Biopsy negative
knitty kitty replied to Hatbox121's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Did you get any of your vitamin and mineral levels checked for deficiencies? You don't have to be Celiac to develop deficiencies. Peripheral neuropathy may be caused by deficiencies of B12, copper, vitamin E, B6, B1 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4208100/ Not dreaming can be caused by B6 deficiency. https://www.ncbi.nlm... -
Hi there! I follow a low histamine diet that Cycling Lady brought to my attention a long time ago. Citrus fruits and their juices are histamine releasing foods. High histamine levels can cause hives just like in an allergic reaction. Here's a helpful site: https://www.histamineintolerance.org.uk/about/the-food-diary/the-food-list/ I...

Yup, short pinkies here. Anyone have a tall forehead? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23325442 Leonardo da Vinci meets celiac disease. "Adults, but not children, with celiac disease show a forehead extension significantly greater than controls, but this test's specificity appears too low to be used in the screening of celiac disease...

Numbness
knitty kitty replied to Feesa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Found this article about hypocalcaemia (low calcium levels) causing numbness and tingling in the shoulders. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27753627 Might be worthwhile to get vitamin and mineral levels checked by a physician. Hope this helps. -
Hi, again. My dry eyes have improved since I got my vitamin D level up in the 80's. Here's a recent study showing vitamin D deficiency is linked to dry eyes. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28487505 And another study found vitamin deficiencies in people on a gluten free diet for many years. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12144...

Hi, Cristiana, Sorry, I don't remember exactly how long I was taking the PPI, omeprazole. I believe it was less than a month. It just made things worse. I wouldn't recommend it. I'm not a doctor and everybody is different, so you'll have to decide what is right for you. What I did do was to go on a low histamine diet. I found these sites very...

Hi. Hope you're feeling better. When I had Gerd, I found it helpful to lay on my left side after eating. Laying on the left side straightens out the esophagus and the stomach, allowing for burps to escape more easily. Eating smaller, more frequent, bland meals helps, too. Icelandgirl's crock pot chicken suggestion is a good one. Throw in...

Allergic to olives?!? Oh, that's too bad. I can't eat olives because they add Sulfites in the brining process, but the oil is okay. I'm leary of anything with processed coconut meat because sulfites are added to keep it white. So I am highly suspicious of coconut oil and coconut milk, too. Thanks for the tip on Natural Vitality. I'll check...

I use extra virgin olive oil. It's got lots of omega 3 fatty acids. Sunflower seed oil has more omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids. The brain likes omega 3's and the body can make omega 6 and 9 out of omega 3 like snapping legos together. I tried almond milk a while back and it didn't agree with me. It was during one of those "find the funky food...

Hi, Ennis. Sorry the sunflower seeds made you sick. I can't tolerate them either. I think you're right that they may be too oily for some of us, though I wonder about the combination with psyllium husks.... the psyllium husks would want to absorb water and the sunflower seeds would want to repel water since they are oily.... just wondering if that combination...

Hi. Short, your medical history has similarities to mine. I was severely deficient in Vitamin D and had diarrhea for a long time. When there is prolonged diarrhea, there is malnutrition. Once I started on Vitamin D supplements, I started to feel so much better. Actually, for a while, I ate them like candy, I craved them. It was very strange, but...

Gluten-Free one month - Skin Issues
knitty kitty replied to OZDiver's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi! Skin problems often are related to vitamin deficiencies. http://www.podiatrytoday.com/when-vitamin-and-nutritional-deficiencies-cause-skin-and-nail-changes I found this article helpful. Pellagra is a deficiency in niacin. One symptom is a rash when exposed to sunlight. You might be nutrient deficient. A good B complex vitamin may... -
I was so curious about this! I found a study about polycythemia being related to vitamin B 12 deficiency! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22424943 And then another: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25730455 Even though the usual blood tests found "normal" B 12, the people in these studies still had a B 12 deficiency as measured...

Birthday Party CC
knitty kitty replied to mama.liz07's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I thought that a doctor's mask or disposable filter mask might prevent your son putting his hands in his mouth while playing. Get him some little scrubs, and he can pretend to be a doctor. Another idea is to dress him as a cowboy with a ten gallon hat and bandana over his mouth. Kids like to dress up. Wearing a costume might take attention away from... -
Here's another article on vitamin deficiencies that occur in a similar malabsorption disease. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28216963

Christiana, Low ferritin (iron) is often accompanied by low vitamin B 12, folate (another B vitamin), vitamin C, calcium, and vitamin D. These vitamins and minerals all work together. The B vitamins are water soluble and need to be replenished every day. Malabsorption from Celiac disease can make getting enough nutrients difficult without supplementation...
-
heatman, the symptoms you described may be due to vitamin deficiencies... Celiac Disease causes malabsorption which results in malnutrition. Even on a gluten free diet malnutrition may occur. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12144584 Deficiencies of the B vitamins can manifest as skin problems, intestinal upsets, and headaches...

10 year old celiac and irrational, awful tantrums
knitty kitty replied to Ari's mom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hello. I was wondering what flavor the potato chips were. Some flavors have dairy in them, like sour cream and onion, or ranch, or cheese. Sometimes people with Celiac Disease develop an intolerance, or even an allergy, to dairy which can affect behavior, too. Some chips have flavor enhancers akin to MSG that might trigger a reaction. Potato... -
Mushrooms hit and miss
knitty kitty replied to Ennis-TX's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ennis, Sorry you're not feeling well. I've had the same experience with mushrooms, mostly they're okay, but occasionally not. Yes, the sliced ones have a higher risk for contamination (found out the hard way), but I'm frugal, too, and bought them on sale. Shiitake mushrooms are grown on logs. Haven't been glutened by a shiitake yet. : ) The... -
Vitamin D deficiency is connected to sleep apnea. Vitamin D deficiency is common with Celiac Disease. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26414899 Hope this helps!

Swollen ankles and feet
knitty kitty replied to jantwins's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello! Celiac Disease causes malabsorption of nutrients and vitamins. While you're healing, you may not be able to absorb all you need, and supplementing may be necessary. Vitamin D and the B complex vitamins are often low in newly diagnosed people. Here's an interesting article on how low vitamin levels may be contributing to the edema. http:... -
AristotlesCat, You said you tested positive for antibodies. Were the tests specific for gliadin antibodies? Or just antibodies of inflammation in general? Coffee contains polyphenols. The amount of polyphenols can vary with the roasting time of the coffee beans. Perhaps the coffee you've switched to contains more polyphenols. Polyphenols...

GeorgeW, Hi. I'm sorry you're feeling ill and are frustrated finding answers. I understand. I spend a bit of time researching how Celiac Disease and the resulting malnutrition can affect us. I'm not a doctor. I'm a microbiologist. You said you were very careful with your gluten free diet, so I believe you weren't glutenized. However, vitamin...

Horrible Pressure Headaches After Eating
knitty kitty replied to lemonade's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Anil, I'm so glad you are feeling better! The article suggests 600mg of magnesium (too much magnesium will cause diarrhea), 400mg of riboflavin (too much will cause tingling or flushing), and 500mg of omega 3. I took my supplements in divided doses with each meal. I also take a B-Complex vitamin that has 50mg of all the B vitamins and 400mg... -
Horrible Pressure Headaches After Eating
knitty kitty replied to lemonade's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Anil, I understand how uncomfortable migraines can be. I've suffered from them for many years, too. I found several scientific studies that suggest that Riboflavin (vitamin B 2), omega 3 fatty acids, and magnesium may help. My migraines began to decrease in intensity and frequency after taking these supplements. This article explains...
