TTg-iga test for a 2 year old
pschwab replied to 20somethingmama's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was 2.5 when tested and his ttg came back just fine showing he was positive for celiac. He was only sick for about 4 months when we tested him (throwing up, diarrhea, constant stomach aches). His genetic test came back positive and we avoided scoping him at all. He got his positive celiac diagnosis and here we are 3 years later. I think every kid and... -
When my son was diagnosed we decided to make our house completely gluten free because of his age (2) and the age of his siblings (4,6). That meant cleaning our whole kitchen inside and out, top to bottom. I was baffled and overwhelmed. I was desperately searching the Internet for help when I ran across an article about cleaning peanut proteins off surfaces...

Certified gluten free, but made on shared equipment?
pschwab replied to Fbmb's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I posted about this exact topic a few weeks ago!! I don’t think I post in the right subtopic because I rarely get answers. So I’m so happy you asked about this!! I too question things made in a facility that processes wheat/gluten. I’ve contacted a few companies about specific products, but I’d be interested in hearing from experienced celiacs about what th... -
Kraft Dinner Cheese Packets
pschwab replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Annie’s brand cheese in the gluten-free boxed Mac and cheese is pretty good. We buy that, throw out the gross rice noodles and substitute barilla gluten-free elbows. My kids love it. Maybe they have that in Canada? -
Nestle Butterscotch Chips??

Hershey’s butterscotch chips are gluten free. We use those instead of nestles -

I have called or emailed companies in the past and feel comfortable doing that. I guess I’m wondering, in general, how experienced celiacs deal with gluten free items manufactured in facilities with shared equipment? Are you saying call them all? I’m happy to stick with that if it’s the safest option. Thanks! -
We have been completely gluten free in our home for the past 2.5 years since my son was diagnosed with celiac. We have been super strict about what foods he can eat, and haven't taken any "risks" with him with questionable items. I'd like some advice from the more experienced people on this site. My husband purchased some prepackaged cookies online. They...

Fatigue - Athlete

Solid plan to have her vitamin d, calcium and iron levels checked! It’s not uncommon for teenage girls to be low in iron (mild anemia) even without celiac. -
Bread question
pschwab replied to mbrookes's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Love canyon bake house bagels. We eat mainly Glutino white sandwich bread (4 young kids) because it seems most like regular white bread in texture and taste. We also like schar bread because it doesn’t need to be frozen and can sit in the pantry. -
Gluten proteins can be transferred through breast milk, so you are correct not consuming gluten yourself while nursing. We are completely gluten free in our home. I have a thirteen month old who is still nursing and only has two teeth as well. She eats everything we eat. We do a lot of steamed veggies (carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, green beans) and...

Confused as how to proceed
pschwab replied to meycita's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Another route to take could be genetic testing. If he has the gene that could push them to test further to see if he’s actually triggered the celiac, and if he doesn’t have the gene celiac is ruled out and you can pursue other reasons for his condition. It’s not cheap though so keep that in mind as well. -
My son’s GI said his high antibody levels with a positive genetic test were sufficient for the formal celiac diagnosis without a biopsy. We went that route and were happy to be able to immediately go gluten free. We noticed such improvement so quickly. I think you need to get the blood test (full panel) and then go from there with genetic testing versus b...

Our son was diagnosed with celiac and we were told to have all first degree relatives tested as well. No one else currently has celiac, but we also did genetic testing and found that two siblings and his dad all have the gene. Therefore it came through the dad's side. I've personally never heard that it's more likely to come from the mother. I would highly...

Need help desperately now!
pschwab replied to gluten-free girl 67's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Bring your own food is my advice. I don’t think the host will be offended if you explain you have an autoimmune disease and must avoid certain foods. Profusely thank her for the invitation, gush about her house, gloss over the food stuff like it’s no big deal and move on doing what you need to to remain healthy. If we don’t focus on the food I think it he... -
7 year old and biopsy
pschwab replied to AnneR's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My two year old had a ttg level of 301 when he was diagnosed. His gi dr said a positive genetic test with those high numbers was sufficient to confirm it was celiac without doing the biopsy. We went that route so that we could start him on a gluten free diet immediately. THe genetic test is expensive so I understand some people would rather do the biopsy... -
I’m a high school teacher, someone who had an eating disorder as a teenager and a mom to a celiac superstar (he’s 4). I do and will continue to do everything I can for my son; I’m already trying to plan ahead to make college a seemless transition for him. ? Please, please, please talk to your parents! They are obviously supportive because they made your ...

speech delay b/c of gluten?
pschwab replied to izamo12's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was two and a half when diagnosed. We didn't notice any speech issues, but we did see a dramatic increase in vocabulary and grammar about a month after going gluten free. My theory is that he was so focused on how terrible he was feeling physically that he couldn't focus on developing his verbal skills until he started to heal. He's four now and his... -
Canadian Celiac diagnosis
pschwab replied to Sharonmknze's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Our son's doctor said an extremely high blood test in conjunction with a positive genetic test were sufficient for a formal celiac diagnosis. No biopsy was needed and he could immediately go gluten free. -
Need help: School Lunch ideas w/o gluten-free Bread
pschwab replied to cbush's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Can you talk to the school about a 504 plan? In Wisconsin our kids can get 504 plans to assist kids who need extra accommodations. If your schools in Texas utilize 504s, the school is required to follow them. You can get special accommodations like daily access to a fridge and microwave. We are planning to get one in place when my celiac superhero starts... -
Genetic Testing for celiac
pschwab replied to CeliacMommaX2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'm not an expert by any means but I'll tell you our experience. My three year old was diagnosed based upon a very high ttg level and a positive genetic test. My husband got tested and has the gene but hasn't triggered celiac. My 7 year old has the gene but not celiac. My 5 year old doesn't have the gene. I haven't been tested because I figure it's coming... -
I don't know much about how celiac relates to pregnancy personally, but I've heard stories. I can address a couple other things though. Normal range for the test we had was 20 or below. My son's antibody levels started at 300, dropped to 71 in 6 months, then dropped to 26 a year after diagnosis. So within a year, he has gotten very close to "normal range...

honest shampoo and body wash
pschwab replied to pschwab's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
My celiac superhero is 4 so we were advised to make sure his shampoo is gluten free until he is old enough to make sure he isn't getting any into his mouth (the dietitian said around 8 or 9, he will be proficient enough).
