  1. Brenda, welcome to the forum! That's going to be challenging. Not as much from the gluten standpoint but from the age standpoint as physicians are reluctant to prescribe many common sleep meds like ambien to us who have quite a few candles on our birthday cakes. I'm 73. They are afraid we will get up to go potty in the middle of the night and fall. Having...
  2. Many of your symptoms are classic celiac symptoms. Your history is complex and timing with respect to periods of being gluten free and being tested for celiac is critical. Also, it is unfortunate that no biopsy was done when the upper GI was performed since unless damage is advanced it may not be visible during scoping. You could also have NCGS (Non...
  3. I have some anxiety about eating out at restaurants but I'd call it more like vigilance. I do not use gluten breakdown supplements. Those supplements themselves make me ill, believe it or not. I'm not a super sensitive celiac so I can get away with a little cross contamination when eating out. As long a wheat/barely/rye are not intentional ingredients I am...
  4. This is not abnormal at all, Mary. I get almost exactly the same reaction as you do when I have an accidental ingestion of gluten to any extent. Before my diagnosis 23 years ago, when I was consuming gluten daily, my symptoms were very vague. A little tummy discomfort, occasional diarrhea, headaches. Now, after more than two decades of not being exposed regularly...
  5. Scott, I imagine the companies in question will not be forthcoming with responses to inquiries about this matter because some of them are in the process of litigation already and others fear it might be coming. They don't want to say anything they might regret that could become a part of public record. But I want to thank you for acting on behalf of our community...
  6. Jackie, unfortunately, medical doctors are not well-trained on nutritional issues and you are not likely to get much interest from you doctor about vitamin and mineral supplements. But on this forum we learn of the nutritional ravages of celiac disease everyday. We routinely suggest that newly diagnosed celiacs start taking a high potency B-complex vitamin...
  7. He can always stick to fresh naturally gluten free food items like potatoes, rice, fresh meat, fruit and veggies as opposed to prepackaged meals and entrees.
  8. "The biopsies of duodenal mucosa show increased intra-epithelial lymphocytes and severe villous blunting" I agree with you conclusion, Sarah. Time to put her on the gluten free diet in earnest.
  9. Scott has good advice. Also, craving of food can be due to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. If you are relying heavily on gluten free flours and gluten free ready made foods you are not getting much nutrition. Those things aren't required to be fortified like as are mainline products using wheat flour. Are you taking any vitamin and minerals supplements...
  10. Personally, I'm not as concerned that the individual imported ingredients are tested as gluten free as I am the final product. To me, that's where the rubber meets the road.
  11. The other thing to be concerned about is that litigation may motivate some companies to simply drop their gluten-free food lines altogether.
  12. LP023, you hit the nail on the head when you term the use of "Gluten Free" by the food industry an "honor system". This whole system is too casual. But my understanding is that the GFCO logo does imply that the products have indeed been tested. The FDA needs to ratchet up the testing standards here. It would be interesting to have a range of products...
  13. Yes, fatigue is a classic symptom of getting glutened. Sounds like you are getting cross contamination on a regular basis as I'm sure at diners they are cooking everything on the same grill. You might try asking if they could cook your stuff in clean pans because you have a medical condition that requires you to avoid even traces of wheat.
  14. Please get back to us. I hope every organization advocating for celiacs is made aware of this study and starts putting pressure on these entities for some answers and some change.
  15. It took my wife and I about two years to get a feel for how gluten is hidden in the food supply, particularly in processed foods. It can be disguised in terminology and it can show up in places you would never expect like soy sauce, Campbell's tomato soup and even pancake syrup. In time you develop a sixth sense about all this - as it were. Then there is...
  16. Welcome to the forum, @NJJOE640! Can you be a little more specific about your question. Are you asking if other celiacs are experiencing this same roller coaster effect with their efforts to eat gluten free?
  17. The sad thing about all this is that it severely erodes the trust that those in the gluten intolerant/gluten sensitive community have in food companies and in gluten free/GFCO labeled products in general. How much do these labels really mean? Makes me think I might have been a little judgmental toward my "super sensitive" fellow celiacs. It may not be all...
  18. Wow! Thanks for this, Scott! We use those Banza chickpea noodles a lot. So much so, I've been complaining to my wife that I'm getting tired of them. Now there is a better reason to avoid them. But this article is extremely revealing. Glyphosate has gotten a bum rap for years and really it is the misuse of it as a drying agent to accelerate harvest time...
  19. This article is extremely revealing. Glyphosate has gotten a bum rap for years and really it is the misuse of it as a drying agent to accelerate harvest time that is the real problem. Food companies need to put their feet down and only buy agricultural products from producers who do no use glyphosate in this way. And consumers must hold their feet to the...
  20. ABJ08, are you sure you typed that "IGg A was 265 ref mg/L 87/352" correctly? "IGg A" is not a familiar abbreviation, though the magnitude of the numbers makes it look like it refers to total IGA. A total IGA test is often run in conjunction with the TTG-IGA because if total IGA is low it will skew the TTG-IGA down toward the negative range. Question...
  21. About 10g of gluten is found 4-6 slices of wheat bread, just to give you an idea of what that looks like in real food servings. That should be followed for several weeks leading up to either the antibody testing or the endoscopy/biopsy.
  22. Welcome to the forum, @LovintheGFlife! 1. Are you consistent with eating gluten free? 2. Since being diagnosed with celiac disease, have you had any follow-up testing (blood antibody or biopsy) to check for the status in healing of the small bowel villous lining? 3. Are you still consuming dairy products? 4. What meds are you taking? ...
  23. He could have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) which shares many of the same symptoms with celiac disease but for which there is not yet any diagnostic testing available. It does not do damage to the small bowel lining as does celiac disease so it does not produce antibodies that can be detected by a blood test or and, of course, a biopsy of the small...
  24. What about prunes?
