  1. Actually, many celiacs are overweight because they instinctively eat more to compensate for poor nutrient absorption. But other celiacs are under weight and have trouble gaining for the same reason. And this can be exacerbated by poor appetite. We are all different in this regard and celiac disease can exacerbate our genetic body weight and appetite tendencies...
  2. Do you have reaction to traces of dairy?
  3. Are you referring to cross contamination as opposed to purposely including dairy as an ingredient?
  4. Not sure what you mean when you ask about doctors dismissing you. Are you asking if because you have confirmed celiac disease that they will not take the possibility of other bowel diseases seriously and so not do the other tests?
  5. Absolutely it is possible to have gluten intolerance and also have a negative biopsy. But do you realize that gluten intolerance is not the same as celiac disease? Gluten intolerance can produce GI distress but does not damage the mucosa and villi of the small bowel as does celiac disease. Having said that the range of symptoms you describe certainly point...
  6. Martha, you will love this keto friendly desert: Keto Chocolate Mousse With Cream Cheese (Adapted from July 30, 2018 by Jolene @ Yummy Inspirations) Keto Chocolate Mousse with Cream Cheese Recipe 2 Cup Heavy/Double/Whipping Cream 8 ounces Cream Cheese, softened 3/8 cup Cocoa Powder ¼ cup agave ¼ tsp salt ...
  7. Are you saying your allergy to cats is a gluten symptom or are you saying that some allergies also were reduced? Celiac disease is not an allergy. It is an autoimmune disease.
  8. Celiac disease affects the small bowel right below the stomach. This is checked with an upper GI scoping ("endoscopy") rather than a colonoscopy. However, other bowel autoimmune diseases that attack the lower bowel are more common in people with Celiac disease.
  9. Yes, that would be appropriate. Most smoothies use fruit so you will need to be creative with snacks like that. Look into chia seeds, too. They are low carb, high fat, high fiber and have many nutrients. They are a staple of many on the keto diet. Most nuts and seeds are good choices for the keto diet. One exception would be cashews as they are higher in...
  10. Martha, are you comfortable in researching on a computer? There is tons of information on the Internet about the science behind the keto diet and guidance as to food choices. There are not only articles but pod casts as well. I would certainly suggest investing in some high potency vitamins and supplements. There are two main challenges with regard to the...
  11. The keto diet can do wonders for blood sugar issues. Do you have any GI distress or other symptoms besides Hashimoto's that might point to a problem with gluten or having celiac disease?
  12. The keto diet is defined as high fat, very low carb and only moderate protein intake. But I wouldn't worry too much about the protein element as long as you are getting enough. Many high fat animal product foods are also high in protein so it's difficult to do both unless you go almost vegetarian. I would say shoot for 75-100 grams a day. Is your Hashimotos...
  13. Cook some bacon. Peanuts. Pecans. If you are going to go keto, research what vegetables are appropriate for the keto diet. Many vegetables are high in carbs so there is a nutritional challenge there. Squashes are good for keto as are avocados. Green leafy veggies are good. Broccoli is not a good choice an neither are most legumes. Potatoes are high in...
  14. Did this doctor or any other have you tested for celiac disease? If not, I find it curious that she would recommend you eliminate gluten from your diet. Concerning the keto diet, it really works for losing weight. I personally know a number of people who have had lasting success with it. Basically, the keto diet trains your metabolism to use fat for...
  15. Martha, why has the doctor recommended these diet changes? What particular issue is the doctor trying to address with you? And what kind of doctor is this? Medical doctor or naturopathic or whatever?
  16. Yes, tapioca and cassava are used heavily in gluten-free processed foods these days. Seems like manufactures have been switching from using rice flour over to tapioca and cassava in the last few years.
  17. Scott, Do you have any info on the availability of the Nima gluten sensors? They've been unavailable for months as have the capsules. I did some research back this summer and the original developer of the sensor sold the rights to some medical supply company who seems to have production on hold for now. Not sure if that is because they have switched...
  18. This is not true for all celiacs. Some are much more sensitive to gluten exposure than others. Those who are not sensitive may not realize when they have been glutened.
  19. Contact your pharmaceutical provider and ask them to research it. I have done this on several occasions with meds I take. Typically, they can tell you what goes into the pill but they can't guarantee no cross contamination with other ingredients during manufacture.
  20. I can no longer tolerate hemp whereas formerly I could use it without issue. Same with avocados and chia seeds. This change happened over the course of a summer two years ago. These seeds now give me violent emesis within 2-3 hours of consumption.
  21. Hard boiled eggs would be the safest, but not necessarily the most tasty. Nikkie2777, funny you should mention that hotel eggs make you sick. I've noticed lately that eggs often give me a belly ache these days, even when I cook them myself at home. If I eat a small serving of eggs I'm okay but not so with a large serving. Same with some tree nuts and...
  22. Nikki2777: good words.
