  1. Hi LiJ Welcome to the forum! I am not sure where you live but here in the UK, gluten-free baked products are very much in demand. According to the Guardian newspaper, 1 in 10 customers are now avoiding gluten - that's a lot of people buying gluten-free, whether they are gluten intolerant, have coeliac disease or are avoiding it for some other reason...
  2. The really memorable one was Trimethoprin which I took for a UTI. My stomach burned so badly, and I got heartburn. It was so bad I reported it through the Yellow Card system in the UK. The only way I could finish the course was to take Nexium, under medical supervision, and even then I still had symptoms, just not so bad. I think I was unfortunate...
  3. I think it's really interesting that your gastritis symptoms occurred after the gluten challenge. Glutening causes the most awful burning sensation in my stomach that can last for some time. I don't drink alcohol as it has always tasted like medicine to me but the one time I did when I had gastritis the pain was unbearable. And like your brother, I also...
  4. Hello Elkwestern Welcome to the forum. Do you know if the person who conducted the endoscopy actually took biopsies of your gut? The reason I ask is that I got the results of my first endoscopy in installments - if your experience mirrors mine, it could be they haven't analyzed the biopsies yet. In my own case I had very strong TTG readings which...
  5. Hi Thomasm5 Definitely worth taking up Trent's advice. However, I would say if your diet and exposure to sunlight has changed, that would probably also make a difference. I don't know where you are posting from but coeliacs in the UK, where I live, can see a nutritionist through the National Health Service who give free dietary advice. ...
  6. Hello Thomasm5 and welcome to the forum Aside going gluten free, has your diet changed in other ways? If you are eating more vegetables and less meat, for example, that could account for there being less vitamin B12 in your diet. Also, prior to your diagnosis, were you consuming bread and cereals made with fortified wheat flour? In the UK, calcium...
  7. I know someone who was sectioned and the hospital didn't cater for coeliacs. Friends and family had to send in food (at least they were able to, unlike in the situation above). This article makes me wonder just how many elderly and vulnerable people are in similar situations but for the long term in care homes etc?
  8. I feel I ought to start a new thread for curry recipes. Maybe one for the New Year, for all the leftover turkey!
  9. Yes, you are right, Scott - the dish you speak of is Chicken Tikka Masala and I read that one in seven curries sold is a Chicken Tikka Masala! It's my favourite by far! In fact, I ate one last night! But don't talk to me about the small warning! That's one of my bugbears with food labelling in the UK - too small to read, or, listing a "may also contain...
  10. I put a sad face above there as I haven't been able to eat a curry from any of those places since I was diagnosed coeliac. The Indian ones in the UK supermarkets are generally gluten-free, none of the rest are... I miss Chinese curries in particular. I guess I could try to cook my own from scratch though!👩‍🍳
  11. Hello Diamonds Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry to read that you are struggling. Can you tell us a bit more about your story - how long ago you were diagnosed, and what sort of support you have had in the past from the medical profession, friends and family in your coeliac journey? Some find it easier than others to stick to the diet...
  12. Hi Carol You can search through this forum and you will find quite a lot of advice on how to deal with gastritis and/or reflux through diet and may help your symptoms of bloating, if these conditions are causing it. There is a thread I started on slippery elm which might help. https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/118711-gastritis-or-glutening-slippery...
  13. Sorry, it must mean something different in American English! If someone in England says they've eaten a curry, this is what is meant. From the Cambridge Dictionary: a dish, originally from South Asia, consisting of meat or vegetables cooked in a spicy sauce.
  14. It can certainly take a while to recover from glutening, but I have taken a couple of weeks in the past to get over an upset stomach caused by drinking a very large iced drink in Spain which we call slushies here in the UK, not sure what they are called in the States. I expect there was something dodgy in the water. I couldn't get rid of it, until one day...
  15. Hello Carol and welcome to the forum! I have bouts of this myself - in fact, at the moment, I'm there too! I have come to the conclusion that in my own case I suffer from mild gastritis, which can be caused by inadvertent gluten consumption but also by eating too much fatty or rich food and certain medication such as NSAIDs and antibiotics. When...
  16. Hi Sparechange I wonder if you have altered your diet at all, or are taking any new medicines which might have this sort of effect? I understand when you say you are scared. I am a terrible worrier when it comes to health. I spend a lot of time debating should I/shouldn't I pick up the phone to fix a doctor's appointment but in the end, I pluck...
  17. Is the elevation very marked for the ast and alt ranges - can you provide the numbers? Sorry... I'm making you work hard here!
  18. Ginger... I get a cough and tickle in my throat when I get reflux, which in my case can be triggered after glutening, or after taking certain medication (NSAIDs and antibiotics primarily) or by just eating too much rich food. I've noticed these past two or three years it starts up after my birthday - too much cake! Just a suggestion for you in case you...
  19. Hello Linny Well, I guess the good news is that your TTG is still at very low levels, compared with your diagnosis. I've struggled with higher levels than I'd have liked but my consultant has never been particularly concerned. He says to me that even if I were to just drink water and eat rice all year round I'd probably have slightly elevated levels...
  20. You are very welcome. I seem to remember there was a thread on this forum some years ago about dishwashers and the general consensus was that dishwashers were good at removing gluten - I don't think one necessarily has to spend a fortune on a top-end one, just one that actually works as it should would be fine (unlike our dodgy one!)
  21. Hello Lynda I do have a granite chopping board which I put in the dishwasher - but obviously that's not something you can do with an entire work top! I suspect the answer is lots of hot soapy water, then more, and more again. You may find it easier just to get a separate chopping board that you can put in the dishwasher if you are worried? I had...
  22. Hello Linny I wonder if you could post your numbers - it would be really helpful to know what your TTG readings were before and now, if you have them? Also, which liver enzymes have gone up? Without knowingly changing your diet, one explanation could be that the ingredients of something you are eating that was previously gluten free may now include...
  23. Thanks Emjean, Happy Christmas to you too. Let's hope Omicron is milder as some experts seem to be suggesting!
  24. Thank you. I love Christmas but Omicron has put paid to our Christmas Dinner plans with wider family already. We're not sure where things are going with this locally but being a hypochondriacal pessimist, I prefer to err on the side of caution. Thankfully there is a lovely outdoor Christmas event nearby which hopefully is slightly lower risk, we're hoping...
  25. Yes... sorry, I had to have a scope for reasons other than coeliac disease - don't worry! Coeliac friends who were diagnosed the same time as me have never had more than the one!
