Celiac and Mental Health Issues?
cristiana replied to AlwaysLearning's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
It is so sad that there might be people suffering all this without realising the root cause is gluten and deficiencies. BTW @Russ314, I see you are from Scotland. Wonderful country! -
Gluten-Free Shoppers Report Food Scarcity and Soaring Prices
cristiana commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Additional Concerns
This is an interesting article, thanks Jefferson. I'm British and although a member of Coeliac UK didn't know about this survey. It explains a lot. Our local Sainsbury's store - one of the smaller ones, admittedly - hasn't been able to obtain the bread I eat at times, and now it seems to have done away with gluten free frozen fries, or chips as we call...- 9 comments

Gluten-Free Shoppers Report Food Scarcity and Soaring Prices
cristiana commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Additional Concerns
Lisa, I'm so sorry to hear this. It has been a very difficult at times trying to get basics. I was told gluten free food was being bought by people without gluten related issues, as an alternative to normal pasta etc, when it ran out. I wish something could be done about this.- 9 comments

Is Worcestershire Sauce Gluten-Free?
cristiana commented on Scott Adams's article in Additional Concerns
For UK readers: If in any doubt, I would recommend buying Henderson's Relish, made in Yorkshire, instead. A good substitute. It is actually labelled Gluten Free because it is made with spirit vinegar. It can be bought from Waitrose and Morrisons, amongst other places. In Britain, Lea & Perrins' contains malt vinegar made from barley. This...- 2 comments

That's very wise, its not usually an issue with B12 but iron can be very dangerous. Yes, I need to eat more greens too - thank you for the reminder! I get gastritis when I am glutened (burning stomach pain) and it was also a particular issue when I was first diagnosed, when my coeliac disease pain was at its worse. I find that sometimes, a day or two...

Hi pabolden Welcome to the forum! That certainly sounds like a challenge! As you say, it might be time to start home baking - if that is the case, it would probably be worth investing in a break making machine, which I gather are very good. Before anyone answers, can you tell us where in the world you live as what is on offer will vary. ...

Hello Agrripina I totally sympathise with your anxiety issues. I posted something about anxiety on another thread the other day - I hope it might help (see below). Your vitamin and mineral levels may be low now which can really affect your mood - can you get these checked, particularly B12 and iron? If they are low, or even low normal, you can start...

I agree. I no longer work in catering (I gave up years before I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, it's not related) but when I did I was about twenty kilos lighter. It was in a really busy hotel and there was no time to sit around and eat baked goods (more's the pity!). The two female pastry chefs employed at my first hotel job were both skinny...

Celiac and Mental Health Issues?
cristiana replied to AlwaysLearning's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I developed, in the space of a few weeks, the most crippling anxiety, disturbing thoughts and phobias in the run up to my diagnosis. I remember trying to fold my children's laundry one afternoon and found it almost impossible. I went to see a doctor who ran some tests and saw I was very anemic. Thankfully she didn't just prescribe me anxiety medication... -
Hello LiJ I'm so glad that I have been of some help. I'm hoping some of my fellow board members will also chime in with some of their own insights and experiences, but certainly, from a British point of view, there seems to be a scope for a career as a gluten-free pastry chef. This is a growing sector. Out of interest, in Malaysia and Japan, are...

Hi LiJ Welcome to the forum! I am not sure where you live but here in the UK, gluten-free baked products are very much in demand. According to the Guardian newspaper, 1 in 10 customers are now avoiding gluten - that's a lot of people buying gluten-free, whether they are gluten intolerant, have coeliac disease or are avoiding it for some other reason...

The really memorable one was Trimethoprin which I took for a UTI. My stomach burned so badly, and I got heartburn. It was so bad I reported it through the Yellow Card system in the UK. The only way I could finish the course was to take Nexium, under medical supervision, and even then I still had symptoms, just not so bad. I think I was unfortunate...

I think it's really interesting that your gastritis symptoms occurred after the gluten challenge. Glutening causes the most awful burning sensation in my stomach that can last for some time. I don't drink alcohol as it has always tasted like medicine to me but the one time I did when I had gastritis the pain was unbearable. And like your brother, I also...

Hello Elkwestern Welcome to the forum. Do you know if the person who conducted the endoscopy actually took biopsies of your gut? The reason I ask is that I got the results of my first endoscopy in installments - if your experience mirrors mine, it could be they haven't analyzed the biopsies yet. In my own case I had very strong TTG readings which...

Hi Thomasm5 Definitely worth taking up Trent's advice. However, I would say if your diet and exposure to sunlight has changed, that would probably also make a difference. I don't know where you are posting from but coeliacs in the UK, where I live, can see a nutritionist through the National Health Service who give free dietary advice. ...

Hello Thomasm5 and welcome to the forum Aside going gluten free, has your diet changed in other ways? If you are eating more vegetables and less meat, for example, that could account for there being less vitamin B12 in your diet. Also, prior to your diagnosis, were you consuming bread and cereals made with fortified wheat flour? In the UK, calcium...

I know someone who was sectioned and the hospital didn't cater for coeliacs. Friends and family had to send in food (at least they were able to, unlike in the situation above). This article makes me wonder just how many elderly and vulnerable people are in similar situations but for the long term in care homes etc?

Yes, you are right, Scott - the dish you speak of is Chicken Tikka Masala and I read that one in seven curries sold is a Chicken Tikka Masala! It's my favourite by far! In fact, I ate one last night! But don't talk to me about the small warning! That's one of my bugbears with food labelling in the UK - too small to read, or, listing a "may also contain...

I put a sad face above there as I haven't been able to eat a curry from any of those places since I was diagnosed coeliac. The Indian ones in the UK supermarkets are generally gluten-free, none of the rest are... I miss Chinese curries in particular. I guess I could try to cook my own from scratch though!👩🍳

Hello Diamonds Welcome to the forum. I am so sorry to read that you are struggling. Can you tell us a bit more about your story - how long ago you were diagnosed, and what sort of support you have had in the past from the medical profession, friends and family in your coeliac journey? Some find it easier than others to stick to the diet...

Dealing with gas an stomach pain.
cristiana replied to Carol1066's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Carol You can search through this forum and you will find quite a lot of advice on how to deal with gastritis and/or reflux through diet and may help your symptoms of bloating, if these conditions are causing it. There is a thread I started on slippery elm which might help. https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/118711-gastritis-or-glutening-slippery... -
It can certainly take a while to recover from glutening, but I have taken a couple of weeks in the past to get over an upset stomach caused by drinking a very large iced drink in Spain which we call slushies here in the UK, not sure what they are called in the States. I expect there was something dodgy in the water. I couldn't get rid of it, until one day...
