  1. You would need to be eating significant amounts of gluten for at least 6 weeks before testing for it to be valid. A colonoscopy would not be used to diagnose Celiac Disease since celiac disease does damage to the small bowel lining. A colonoscopy is for checking the large bowel. What you need is an endoscopy, aka, upper GI scoping and biopsy. There are...
  2. Three things: 1. If you have been eating gluten-free (or trying to) for awhile, the endoscopy and biopsy may be invalid or inconclusive just as with the blood tests. 2. Dude, you must get a handle on cross contamination. You need to be more diligent about this. You are shooting yourself in the foot if you are trying to eat gluten-free but not being...
  3. All cereal grains contain gluten but the gluten is different in each one. The gluten in wheat, barley and rye (and for some people, oats also) is very similar and is what causes the celiac reaction. So in common parlance "gluten" has come to refer the gluten in wheat, barley, rye and maybe oats. The gluten in corn is dissimilar enough to the gluten in those...
  4. I've had several endoscopies performed over the years and they are a quick and easy procedure. Doesn't require bowel prep, just no food after midnight the day before. Out patient procedure, conscious or light sedation and very minimal risk. Not painful or unpleasant at all. I understand your concern about COVID but personally, I think the peace of mind from...
  5. Mail/post? Do you mean the postal service via snail mail? What country are you in? They don't do that here in the USA. For me and many others in the USA, we can check test results via our medical provider's online tool. Each patient has an account that can be accessed online where we receive messages and test results and can even schedule appointments.
  6. Cindy, what difference does living in a small town make in this matter? Are you saying you don't have many choices when it comes to choosing physicians knowledgeable about Celiac Disease? I live in a small town in the middle of a very rural county in Washington state. I don't feel handicapped by that. There is so much knowledge on the Internet about medicine...
  7. "Receive them in the post"? What post do you refer to? Do you mean in the follow up visit with the doctor? Did you have an endoscopy (aka, upper GI)? About a week I think.
  8. When you cheat it may take two or three weeks to recover. Ain't worth it.
  9. Do you get sick when you drink hard distilled spirits from other sources such as corn or potatoes?
  10. The fatty stools with dairy may be due to the fat itself in the dairy. Do you get this if you drink skim milk?
  11. I use ON Gold Standaad Chocolate flavor100% Whey sold by Costco and Bob's Red Mill Soy Protein Isolate without any issues. They are both adverstised to be gluten-free. Of course, the problem with any question like this is how sensitive to trace amounts of gluten is the individual? We know now that the FDA 20 ppm standard for gluten free labeling is not not...
  12. The problem with going gluten-free before testing is that it will invalidate the tests. You need to be eating a significant amount of gluten daily for at least 6 weeks for the testing to be valid. Another option is ordering a home test kit and send the samples off to a lab for testing. But I hear your pain. It's a dilemma in the present COVID situation.
  13. Your symptoms are classic for Celiac Disease.
  14. Accept their ignorance for what it is and don't let it become a wedge that separates you from them. Your marriage will suffer if you can't get along with hubby's parents. Aside from that, when you get home, scrub the kitchen, appliances and cookware down thoroughly. Consider getting some educational material on celiac disease into in laws' hands. Also...
  15. When going back on gluten for testing I think a minimum of six weeks of daily significant gluten consumption is recommended.
  16. Are you asking these questions because you think you might have Celiac Disease or because you think you might just be gluten intolerant? They are two different conditions.
  17. I agree with Scott's advice, Hunter. We advise getting a formal diagnosis but the delay in scheduling testing combined with severity of symptoms makes that impractical sometimes. Our concern is that people with a formal diagnosis are less likely to rationalize and cheat on their intentions to eat gluten-free. There may also be some advantages to a formal...
  18. Sarah, there have been several form participants of late whose blood tests were negative but who have definite symptoms of Celiac Disease. Some have even had positive intestinal biopsies for Celiac Disease after negative blood tests. So some questions for you. 1. Do you know what specific blood tests were done? Some doctors are not up on which ones to...
  19. So you are asymptomatic? Are you still eating out? Are you using processed foods and if so are they just labeled "Gluten Free" or are they labeled "Certified Gluten Free?"
  20. There are more than a few forum contributors that will swear they have reactions to the external application of health and beauty aids containing gluten. I am not sure it has been scientifically proven or even really studied yet.
  21. EH, don't forget that celiac suffers are not immune the various other medical problems that may have nothing to do with gluten. There is a tendency when freshly diagnosed with celiac disease to see all health issues through that lens. This especially needs emphasizing as we face the COVID pandemic.
  22. As long as the containers are thoroughly washed after having been used with gluten containing food items they should be fine. The only hesitation I have is that tupperware can possibly trap gluten in the plastic if it gets hot enough. Same with utensils. Are you sharing a home with others who are not eating gluten free? Keep in mind that Celiacs often...
  23. I don't have DH but there are those on the forum who know what it looks like so that's why I asked for a pic. Or, you can google it.
  24. I wouldn't think at 26 the pain in your digit would be arthritis. Can you post a pick of the rash on your knee? Something called Dermatitis Herpetiformis is a classic expression of Celiac Disease.
  25. All the symptoms you describe align with Celiac Disease but could be due to other things as well. Sounds like you should get a blood antibody test for diagnosing Celiac Disease. May we ask what age group you are in?
