off at 15) and my Red Blood Cell Count was 5.18 (normal lab values for women cut off at 4.8). Looking at my coeliac blood tests over the last eleven years I've noticed...

Mom Called Selfish for Making Gluten-Free Cake for Daughter's Birthday
cristiana commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Additional Concerns
I've just done some detective work and discovered the thread on Mumsnet where this discussion originally appeared. I am really surprised to read the negative comments about gluten-free cakes. The gluten-free cakes I buy or make are to my mind at least just as good, I really can't taste the difference. I also googled the photograph - hoping there...- 8 comments

Mom Called Selfish for Making Gluten-Free Cake for Daughter's Birthday
cristiana commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Additional Concerns
A UK perspective: I make gluten free cakes all the time with Dove Gluten Free Flour. They tend to be what the French call "Quatre-Quarts" cakes - you weigh the eggs, then use the same weight of gluten free self-raising flour, fat and caster sugar. Put all the ingredients in together, so easy, with of course the necessary flavourings.. I use the same...- 8 comments

Hi Aaron Yes, worth reading some articles about the permanency of this condition it but having done so myself, I came away concluding adult eczema is something that I will need to learn to live with. Oddly enough, I when I wrote my post to you I was thinking "I haven't had a flare in ages" - only to be awoken last night with unbelievable itching...

Hi Aaron I sometimes have extreme itchiness, where I can't see anything on my skin. At times it has felt like I've been bitten by mosquitoes bodywide, or sometimes it has been just patches of skin, like the nape of my neck, round my waistline, chest, back etc. When I have a flare changes of temperature makes the itching worse, and the itching does...

Don't worry, @Aaron2018, it isn't always easy to see esp. as it had just been reopened. 🙂 An old thread but I thought seeing as it's live again I'd add another thought. In the UK a lot of students are choosing to take up apprenticeship schemes over college and uni. An apprenticeship scheme in a gluten free catering establishment could be a great wa...

Ah... yes... @knitty kitty. I forgot the all important magnesium. That's amazing stuff! I remember the most annoying eye twitches around the time of my diagnosis and a lot of people on this forum had posted about the wonders of taking magnesium for twitches. The twitching around my eyes led me to believe something really awful was going on, net result...

Hip Pain
cristiana replied to MaryJb Here's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
@MaryJb Here You may wish to look into sacroiliac pain, and referred pain from sacroiliac issues (can affect thighs, hips, buttocks, groin) I had shocking sacroiliac pain around the time of my diagnosis and for some time afterwards. It has greatly improved but I still get it from time to time. I found bloating greatly exacerbated it, as well... -
Hi Raquel Yes, but when I was first diagnosed I had diarrhea when I consumed yoghurt, milk (strangely, even lactose free) and soft cheeses. However, cheddar cheese was fine, which is low in lactose but high in casein, or so I am led to believe. Now I am fine with all the above, but I still find that if I am a bit constipated a couple of lattes...

Hello @knitty kitty and @Raquel2021 Yes... re: Dexa scans. Here in the UK these are normally offered by state medical care (the National Health Service) following a coeliac diagnosis. I think I had one shortly after my diagnosis (within the first year) and had another one perhaps five years later? A very straightforward test - you lie flat on...

Hello Keith I am so sorry you are still experiencing these issues. The first port of call in situations like this is to be absolutely sure that no gluten is sneaking in. I had a 'relapse' some months after my diagnosis and it took me very long time to work out I was buying an iron supplement that had gluten in it. There is a gluten free iron and...

Hi Carmen22 I'm so sorry you are still in so much pain. Apart from the great advice above, I would recommend temporarily you look into diets to relieve reflux and gastritis. I get both, normally after an episode of glutening but sometimes not. Generally speaking, such diets avoid spicy and fatty foodstuffs, citrus fruits, tomatoes, alcohol...

Traveling to Italy with Celiac Disease
cristiana replied to Mary Quattrone's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hello Mary I have family in Italy. My experience is that city supermarkets, and those of larger towns, contain a really good range of gluten free products, whereas in villages you may find the offer more limited to basics such as dry pasta and the most basic cookies (or biscuits, as we say in England, sorry, not sure where you are posting from). However... -
GLUTEN FREE CHALLENGE FOR BIOPSY
cristiana replied to STE9900's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
@STE9900 - Hi! How frustrating, I am so sorry you are going through all of this. This sort of thing is so difficult, often views differ between specialists on all sorts of things. I'm going through this with a different health issue at the moment here in the UK and I keep being told different things by different experts. If you have the funds...- 18 replies

Chiming in here to say that if dermatitis herpetiformis and shingles are eliminated, one other thing it might be is adult onset eczema. I got it during one of the lockdowns, so I guess it must have been about 21/2 years ago. I had it first on my chest, then it went to my scalp, then my midriff. It seemed to be both sides too. My doctor thought at...

Celiac Rates Among First-Degree Child Relatives Run Between 11% and 14%
cristiana commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Latest Research
This is a very interesting article but I am afraid I don't understand some of the terminology. For anyone who can, are they saying here that if a coeliac mother has a baby, the baby has a 11-14 per cent chance of having coeliac disease? I've read so many differing statistics. The one that has been bandied about here in the UK is that there is...- 4 comments

Hi @TheSootyShow Love your name - I was a great fan of Sooty when I was little, and my children too! I'm in the UK so thought I'd chip in here. I know someone who had a private endoscopy with no positive blood tests - she had had a lot of gastric issues and just wanted to rule it out, and a private consultant was happy to do it. She didn't have...
