The Different Types of Celiac Disease
Auldtwa commented on Yvonne (Vonnie) Mostat, RN's article in Autumn 2022 Issue
I was originally diagnosed because I went terribly anemic; after checking for internal bleeding (which wasn't occurring) my doctor ordered blood tests. My endoscopy came back as "indeterminate." The doctor said "go gluten free" which I did. After he retired my new GI guy said what I have is "Atypical" which doesn't exactly jibe with this article. But I...- 3 comments

Uh, celiac disease and gluten intolerance aren't the same thing, are they?

My local stores have an adequate selection of gluten free food, but my gripe is with how they display it. Two have freezers labeled “gluten free” and for several years they have had NOTHING in them that is actually gluten free. They are filled with “natural” and “meat free” options that all, believe it or not, have wheat. The gluten free bread is in anoth...

no. I never had an upset tummy. Or rather, because my gut issues have nothing to do with gluten. I say that because I have blood tests every quarter and I am absorbing nutrients fine. And because my doctor told me that in light of that, I can handle trace. The very point I was making is that not everyone has to be overwhelmingly worried about trace...

I've had IBS all my life. Then suddenly about 8 years ago I became seriously anemic. Had an endoscopy that found a not particularly dreadful ulcer which the doctor removed. On checkback the anemia had gotten worse. So I had another endoscopy after some bloodwork was positive for celiac, and the biopsy was "inconclusive." The doctor suggested gluten free...

I have had several caustic conversations with store managers on the subject of lumping together products from brands that have both gluten and gluten-free varieties. Tate’s Cookies is a good example. But the thing that gravels me most is the apparent idea that gluten-free and health foods are the same thing. They mush them all together on an aisle often m...

Interesting. For me the ABSENCE of diarrhea and cramps is one way I tell a gluten experience from a normal virus/food poisoning episode. Just incredible nausea and vomiting from gluten But I never had “gut” symptoms pre diagnosis. Just super severe anemia. The vomiting reaction is POST gluten free diet. Dehydration, yes—that will send your syste...

I agree, Patty. But get the suppositories just in case. My last glutening wasn’t a restaurant. I bought a product in the store that said the ingredient was crab. It wasn’t. It was imitation crab. HUGE difference. And yes I bitched to the store and they talked to their supplier and the product now says imitation crab—and I needless to say don’t buy i...

For those of us with the extreme vomiting reaction to gluten, I think that it is the vomiting, not the gluten itself, that causes the scary stuff—precipitous drop in blood pressure and in blood sugar if you are diabetic, leading to passing out. Absent the vomiting the other stuff would not likely happen. So my doctor has prescribed for me strong anti nausea s...

A few years ago at an Old Spaghetti Factory, when I asked for gluten free pasta, the waiter asked if this was a "medical issue or lifestyle choice." I was bemused. I've been told that the difference is that for "medical issue" they boil the stuff in a separate pot not used for regular pasta. They worry less about cross contamination for "lifestyle choice...

CNN Gets it Wrong: You Can’t Cheat if You’re Gluten Sensitive
Auldtwa commented on Dr. Vikki Petersen D.C, C.C.N's article in Summer 2011 Issue
As I have posted before, I was diagnosed in 2013 after severe anemia, which corrected itself when I went gluten free. I did not have the intestinal issues beyond IBS which I've had since I was 8; those did not correct with a gluten free diet. I did not have eroded intestines, at the time the "gold standard." But at least 5 times since then I have had...- 3 comments

Could Gluten-Free Eating Leave You Alone and Misjudged?
Auldtwa commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Additional Concerns
Lately, half the people in pretty much any survey are insular and/or stupid. The internet gives so much information that is consumed so quickly (scroll those headlines) that people feel entitled to be utterly judgmental about something they know virtually nothing about. I stick a loaf of gluten free bread on the roller at the supermarket and can almost...- 3 comments

Tainted Gluten-Free Meal Nearly Kills Australian Woman
Auldtwa commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Additional Concerns
I’ve posted about this before. Sushi mislabeled as crab instead of imitation crab put me in an ambulance to the ER. The problem is that I am also diabetic. The vomiting took my blood sugar to subterranean levels. Be VERY careful if you are on insulin.- 5 comments

I asked about this a few years ago. The only response was "yeah, sometimes you vomit." I've experienced it again and wonder whether there is any newer research on it. I have been diagnosed with celiac disease, after severe anemia. My biopsies were "anomalous" but my blood work wasn't. I didn't really have gut issues. I've been gluten free for...
