Yes and this is true of gluten free ready made, processed and prepackaged foods in general. In particular, hard to digest polysaccharides are commonly used in these products that give many celiacs issues and I personally don't handle some emulsifiers well. IMO, reactions to these ingredients are often mistaken for a gluten reaction.

Welcome to the forum, @lsky! In Canada I believe your healthcare system is totally socialized so I doubt if you have the option of making direct appointments with specialists. In the U.S. it is becoming more and more that way as most people here now are covered by some government managed healthcare network and almost all providers and specialists are...

Symptoms after ingesting gluten
trents replied to Juliana82's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum @Juliana82! Bleeding where? Thanks for the articles on seronegative celiac disease. As I recall, one of our moderators is seronegative and has been faithful to draw our attention to this phenomenon at different times. The heterozygous factor seronegative celiac disease is an important factoid I believe. -

Yes, but if you had been avoiding bread because of the stricture, that might explain the negative result of the previous celiac antibody test. -

Diabetes and Hashimoto's as well, huh? You are the epitome of the autoimmune cascade effect. That is, once you get one autoimmune condition you tend to develop others. But I am curious. In the sequence of these several autoimmune diagnoses, where did the celiac diagnosis come? You certainly have a lot of health issues to juggle. -

So, you have a couple of strikes against you when it comes to nutrient absorption efficiency. -
Welcome to the forum, @green-blossom! You can develop active celiac disease at any stage of life. It involves possessing the genetic potential plus some triggering stress event that turns the relevant genes on. NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) is 10x more common than celiac disease but some experts feel it can be a precursor to the development of...

@llisa, have you also been diagnosed with celiac disease? You don't actually say but we have assumed that. -
Gluten free vitamins

Yes, I have concerns about the calcium supplementation as well. Sounds like a good idea on the surface if you are trying to address bone density issues but when overdone it can have the opposite effect. Calcium supplementation increases gut PH (i.e., lowers gut acidity) which can interfere with vitamin and mineral (including calcium itself) absorption. Often... -
Gluten free vitamins

The forms that vitamin and mineral supplements come in can be important. Bioavailability (i.e., how well they are absorbed) is often sacrificed for the sake of cost and shelf life. The vitamin or mineral you are targeting is always chemically combined with other elements to make them into a dispensable form (such as a powder, liquid or a pill) and to give... -
Gluten free vitamins

@llisa, back then when you tried magnesium and it upset your tummy, I'm guessing you were using the most common form of magnesium found on store shelves, namely, magnesium oxide. It has a reputation for having a laxative effect. It is not very well absorbed and so draws a lot of water into the colon, just like the laxative known as milk of magnesia. I'm guessing... -

Have you considered also supplementing with magnesium and zinc? We usually recommend these two as well. D3, Calcium and Magnesium all important for bone and nerve health. -
Gluten free vitamins

Not sure if it's the same formulation as what they sell to Costco. Look for "Gluten Free" on the packaging. And realize that "Gluten Free" does not mean "no gluten". It simply means not more than 20 ppm of gluten. That's fine for most celiacs but if you are of the super sensitive subset it may not be. -
Gluten free vitamins

Welcome to the forum, @llisa! If you are near a Costco, their Kirkland Signature brand, Nature Made and others are often gluten free and, if so, will state so on the packaging. They are economically priced as well. -
Milaryrnn, your post is confusing. First, your celiac disease antibody testing is negative. By any chance had you already been on a gluten free diet before the blood draw for these tests was done? That would result in negative antibody testing even if you had celiac disease. Or, had you previously been diagnosed with celiac disease and had the antibody...

Celiac Maybe a Possibility?
trents replied to More2Learn's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Because you have significantly reduced your gluten intake over a considerable amount of time, it is likely that you will test negative on the antibody tests. However, if the $112 for the Quest test is not a burden, it wouldn't hurt to try. It tests for total IGA (to ascertain if you are IGA deficient) and tTG-IGA. If total IGA is deficient, it can result... -
Yep, the edit window times out very quickly. It's okay. I got a good laugh out of it.

I hope you meant "pen pal" instead of "paypal".

I am glad to hear you are not taking acid blocking meds as they increase gut PH which inhibits mineral absorption which, in turn, often causes the body to rob it's own bones of the calcium it needs for various metabolic processes. I was asking about that because acid reflux is very common in the celiac community.

Yaya, from the JAMA study you refer to: "Taking 60,000 international units (IU) a day of vitamin D for several months has been shown to cause toxicity." No one on this forum is recommending taking anywhere near that amount. We're talking about 5-10,000IU daily.

Toddler Diagnosis?
trents replied to CatLady15's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, @CatLady15! Your son's test results, both bloodwork and biopsy, are not uncommon for someone with celiac disease. The test results are not dramatic but they often aren't. The DQ2 gene is the strongest single gene marker indicating the potential for developing active celiac disease. AST is a liver enzyme. About 20% of celiacs have...
