Hmmm. My dx son recently got sick, and I was trying to find the source. He used Chapstick Lip Moisturizer. I contacted Wyeth Consumer (1-800-322-3129) and rec'd this email note from them on 3/10/06:
"The following list of Chap Stick products are deemed gluten free based on certification from our suppliers for all raw materials that go into the product. This certification is based on the fact that these products were not made from wheat, rye, oats, triticale, or barley and do not contain any ingredients that were derived from those grains. Those are the grains that contain the gliadin form of gluten. However, we do not test the finished product.

Sage has been gluten-free for only about 3 weeks and is having a really tough time with it. He's an wreck of emotions, crying, screaming, being aggressive with his baby sister- it's almost like the emotional upset that we experienced with him 2 years ago that got him a 2 day psych eval. and a misdiagnosis of "anxiety" which I now understand in my heart was the beginning stages of Celiac.
I get the sense that he's feeling this huge loss of control... and rightly so! What 5 year old can really comprehend the term "lifetime maintainence" when it comes to eating gluten-free? I also maybe feel like the better he feels physically, than obviously the more energy he has that just wasn't there before because he was so fatigued. He doesn't know how to unleash it... and we're trying to do our best by giving him choices of physical activity (we just signed him up for T-ball!) but since these things have never been a big part of his life, I can't expect that he wants to put down the gentler activities (arts and crafts, boardgames and computer games) and suddenly be an "All Star".
I just feel so horrible for what he must be feeling inside... I know it's hard and confusing and frustrating but what I don't know is how to make it easier on him, how to make him understand, how to get his behavior under control.
I need to figure it out soon though because his daily crying fits are pulling so hard at my heartstrings
Oh wow. Your post made me tear up. I have a 5 year old boy too. He was dx in Nov. and has been gluten-free since. Before being dx he was the most gentle soul, and loved as you say, "quiet" activities. When he first started the gluten-free diet (or Good Food as we sometimes call it here) I would say it took about 2-3 weeks for him to physically look and feel better. It took another 2-3 weeks for him to be emotionally healthy. There were days when he would scream, cry, scratch and hit at his face, yell at me, and hit me. I didn't think I could last much longer. I hugged him when he would let me, and I gave him space if he seemed to want that. But he did eventually calm back down. AS he got better, we had to be careful to treat him as a 5 year old still. Boundaries and rules still existed. But we waited, and introduced things slowly. First at home, then at school.
Our boys sound very similar. Hang in there. THings should get better, as he starts to truly feel better physically and emotionally. There is no concrete timeline for this.
I did take my son gocery shopping just the two of use, to Whole Foods, and some Health Food stores. He thought it was kinda cool, and called them "his stores" and "his food" I also made a cupboard that he could reach that had "his food" in it. Now the whole house is pretty much gluten-free but it took awhile.

My 5 year old was DX with celiac disease in Nov. and has been gluten-free ever since. He recently came down with diarrhea, and I'm trying to find out where it came from.
I read the thread on Rosarita Veg refried beans, but how about Rosarita traditional refried beans. I called Conagra, and I'm leaning towards them being gluten-free. My son being younger has a harder time IDing what might be bugging him. Has anyone had traditional refried beans with luck or with problems.

My 15 month old son just got out of the hospital on Firday. We spent 4 days there. He was admitted for dehydration and hypoglycemia (BS down to 46) caused from major runs that had been going on for a month and persistant vomiting. Our pediatrician had been running tests to try to find the reason but to no avail. After 2 ER visits they admitted him. They did a miriade of tests and everything is normal or negative. Ciliac is the only one that came back inconclusive. They had to send for another blood test using another diagnosis method. We are waiting to hear back about that. His igA was too low to read the origional test. His proteins are low, his sugar is low. THe more research I do about Celiac the more I just feel that this is the right diagnosis. My son has never slept through the night. Has always woke up every couple of hours (at best) crying and screaming and very uncomfortable cramping. His skin has always been SO itchy! He also has what was previously diagnosed as excema. He has been 23 pounds for 8 months now. Although he lost 1 1/2 pounds during the last month.
We went gluten free while in the hospital. As of today, 3 days off of gluten, he woke up one time last night to nurse then slept through until 7:30 this morning. He has been taking naps that are 1-1/2 hours long. He used to only sleep for 30 minutes at a time. His skin is so much better! He did not scratch his head raw last night! His vomiting has pretty much stopped and his poop was somewhat formed this morning!!! I am so happy. I am pretty confident that Celiac is what we are dealing with here. Is this too much information?
Anyway, we are on a giant learning curve here. We still arent diagnosed officially. I was looking for a place on this board to post an introduction and our story but I did not see one so I will post here.
Does this all sound like celiac? Are we in the right place? Anything else we should know? Thanks and sorry for the long post.
Oh my. Your child, and you, have certainly been through a lot. I'm new here also. So you can take my thoughts with a grain of salt. In hindsight, I would not have had the endoscopy done on my 5 year old son. His blood work was positive, his symptoms were "classic" and he had had a positive response to a gluten-free diet. It is a hard call, when Docs are telling you what "should" be done. My son's endoscopy was traumatic - due to a fear of needles and the IV. He was scared. I think the the endoscopy only confirmed for the doctor what my husband and I already new in our hearts.

Thank you for such quick and complete responses. Glad to hear (and read) that it isn't M&M's. Now I need to keep digging to see what else it could have been. Milk and water are the only two things he drinks. I'll look into milk as the culprit also. Thanks again - this can be tiring ya know?

Hi, I'm new here so bear with me.
My 5 yr old son was DX with celiac disease in late Nov 05 via blood work up and endoscopy. He has been gluten-free ever since, and doing REALLY well. A few days ago he started having diarrhea. I was hoping it was just a cold, something other than gluten, since I am his primary sorce of food. I'm becoming convinced that somewhere he consumed gluten, so I've been going back over foods that he ate. In the process I did a check on M&Ms (which I was under the impression were gluten-free) I called MaterFoods, who distributes Mars, who distributes M&Ms. There 800# lists gluten-free brands. They DO NOT include M&Ms!!! I have since sent emails to verify if they are gluten-free or not. Has anyone else heard of a change in M&Ms?
Needless to say I feel terrible making him sick
I know accidents happen but still...

We took my 5 year old to Dr. Larry Eisenberg in Tarzana. We were very pleased with him. He even called our peds dr and gave him an earful for not handling my son's case well.

Just a heads up. Last we talked, he still supports doing a biopsy even if the blood tests come back positive. The choice is always yours of course.
