Hi Clemmie I second what Scott says about oats - you will have to eat what is known as "pure oats" to be sure they are gluten free. And even then, you may be one of the celiac community (I am one of them) who reacts to even pure oats. Reason being, there may be weeds from glutinous crops in amongst the oat crop, or the oats can get contaminated...

Positive DH Biopsy-Desperate New Mother
cristiana replied to RebeccaLMoyer's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Hi Rebecca Similarly, I don't have DH but I do now have adult onset eczema so I know how difficult living with extremely irritated skin can be. I know that there are a few DH sufferers who contribute to this forum and I hope someone will be in touch soon. Just a suggestion - I could be entirely wrong so I'm hoping others will tell me off straight... -
Hi Clemmie and welcome! About six weeks of two slices of normal bread per day is roughly the standard amount of gluten recommended before a blood test in the UK, which is where I live. When you say low gluten, would it be as much as that, or somewhat less? Cristiana

You are very welcome, Layla. One more thought... once you know where you are with gluten there may be one other thing worth considering, if you find you are still reacting to a lot of seemingly random things. A friend of mine was reacting to so many different foods she went for skin patch allergy testing, some private doctor in Surrey, and he identified...

Re: Crumpets. Oddly enough I actually prefer gluten-free crumpets, I find the normal variety have a very slight bitter taste to them, so "I'm awright Jack" on that one. The thing I do miss however is doughnuts. And, oddly, now when my family suggest a fast food meal I wish I could join them even though in the past I really didn't care for Macdonalds or...

Hiya Layla I totally agree with Trents. Let us know how you get on. If the test does come back strongly indicative of coeliac disease talk to your GP about whether you actually need to have the endoscopy. An endoscopy was always viewed as the gold standard way of diagnosing coeliac disease in adults in this country (I too am in the UK), but...

Hello again FlyingWotsitThingy First things first. I'm British, and Wotsits are cheese puff Cheeto type crisps here and I have to say that reading your name makes me smile each time I see it, with the thought of a Wotsit flying through the air! Thank you for cheering me up! But that aside... Here in the UK I know a fair few coeliacs but...

Hello FlyingWotsitThingy! Welcome to the forum. I cannot pretend to know anything about those DNA results - it looks incredibly complicated, so I can understand why you are struggling. I am sure someone on this forum will be able to help but out of interest, is it possible to contact the laboratories who conducted the tests for help. Also...

I see... yes, that's right, government provided. I must admit I was handed a leaflet about prescriptions upon diagnosis and found the whole thing very confusing, so I'm just hoping I've got my facts straight. I'd be interested to know how many coeliacs in the UK actually use the prescription service, out of my own circle I'd say about 50 per cent of my...

It is nothing to do with private health insurance, it is available via the National Health Service. So if you are ordinarily resident in the UK, you are entitled to use the NHS which is state health care - GPs, hospitals etc etc. Usually this is free treatment, or subsidized care (as in the case of dentists). Prescriptions carry charges, apart from the...

Trents... just saw the second part of your question. It's a bit complicated so I'll post this link from Coeliac UK. https://www.coeliac.org.uk/information-and-support/coeliac-disease/once-diagnosed/prescriptions/?&&type=rfst&set=true#cookie-widget

Hi trents Great question... You can buy gluten free food/ingredients without a prescription. Unfortunately often the prices are substantially greater than gluten containing equivalents. For example, my favourite brand of gluten-free bread is made by Genius and you are looking at £2.50 for a sliced white gluten-free loaf. Compare that with ...

Hi Richard I think that because you have been on omeprazole for a while it would be a really good idea to rule out coeliac disease. Here in the UK I have a couple of friends with gastric issues and coeliac wasn't even looked into initially - it took some time before they were offered endoscopies. I know of one person who I believe just had their stomach...

Which Brands of Eye Drops are Gluten-Free?

That's a really interesting point - in fact, perhaps that's why when I supress tears, my nose gets blocked!- 10 comments

Hi Carolynh I find my gastritis and reflux are tied to each other - sometimes I'm first aware of the reflux symptoms, other times I'm first aware of gastritis pain, then the irritated throat etc follows. But I tend to now treat them the same, and I try to get in quickly with the cure that works for me, which took a while to figure out. This includes...

Hi Caorlynh I do sympathise, I have had lots of issues with gastritis and reflux in recent years. I found the reflux diet also led me to lose weight, having put a lot back on after being diagnosed a coeliac. A few things that help me are drinking camomile tea or warm water; not eating for three hours before I go to bed, taking some gaviscon before...

cristiana replied to emma6's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Lama It has been a while, but I hope you might hear from Emma, or perhaps someone else with a similar problem. If not, it may be worth starting up a new thread. I hope someone can be of help. Cristiana -
Hi Mark, Just chiming in again... I forgot to say that since my diagnosis, so not sure if it is related to coeliac or not, I occasionally get an itching sensation deep in my throat, sometimes it feels as if it is in my chest. It also triggers mild wheezing. When it first started, a few months before Covid broke out in the autumn of 2019, I got...

Hi again Mark Nice to have another British person on board! Although I am sorry you are having these issues, obviously! Certainly, it is much easier to be a coeliac today, even compared with ten years ago, as there are some fabulous gluten-free products these days. Coeliac disease doesn't always show in blood tests, so if your doctor still...
-
And a PS, I ought to have said, Mark - a lot of symptoms that coeliacs experience are due to vitamin and mineral deficiencies caused by years of malabsorption. You may find that this is at the route of some of your problems. Have you been tested for ferritin, B12 and vitamin D deficiencies? These tend to be the tests offered under the NHS.
-
Hello Mark and welcome to the forum Firstly, from your spelling of coeliac, do I take it you are messaging us from the UK? If so, I should say I am a British moderator on this forum and so am familiar with the pathway to diagnosis here in the UK. Did your GP say to you that you must be eating gluten before any blood tests are taken? This will...
-
That's a great tip about the tumeric. I had no idea. I ate some crisps with it today - not the healthiest way to consume it, though, methinks! Alan, have you had your B12 and ferritin levels checked? Low levels (or even low normal levels) give me brain fog. When this happens I buy some excellent B12 sublingual supplements from Holland...

Wise words from Scott there. I'd also say do join Coeliac UK, if you are writing from the UK, if you haven't already. I'm pretty sure they support people with Non Celiac Gluten Intolerance, too. My local group actually organises meals out at safe venues. I have actually never gone myself yet but that's due to poor organisation on my part, more...

Yes, me too. The dizziness is something that still comes back when I get gluten in my system.
