Am I being glutened - what to do?
trents replied to Galbin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I wonder if you are reacting to something else in the mouthwash and toothpaste besides gluten. -
About 10% of people with celiac disease react to oat gluten the way the react to wheat, barely and rye gluten. And I'm talking about "gluten free" oats. All cereal grains have a form of gluten but in common parlance when we talk about having Celiac Disease, gluten intolerance, gluten sensitivity or an allergy to gluten we are referring to the gluten in those...

Vertigo caused by celiac ?
trents replied to Steve6090's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Steve, celiac disease has long fingers. A host of other medical problems can be spinoffs of celiac disease. There are several other forum participants of late with gluten-related maladies who have struggled with vertigo as you do. I would offer three pieces of advice: 1. Focus on truly purging gluten from your diet. Educate yourself on how widely... -
LI$A, where do you live? If I were you I would take this issue up with the food services department at this hospital and push them to develop gluten-free offerings for their patients. If they are not responsive to your input, I would consider an writing an oped for the local newspaper informing the public in your community that this hospital may not...

Am I being glutened - what to do?

How can this be? Do you mean they are gluten-free before the liquid and the paste are put in the bottles and tubes that we see in the store? So you're saying they may experience cross contamination during the filling process or that the containers may be cross contaminated? Please elaborate on this and please supply sources for your claim. -

Jean, are you "reintroducing gluten into your meals" on purpose? Do you have an official diagnosis of celiac disease or some other gluten-related medical condition? -
You may be in the beginning stages of celiac disease or have gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity. I would also suggest you consider SIBO. This is a good watch as well for understanding the importance of acting early on autoimmune conditions: So another option would be to do a gluten free trial and see if your symptoms improve. It would require...

Am I being glutened - what to do?
trents replied to Galbin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Recent research reported by the NIH seems to indicate that the mucosa of celiacs never completely heals when examined under high power microscopes. There can be healing at a certain level but not completely. Besides, the unraveling of the immune system is something that begins before diagnosis for most celiacs and going gluten free does not necessarily arrest... -
Am I being glutened - what to do?
trents replied to Galbin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I wonder if you have developed an allergy/insensitivity/intolerance to some food or foods that do not contain gluten. This is common with celiacs because of leaky gut syndrome and the immune system dysfunction it produces. I was also going to suggest a SIBO eval but you are onto that already. -
Feeling lost, what to do?
trents replied to Quen's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Your gluten relapse over the holidays may not have been long enough to give a valid blood antibody test for celiac disease. Six to eight weeks eating a significant amount of gluten daily (equivalent of 1-2 slices of bread) is the guideline for pretesting gluten ingestion in order to ensure a valid antibody test. You might also look into SIBO testing...- 4 replies

trents replied to gporter26's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You may very well be correct in your assessment but it sounds like his parents are not open to the idea. That's a very touchy situation as you don't want to get pushy and alienate his parents. In the end, you are not his parents and have no control over the situation. Sounds like you have breached the idea with his parents and that is about all you can do... -
The headaches could be triggered by something in her diet besides gluten. Over time, celiacs commonly develop allergies/intolerances to other foods besides those containing gluten. This is because of damage to the mucosal lining of the small bowel which allows larger than normal protein fractions to cross into the blood stream. We call this "leaky gut syndrome...

If they have been Certified Gluten Free that means they have been tested such that any cross contamination that might occur in the production environment has proven to be less than the 20ppm of gluten threshold needed to qualify for the CFG label. However, 20ppm is still enough to trigger reactions in some celiacs who are especially sensitive to gluten. It...

Welcome to the forum, Ellis! Sounds like you are on the right track now. You have other health issues in addition to probably celiac disease so it will take awhile to get things balanced out, meds tweaked, etc. Glad you are already feeling so much better. I applaud you for taking the bull by the horns and appropriately asserting yourself with your GP...

Could it be Celiac disease?
trents replied to Madmichie's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The fact that there isn't any history in the family of celiac disease doesn't mean that there wasn't any. It just means that no one was diagnosed with it. Many celiacs are largely asymptomatic for many years. We call that "silent celiac disease." You have many symptoms that directly or indirectly point to celiac disease. I would certainly request that from... -
Let me reinforce something I stated in my earlier post. There are several gluten-related medical disorders. There can be an allergy to gluten. There can be a sensitivity to gluten. There can be an intolerance to gluten which causes diarrhea such as you see when people have lactose intolerance to milk sugar. These are all distinct medical conditions but none...

Welcome to the forum, Dandysam. First, you use the term "gluten allergy." People can have an allergy to gluten but I suspect you are referring to celiac disease which is not an allergy but an autoimmune disorder. Your hubby's stomach pain, anemia and fatigue can be indicators of celiac disease. Celiac Disease ("celiac disease") cannot be diagnosed with...

trents replied to baby.alpaca's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to he forum, baby.alpaca! I'm a little confused by your post. Doctors don't use a colonoscopy to diagnose celiac disease. They use an "endoscopy." A colonoscopy examines the lower intestinal track below the area that is directly affected by celiac disease. Celiac disease directly affects the small bowel, the area just below the stomach. It damages...
