Gluten free
knitty kitty replied to Clara Douglas's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Clara, You said you require an EPI pen. That sounds like a wheat allergy. Do you have an immediate allergic reaction to wheat with swelling of face and throat? You need to contact your doctor for clarification. There's a big difference between wheat allergy and Celiac Disease. Wheat allergy is immediate. Facial swelling and throat swelling... -

Sophie, I noticed you didn't mention your doctors testing for Vitamin D deficiency. I think this would be an important test to have done. There's several Naional Institute of Health studies done that show a connection between Vitamin D deficiency and ANA antibodies.... "Vitamin D deficiency is associated with an increased autoimmune response... -
Good to know, Cycling Lady! I believe what I had was due to thiamine deficiency (and probably increasing deficiencies in other vitamins needed to make red blood cells like pyridoxine (B6), niacin (B3), folate(B9), cobalamine (B12) and riboflavin (B2) deficiencies as well.) Iron deficiency can cause microcytic (small sized) red blood cells, but...

Beverage, I had donated blood during the time I was suffering from progressively worsening thiamine and other vitamin deficiencies caused by undiagnosed Celiac Disease. The nurse that checked my blood before the donation remarked that it looked like I had thalassemia (small immature red blood cells). She allowed me to donate blood anyway. Afterwards...

I'm doing a happy cat dance! I'm so thankful that my experience with thiamine (Vitamin B1) can be useful to others! Here's the form of Vitamin B1 Thiamine...

Bouchra, You sound like you have nutritional deficiencies! Celiac Disease damages the intestines and causes malabsorption. You haven't been absorbing enough vitamins and minerals on the gluten free diet. The gluten free diet can be deficient in some vitamins and minerals. Sometimes you have to take vitamins and mineral supplements. Gluten containing...

bigmouthaj, Having "gluten sensitivity" is comparable to "being a little bit pregnant." If you keep ingesting gluten, your problems are going to get bigger. Your "gluten sensitivity" causes malabsorption of vitamins and minerals. You need to be checked for vitamin and mineral deficiencies as part of proper follow up care. Deficiency in Riboflavin...

Fasteddy, I'd like to try your soap recipe! Please attach a link in this thread when you post it. I read your post here about your struggle to get a Celiac diagnosis by blood tests..... People with Dermatitis Herpetiformis don't test on Celiac blood test panels the same as Celiacs without DH. Celiacs with DH don't have positive blood...

This sounds like gastrointestinal beriberi to me. I am not a doctor. I experienced this myself. I had the same symptoms. Thiamine deficiency causes gastrointestinal beriberi. I apologize for disagreeing with you yet again, Cycling Lady. According to this latest research, some Type Two Diabetes is on the Autoimmune spectrum. Already having one autoimmune disease like Celiac Disease increases the autoimmune component of Type Two Diabetes. "Type 2 Diabetes: How Much of an Autoimmune Disease?" https://www.ncbi.nlm...

TheDHhurts, Made a typo. Sorry. Himalayan salt does NOT have iodine. I've found iodine to be problematic even when not glutened. For example, I loved sushi, but found the iodine in the nori (seaweed) to be a problem even if I made fish free, gluten free veggie sushi at home while being gluten free. Oh, and watch out for medications...

how low is 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten ???
knitty kitty replied to DJFL77I's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The muscle aches and fatigue may be due to thiamine deficiency. We need thiamine to turn foods into energy. Without enough thiamine, symptoms of fatigue and muscle aches are common. Thiamine needs magnesium to work properly. Magnesium deficiency can cause fatigue and muscle cramps. Checking for nutritional deficiencies is part of follow up... -
TheDHhurts, I have DH. I found avoiding iodine and taking extra niacin helps. I had to stop fish oil for omega-3's. Fish oil may contain various levels of iodine. Cod liver oil contains high levels of iodine. You can Google "low iodine diet" for more information, but.... Potatoes have high levels of iodine. Some teas have iodine...

Solanine and Nickel was brought up in another post. I thought a continuation of the discussion in its own thread would be beneficial. Solanine is a glycoalkaloid present in nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and peppers). "Naturally occurring glycoalkaloids in potatoes aggravate intestinal inflammation in two mouse models of inflammatory...

I think starting a new thread on solanine and nickel is warranted.

While some Celiacs also develop sensitivity towards corn and rice, I believe that microbial transglutaminase (a.k.a. meat glue) causes reactions to certified gluten free foods. Microbial transglutaminase is used widely in the food industry to improve flavor and texture and prolong shelf life in gluten free foods as well as nongluten free foods. Because...

Mandeep, Trents is correct that Type One diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system erroneously attacks itself and can cause damage to the cells of the pancreas so that not enough insulin can be produced to keep a person alive. The person in the previous post whose father had diabetes had incorrectly identified his diabetes as...

Further information..... Your body uses vitamins and minerals inside the tissues of your muscles and organs. Your body will rob the tissues of their vitamin supply in order to put it in the blood stream and send it to the brain to keep your brain working. Blood tests are not a good measurement of the vitamin status within the tissues. The limits...

Intestinal Growling?
knitty kitty replied to klcarne30's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
klcarne30, Those rumbly tummy noises are called borborygmi. I had them, too. They're very embarrassing, I agree. Have you been checked for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3099351/ The Autoimmune Paleo Protocol diet helps starves out the bacteria which have grown up into your...
