Wheatwacked replied to Suze046's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello @Suze046 In the western world 40 to 60 percent are low or deficient in Vitamin D. Malabsorption from Celiac Disease, avoidance of UV from the sun and seasonal variations can result in low vitamin D. A simple 25(OH)D test will tell you your status. Low vitamin D affects immune system, bone health, mental health. I keep mine around 80 ng/ml ...- 5 replies

Studies have shown that individuals with canker sores tend to have lower levels of vitamin D in their blood compared to those without the condition. This suggests that vitamin D deficiency could be a risk factor for developing canker sores. Vitamin D deficiency is very common in Celiac Disease.

So Sunday night after writing that post about Losartan was causing weakness in my hips I decided to stop taking it, even if against medical advice. When I was 12 years old I read a book called The First Hundred Years of Surgery. It gave me insight to the politics, financials and egos of the world. My take-away at the time was: one day I'm going to have...

I hate to cook!
Wheatwacked replied to bold-95's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
In 70-year-olds, DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) levels are significantly lower than in young adults, typically around 20% of youthful levels, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) | (.gov). This decline is a natural part of aging, with DHEA production decreasing from its peak in the third decade of life. While some studies suggest potential... -

Wheatwacked replied to bold-95's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Welcome @bold-95. That's a tough situation. Understanding DHEA Deficiency in Menopausal Women A major cause of hypothyroid is iodine deficiency. In the 60's bread had 90 mcg, milk 100 mcg per cup and we used iodized table salt. A sandwich and glass of milk supplied 300 mcg, Now in the US bread does not use iodine as dough condition... -
For minor aches and pains, my go to is Original Alka-Seltzer. Aspirin and bicarbonate. It is dissoved in water before you swallow it so no tablets to aggravate the stomach wall. The bicarbonate buffers the stomach acid for upset stomach. Willow bark contains a chemical called salicin, which is similar to aspirin. It has pain and fever reducing effects...

Just like you cannot be a little pregnant, you cannot be a little Celiac. Here is an article I found that explains what the numbers mean. Are You Confused About Your Celiac Disease Lab Results? Am I celiac or not?
Wheatwacked replied to somethinglikeolivia's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
While a definitive causal link remains unclear, vitamin D's known role in immune modulation and intestinal barrier integrity suggests that it plays a significant role in the development and progression of celiac disease. Reduced 25(OH)D levels are associated with celiac disease. In celiac disease, gluten can damage these tight junctions, and vitamin D may... -
Ocd making gluten fears unmanageable. Need advice
Wheatwacked replied to Dora77's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
How high is too high? I take 10,000 IU vitamin D3 every day. My blood is stable at 80 ng/ml (200 nmol/L). Even at 10,000 a day it took 8 years to raise it to 80. Higher levels of 25(OH)D in blood can moderate the autoimmune attack. Vitamin D Is Not as Toxic as Was Once Thought Lower vitamin D levels have also been associated with increased OCD symptom...- 9 replies

Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to rib pain. Chest pain stemming from the ribs ccould be costochondritis, which involves inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the breastbone. This pain can range from mild to severe, potentially mimicking heart attack symptoms, and is often worsened by breathing or movement. Other potential causes include...

"Vitamin D, as an immune modulator, is known to regulate immune response and maybe implicated in disease pathogenesis or susceptibility of celiac disease. Components of the immune system, such as B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes, and dendritic cells, are influenced by the regulatory effects of Vitamin D ... Increasing evidence also suggests that Vitamin D deficiency...

Hi @Stephanie Wakeman, Get your vitamind D blood level checked and supplement to raise to around 80 ng/dl or 200 nmol/L. This is the natural upper limit and provides the best immune system. Vitamin D plays a role in regulating the immune system, and low levels may impair the immune system's ability to control allergic responses. Vitamin D deficiency...

Thanks for bringing this up again. That week my doctor sent me for a Carotid Artery scan that came back 90% blockage on both sides. Short story I had a stent put in right carotid artery. Just now getting back to normal from the Anesthesia. Surgery healed well, but it took until the next day to wake up from the anesthesia. A combination of time and B6...

Vitamin D deficiency may play a role in the severity of sciatica, with low levels potentially leading to increased pain sensitivity and inflammation. Adequate vitamin D levels may help reduce inflammation and improve nerve function, potentially easing pain associated with sciatica. Also work on choosing food with low omega 6. Omega 6 is inflammatory... -
a deficiency in thiamine (vitamin B1) can contribute to muscle twitching, especially in more severe cases of thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is crucial for nerve function and energy production, and its deficiency can disrupt muscle contraction and nerve signals. Lots of Thiamine a day, several hundred mg, to reverse thiamine deficiency. The usual dose...

I use Listerine. Rinse first to soften the tarter, then brush with Oral B electric toothbrush super sonic. The $15 ones at the supermarket. At 73 I still have all my teeth. While a blood test can measure iodine levels, it's not the most accurate method for assessing iodine status, and urinary iodine excretion is considered a better indicator. Have...

You could try CBD for her instead of THC, although I don't think it enhances the appetite the way THC does. With anorexia appetine is everything. CBD also attaches to the opiod receptors, without the psychotropic effect so it may help with the withdrawal from gluten. There are lots of vitamin and mineral deficiencies caused by Celiac Disease the the...

Gluten in Escitalopram??
Wheatwacked replied to Farmerswife's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hello @Farmerswife As @trents said talk to your doctor about changing to a different drug. I I was given a prescription for Zanax, took one dose and could not sit down for four hours. Twitching all over, and my eyes felt like they were propped open with toothpicks. Perhaps the old standard, often refered to as "mother's little helper" Valium would... -
Once you have removed the inflammatories, it is time to focus on the deficiencies. A lot of them not specific to Celiac, but deficiency in them elicits symptoms associated with Celiac. According to research, celiac disease tends to be more prevalent in urban areas compared to rural areas. Same is true with airborne viruses. Because urban residents...

Do I really need to get a biopsy?
Wheatwacked replied to Ryangf's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Kosher salt is not usually iodized. Shortly after starting GFD in 2014, I realized I wasn't getting enough iodine. Growing up in the 50's and 60's we ate bread that used iodine as a dough modifier so each slice had about 100 mcg of iodine. A sandwich and glass of milk supplied 300 mcg a day. In the 70's they stopped using iodine as a conditioner in...
