  1. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2738337/ This article examines how vitamin deficiencies contribute to one's mental health. Celiac Disease causes malabsorption which results in malnutrition. Even if you don't have horrible gastrointestinal problems, you can still be deficient in vitamins and minerals. Some chemical messengers...
  2. Here's a previous thread discussing hemochromatosis which may be connected to Celiac Disease. In hemochromatosis, the body stores too much iron in the liver and other organs. B12 and folate can become deficient because they are integral in red blood cell production. Symptoms of hemochromatosis don't usually appear until middle age. https...
  3. Hi. I have type two diabetes. Also, I am allergic to anything containing sulfur, like sulfonylureas, antidiabetic drugs containing sulfur. I had dreadful diarrhea on Metformin. So I had to find a way to keep my blood glucose levels within range without drugs. I came across this book by Dr. Sandra Cabot, "Diabetes Type Two - You can reverse it naturally...
  4. Hello. Here's a study that found vitamin B12 and folate supplements can help. Vitamins D, C, and E are supposed to help, too. (I prefer the methyl forms of B12 and Folate.) It's possible the bad soy episode resulted in a period of poor absorption. But even on a gluten free diet, some Celiacs develop vitamin deficiencies. Hope this helps.
  5. So sorry to hear you're having such problems. My heart goes out to you. I remember what it was like trying to sort things out. I had a horrible time before I figured out the connection. I felt like I belonged to the "disease of the month" club. The best advice I can give is to correct nutritional deficiencies. Your car won't run properly if you don't...
  6. Victoria, Are you lactose intolerant? Levothyroxine contains lactose. Celiacs often develop a lactose intolerance because of damage to the tips of villi, the area that produces lactase, the enzyme that breaks down lactose. Without the enzyme to break it down, lactose is fermented in the intestines, causing diarrhea. The fruit salad may have exacerbated...
  7. Here's one of my favorite articles on gluten's effects on the brain: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4809873/#!po=18.2432 Do start a new topic if you would like to further discuss this. Kitty
  8. I take at least 5000 IUs a day. If I get a cold or glutened, I take double. No, it won't hurt to take that much, but I'm not a doctor, I just researched a great deal. After finding me deficient, my doctor prescribed D2, the synthetic form of vitamin D, but I just didn't like it. So, after some researching, I learned D3, cholecalciferol, is the natural...
  9. Yes, supplementing really helped my body get back to "normal" functioning... I had been terribly nutrient deficient prior to Celiac diagnosis, and the doctors just kept throwing more and more medicine at me to alleviate the deficiency symptoms and cascade of deficiency related health problems, but didn't try to discover the cause or the reason my body was...
  10. Correcting vitamin and mineral deficiencies can be helpful in reducing high cholesterol. Vitamin B12 is needed for the body to utilize the cholesterol. Without sufficient B12 to break it down, the cholesterol accumulates. Pyroxidine, folate and inositol are other B vitamins that help reduce cholesterol. Low vitamin D is associated with high...
  11. Here's an interesting article about vitamin deficiencies and hair loss. https://healdove.com/disease-illness/16-Vitamin-Deficiencies-that-Lead-to-Hair-Loss Ennis is right, you may need to take vitamins and minerals in liquid form for better absorption. And you may need to take more than just the RDA if you're deficient. My hair falls out...
  12. Sorry your dad is so sick. My heart goes out to you both. I believe the problem is malnutrition. Sometimes Celiacs have trouble absorbing all the nutrients that they need from a gluten free diet. As people age, intestinal absorption decreases, too. B12 deficiency will cause low blood pressure and headaches. Vitamin D deficiency is linked to...
  13. "I was experiencing a lot of chest pains and heart palpitations. I read up more on vitamin D3. I found out that those are symptoms of too much D3. I was doing 5,000 IU since my diagnosis back in October 2016. I stopped taking that about two weeks ago and those symptoms cleared up." Were you taking Calcium supplements while taking Vitamin D? Calcium...
  14. Hi. Back pain is often associated with low vitamin D levels. And crampy, tight muscles are associated with deficiencies in calcium and magnesium. Vitamin K and B12 are needed for strong bone building. All of these vitamins and minerals are often deficient in Celiacs because of malabsorption of nutrients. Hope these articles can help. https:...
  15. Has any one has tried the probiotic mentioned in this article? https://www.celiac.com/articles/24595/1/Bifidobacterium-infantis-NLS-Super-Strain-Reduces-a-Defensin-5-in-Active-Celiac-Disease-Patients/Page1.html Natron Life Start is available on Amazon.com. I am dissatisfied with my current probiotic. I suspect it may be one of those that...
  16. I believe Cycling Lady has hit the bull's eye. Hypoparathyroidism can be caused by excessive caffeine consumption. That Zip Fizz contains Guarana. Guarana contains high levels of caffeine. Plus you're drinking coffee again. High doses of caffeine cause the parathyroid to secrete less of its hormone. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC...
  17. It might be Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. MCAS is when your defensive cells go overboard and react to every little thing. I react to many medications because of MCAS. https://www.jillcarnahan.com/2016/10/31/mast-cell-activation-syndrome-mcas-when-histamine-goes-haywire/ And it might be vitamin deficiencies. Low vitamin D can cause anxiety, as...
  18. Demylination diseases and Reynaud's syndrome are often related to low vitamin D, low omega 3 and omega 6 fats, and B12 deficiency. Celiacs often have problems absorbing healthy fats and fatty vitamins, and often have low B12. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3896619/ The section called "Demyelination/remyelination and nutrients"...
  19. Has your daughter been checked for vitamin and mineral deficiencies? Celiac Disease causes malabsorption which results in malnutrition. Celiac Disease damages the intestines so that essential nutrients aren't absorbed. Hot flashes and night sweats may be caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. Slow growth, amenorrhea (no period) and constipation can...
  20. Jm34, How are you? We have been concerned about you and your progress. Has your health improved? Did you and your doctors discover what was wrong? We would love to hear from you. Hope you are feeling much better. Best regards, Knitty Kitty
  21. I think maybe this one is who you were thinking of. You may be right about the histamine issues.
  22. I disagree. Vitamin D supplements do not cause kidney stones. Look here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23739765 "Short-term nutritional vitamin D repletion in stone formers with vitamin D deficiency also does not appear to increase urinary calcium excretion." In plain English, taking vitamin D when it is low does not increase the calcium...
  23. Celiac Disease causes malabsorption which results in malnutrition. Has your doctor checked you for vitamin and mineral deficiencies? Many Celiacs develop deficiencies in Vitamin D and the B vitamins, calcium, magnesium and zinc. Even on a gluten free diet, vitamin deficiencies can occur. Trying the low histamine diet may help,...
  24. Here's an article that might help explain the connection between wheat and anxiety. http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fnhum.2016.00130/full Hope this helps.
