  1. @Wheatwacked is right. "Vitamin D is responsible for the barrier function of the intestinal epithelium and for the modulation of the bowel immune system, hence, low levels may be associated with greater gut permeability and, consequently, with GutMicrobiota-induced metabolic endotoxemia that induces a low-grade inflammation." Vitamin D : Nutrient...
  2. @hmcdowell, Since the blood tests point to Celiac Disease, continuing with a diet that contains gluten and having the endoscopy would be the preferred way to proceed. At least you will have a base line for comparison with future endoscopies should that be necessary. Stopping gluten now would lead to unclear endoscopy results, leaving you...
  3. I take Magnesium Glycinate supplements after meals. Magnesium coats the stomach and small intestines. Same with Calcium supplements. Tums has Calcium carbonate. Rollaids has Calcium carbonate and Magnesium. Calcium carbonate can cause constipation. @Wheatwacked is correct about marketing ploys. Just take plain Magnesium Glycinate.
  4. Hi, all! Thought you would be interested in this article about the connection between NAFLD and high fructose corn syrup. I gave up high fructose corn syrup in gluten free facsimile products and soda pop and my NAFLD cleared up. Amazed my doctors, though they had no explanation for it. 😸 How high fructose intake may trigger fatty liver di...
  5. @Gilly M, Hello! I am happy to hear you are making progress! I apologize for not responding sooner. I was unavoidably detained. The Universe threw me a curve ball. LoL Let's get to your questions... Here are my questions to you if you are able to answer any/some/all... 1) I am only taking 50mg x 2 thaimine HCl right now. When...
  6. @Aussienae, You're being brave to give up dairy! I understand how difficult it is to make changes. But the rewards on the other side of healing are very worthwhile! Keep us posted on your progress! Best wishes!
  7. Definitely discontinue dairy! Some people go beyond molecular mimicry (the body mistaking casein as gluten) and develop an allergy to casein which can cause a whole ballpark full of other problems like eczema, asthma, and anaphylaxis. The AIP diet eliminates for a while the foods most likely to irritate and to cause inflammation. During that...
  8. @Aussienae, Do you include dairy in your diet? Lactose intolerance can be a problem, but casein, the protein in dairy, can cause the same autoimmune reaction as gluten because a segment of the casein protein resembles a segment of gluten protein.
  9. Blood tests are not accurate for the B vitamins. Blood tests can reflect how much was in your diet the last couple of days, but they don't measure the amount of vitamins stored inside cells or how well the body is metabolizing the vitamins. Since the eight essential B vitamins are water soluble, you might want to try supplementing them in a B Complex...
  10. Have you been checked for vitamin and mineral deficiencies? B12 Cobalamine, iron, Thiamine, zinc and other nutrients are frequently deficient or low in the newly diagnosed. If our bodies don't get enough of the vitamins and minerals it needs, our bodies don't function properly. Discuss with your doctor the benefits of supplementing while...
  11. Hope this helps!
  12. @Maxipoo, Getting checked for vitamin and mineral deficiencies is part of proper follow up care for Celiac people. It's common to have more than one deficiency in Celiac Disease. Unfortunately, medical professionals are not given much training in nutritional deficiency symptoms. Vitamin deficiencies need to be corrected quickly so that the damage...
  13. Have you eliminated dairy products from your diet? Do you eat lots of spinach? Peanuts? Soy? These are foods high in oxalates, which form kidney stones. Passing a kidney stone can cause pain in the lower abdomen, back, and groin. Here's an article with more information... https://www.iowaclinic.com/urology/early-signs-kidney-stones...
  14. I believe you that you're gluten free. But, what are you eating? Do you eat nuts? Legumes (aka beans)? Citrus fruit? Snails? Processed gluten free facsimile foods? Lollipops? Daisies? 😸
  15. What symptoms are you having? What do you include in your diet? Do you keep a food journal?
  16. @Emanon, How long have you been eating less than 400 calories? You may be suffering from malnutrition. You may be having a bad reaction to foods because you are so deficient in vitamins that your body can't process it. I'm familiar with your description of your brain function. I felt that way when I was not absorbing sufficient nutrients...
  17. Yes, that's the way to go! I make most of my food with very little processed foods. I limit my amount of carbohydrates (sugar and potatoes) because I have Type Two Diabetes. Yes, there is lots to learn! Asking questions is a good way to learn. How are you feeling? The B Complex vitamins should make the tingling in your fingers...
  18. It's nutritional deficiencies in Calcium and Vitamin D. Calcium can be reabsorbed from teeth as well as bones. As we age, we can have difficulty absorbing certain minerals like calcium from our foods. Excluding dairy, a great source of calcium, makes getting sufficient calcium from foods more difficult. Leafy green vegetables like kale...
  19. @Russ H, Some plain old horse sense would work wonders, too. Be aware of your heritage. My surname is a clue that I'm from Northern European descent which is one of the groups with the highest rate of Celiac Disease. I have an article for you on the search for better diagnostic testing... Evaluating Responses to Gluten...
  20. So is ten or more years of being misdiagnosed... loss of health, loss of quality of life, loss of employment.... ....while the doctors are enjoying their yachts.... Celiac disease isn't a disease of the past. May is Celiac Disease Awareness month!
  21. @LP023, Since Celiac Disease is genetic, a lot of the misdiagnosis runaround could be cut out if a DNA screening for Celiac genes is done early on in symptomatic people with family history of digestive problems or other health issues consistent with untreated Celiac Disease. While not all Celiac genes are known, and having the genes doesn't mean...
  22. @Nita hearn, Hello! Welcome to the forum! Age doesn't matter here. Since you've been recently diagnosed, you're a youngster. Talk with your doctor about supplementing with extra B Complex vitamins along with a multivitamin. In correcting vitamin insufficiency, we need more than the daily requirements because we have to replenish the depleted...
  23. @CareyOsborne, Do you have a Carbon Monoxide detector in your home? Carbon Monoxide poisoning can cause similar symptoms as Gluten Ataxia. A slow Carbon Monoxide leak can build up so subtly you don't notice the tell-tale rotten egg smell put in for safety. Try opening some windows or get outside and see if you feel better.
  24. I think consistency is important. If you are going to take B Complex vitamins and Benfotiamine, take them every day. There is what is called the thiamine paradox, where you if you start to feel worse or like you have the flu, cut back on the amount of Thiamine or Benfotiamine. If fatigue returns, increase your thiamine slowly. Take B...
  25. Hello, @Emma84, One statement you made on another thread... "I’ve been gluten free for 2 years, then ate for 5 weeks prior to bloodwork and it will be 6 weeks for endoscopy. Should that be accurate?" During a Gluten Challenge recommendations vary about the amount of gluten to consume... from 3-10 gm of gluten a day, (equivalent to approximately 4...
