More info about Vitamin Deficiencies
knitty kitty commented on knitty kitty's blog entry in Thiamine Thiamine Thiamine
@Evan0529, I'm doing great now. Thanks for asking. I have taken a B 100 Complex. There's different brands and prices, so pick one that fits you. Make sure the vitamins are free from gluten. I have taken the eight B vitamins individually. It's just really what fits in with you. I personally don't like multivitamins because they... -
@AnyBunny94, Hello. Yes, it is difficult to make that mental adjustment to eating gluten free, as @itarachiu said. Keep in mind that gluten containing products are enriched with vitamins and minerals. Our bodies can crave foods for those vitamins and minerals. Most gluten free facsimile foods are not enriched with vitamins and minerals. ...

Feels like I can’t eat anything
knitty kitty replied to SargeMaximus's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
@SargeMaximus, I hope you read this article. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8533683/ It explains how eating a diet with lots of carbohydrates requires more thiamine than is being consumed. Thiamine is needed to turn carbohydrates into energy. Without sufficient thiamine, our bodies burn fat and muscle for fuel for energy... -
@Onemoreceliac, Was the genetic panel testing only for the presence of DQ 2 and/or DQ8 genes? Some genetic tests look for the presence or absence of these, the most common Celiac genes. But, there are other less common DQ genes that code for Celiac. You may want to have another genetic test to look for any of the variations for Celiac. The...

Advice please
knitty kitty replied to Dawn s D's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
@Dawn s D I agree with @Maddie6332. I believe you will feel much better once you go gluten free. I followed the Autoimmune Protocol Diet which has been scientifically shown to help reduce inflammation and promote healing in the gastrointestinal tract. This study shows how well the AIP diet works for Celiac, Crohns, and colitis. Efficacy... -
@Moomooandme13, Hi! I'm sorry you're feeling so poorly now. I developed thiamine deficiency before my diagnosis. Symptoms of thiamine deficiency include unintentional weight loss, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea. I followed Dr. Lonsdale's high dose Thiamine supplementation for correcting thiamine deficiency. I had...

@Beverage, Thanks for sharing! This is really interesting! I had to satisfy my curiosity and learn more, and found this... Hello! I have had skin problems caused by Celiac. I have dermatitis herpetiformis. I've also had hives and eczema. Hives can be caused by deficiencies in Vitamin B12 or iron. Even though you're gluten free, that doesn't mean you are eating and absorbing enough micronutrients. Eating a nutrient dense diet and supplementing with vitamins and...

@Ronald Corrigall, Welcome to the forum! I was prescribed high blood pressure medications, but they made me very ill because I had developed Hypersensitivity Type Four to sulfa drugs. Blood pressure medications are frequently sulfa drugs, as are medications for diabetes, and diuretics. My Hypersensitivity Type Four causes an immune system...

Be careful Ore Ida
knitty kitty replied to Marissa221's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
@Marissa221, Our bodies can handle a certain amount of histamine. We break it down with enzymes made from vitamins and minerals. But we can reach a point where our cup runs over, where we can't keep up. Like Lucy Ricardo in the chocolate factory. Once we reach the limit of our tolerance (a full cup), that's when digestive symptoms can start... -
Be careful Ore Ida
knitty kitty replied to Marissa221's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
@Marissa221, Sulfites cause mast cells to release lots of histamine, which is also what happens during the autoimmune reaction to gluten. Here's a good article... https://www.livestrong.com/article/108427-list-foods-sulfite-allergies/ -
Be careful Ore Ida
knitty kitty replied to Marissa221's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Forgot to mention that Sulfites are naturally occurring in anything fermented, like soy sauce, wines, sauerkraut and pickles. Apparently gochujang is a fermented chili paste... -
Yes, fentanyl does have nitrogen. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4137794/ Just because you eat it doesn't mean your body absorbs it. B12 needs an intrinsic factor to be absorbed. Alcohol disrupts the absorption of vitamins like B12 and Thiamine. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15138463/ Anemia of Autoimmune diseases...

knitty kitty replied to Julie Fairchild's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
@Julie Fairchild, I hate those horrible muscle cramps and spasms! I tried L - Glutamine and had a horrible reaction, too. I found that taking magnesium citrate and thiamine Vitamin B1 has helped get rid of them. In the morning and at midday, I take Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine (because this form helps heal the gastrointestinal... -
Hi, @Lobstah, Welcome back! I will take an educated guess. DH is associated with B12 malabsorption. B12 malabsorption causes anemia. Anemia affects production of red blood cells as well as white blood cells (like IgA antibodies). DH is a aggregation of deposits of IgA antibodies in the skin. No IgA, no DH. You might...

knitty kitty replied to Marissa221's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi, @Marissa221, I have a hypersensitivity to Sulfites. Sulfite Sensitivity can be found in Celiac Disease. Sulfites are used to prevent discoloration on potato products and chips. Because this is considered part of processing, Sulfites don't have to be listed on the label. I cannot tolerate Ore-Ida frozen potatoes. I have a reaction every... -
Can't stop crying!
knitty kitty replied to Julie Fairchild's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
@Julie Fairchild, Your journey to diagnosis sounds a lot like mine! I dove into liver, too! 😺 Years of misdiagnosis! I sympathize completely. Anemia and Diabetes can cause false negatives on blood tests for Celiac, and I had both. My blood tests were negative, too, so I opted for genetic testing. With two positive genes for Celiac, and an ar... -

More info about Vitamin Deficiencies
knitty kitty commented on knitty kitty's blog entry in Thiamine Thiamine Thiamine
@Charliexxx, It's not just B12 and Vitamin D deficiencies. Doctors know those are the only two tests for vitamin levels that are fairly reliable. The thing is we can have vitamin deficiencies before the blood levels change. Doctors don't mention or pay attention to the other B vitamins that are needed for all eight B vitamins to work properly... -
@Blue-eyed bandit, Having the two Celiac genes plus the high DGP antibodies would be enough for me to decide to remain gluten free whether or not intestinal damage was found, as a preventive measure. DGP antibodies are developed first in young people. The tTg antibodies come later. @Posterboy and I have found some scientific research papers...

Independent Livings and Assisted Livings
knitty kitty replied to Nikki2777's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Perhaps we should start our own Celiac City where gluten is not to be found for miles around. Gluten free restaurants, grocery stores, bed and breakfasts, retirement homes, amusement park, etc. and no worries! My local hospital can't get a gluten free/dairy free diet right yet, so nursing home care is scary. Do let us know what you find... -

@Gilly M, I am thrilled that you have found my blog useful. I'm grateful Scott Adams lets me share here so others don't have to reinvent the wheel. I asked about the salt intake because thiamine deficiency can manifest as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) resulting in low blood pressure and increasing salt intake is recommended...
