ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Tinnitus
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Roy 43's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Roy, to put it more simply, tinnitus is not necessarily a direct symptom of celiac disease (thought it CAN be), but is often directly caused by intestinal damage that was caused by celiac. It is important to note that with celiac disease, you can have intestinal DAMAGE without having noticeable intestinal SYMPTOMS. There are other causes of tinnitus... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Tinnitus
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Roy 43's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, there can be a correlation. Celiacs tend to have nutritional deficiencies due to malabsorption, and vitamin B12 deficiency in particular can cause tinnitus, sporadic hearing loss, headaches, dizziness, etc. Those symptoms together, by the way, tend to be labeled as "Meniere's Disease," but if you look up some Meniere's support sites, there are... -
ARCHIVED Substitute For Condensed Tomato Soup
Fiddle-Faddle replied to pmccall4495's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I just use an 8-oz can of tomato sauce and about a quarter cup of cream, sour cream, or half-and-half. Depending on the recipe, I throw in some garlic powder or dill or parsley or whatever. If it needs thickening, I add some cornstarch or gluten-free flour somewhere else in the recipe--but it usually doesn't seem to need thickening, which is surprising,... -
It depends on what you are looking for with the testing. If you are looking for official confirmation of celiac disease/gluten intolerance, then allergy testing is completely useless, because those are autoimmune disorders, NOT allergies. They won't show up at all on allergy tests. If you are looking for a possible wheat allergy, either in addition...

ARCHIVED Atopic Eczema And Celiac Disease
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Krystens mummy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Interesting timing. I just took my son to a dermatologist today for some horrendous skin rash which seems to include both psoriasis AND impetigo. But this dermatologist totally understands celiac (I know, I nearly fainted). According to him, pediatric dermatitis herpetiformis (considered to be "celiac of the skin") looks exactly like atopic eczema... -
ARCHIVED But He's Only A Child! Corn Starch Too?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to jstbeingamom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you are seeing a difference in his behavior already, then I think it would be perfectly reasonable to stick with a gluten-free diet, NOT bother with an official diagnosis, and never look back. There ARE logical reasons to seek a diagnosis; Ravenwoodglass mentioned that school accomodations are more likely to be followed by teachers if there is an official... -
ARCHIVED Need Advice On Annual Biopsies For Toddler
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Glutenfree4LJS's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
In my opinion, if your child has no more ongoing issues on the gluten-free diet, then repeat biopsies are about as appropriate for your child as they would be for any healthy child. You wouldn't take a healthy child, knock him out, and perform a biopsy every year. That's both invasive and somewhat risky. Not as risky as open-heart surgery, but there... -
ARCHIVED Benefit Of Positive Biopsy?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to emilyanne's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It is not necessary to have an endoscopy to diagnose a hiatal hernia. The most common method to diagnose this is a barium Xray--much less invasive, and it is considered to be just as accurate. -
ARCHIVED Fingerprints And Celiac Disease/gluten Intolerance
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Lovelycherry's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome, Caleonard! You've made some very good points--but did you mean to post them on an 8-month-old thread? Anyway, as long as you've resurrected the thread, I'll throw in my two cents. There is some evidence that nutritional deficiencies can cause differences in the fingernails, and if you google "nutritional deficiencies and skin," there are tons... -
According to the Lyme sites I've seen, the "target" (aka "Bull's-eye rash") is exclusive to Lyme Disease. According to my doctor, Lyme does not show up in tests for 6-12 MONTHS. I'm not an expert in Lyme Disease, either, and to my knowledge, I've never had it. But I know enough people who DO have Lyme to have learned quite a bit. I believe that both...

I'm wondering if Lyme Disease might be a possibility? I know that it can CAUSE gluten intolerance, and other food intolerances. It can also act as a trigger for classic celiac disease. And fewer than half of those who have been diagnosed with Lyme Disease had the famous "bull's-eye" rash, and even fewer recall ever having been bitten by a tick! So...

ARCHIVED Healthy Bread In Five Minutes A Day
Fiddle-Faddle replied to halfrunner's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I actually did something like this just this week, kind of by accident. I had mixed up batter for a loaf of bread, but was just too tired to wait for my bread machine to rise and bake it (it was nearly midnight, and I had to be up at 6:30, and I needed bread for the kids' sandwiches for lunch the next day). So I used enough dough to make 2 quick rolls... -
ARCHIVED We'Ll All Be Eating Gluten In About 15 Minutes...Sorry
Fiddle-Faddle replied to camprunner's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Regarding your friends and family, there are two aspects where you do have some control. While you don't have control over their lack of sensitivity, you DO have control over their ignorance. As said by other posters, you can educate them. The other aspect is COMMUNICATION. Yes, they know you have a problem with gluten. But you can communicate... -
ARCHIVED We'Ll All Be Eating Gluten In About 15 Minutes...Sorry
Fiddle-Faddle replied to camprunner's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You might look into buying a Japanese rice cooker for yourself and another one for your MIL. If you don't already have one, these are wonderful gadgets--you dump rice and water in, plug it in, press a button, and in 25 minutes you have PERFECT rice. We make basmati rice, and add a cinnamon stick, cardomom pod, and a couple of cloves, and it tastes amazing... -
ARCHIVED We'Ll All Be Eating Gluten In About 15 Minutes...Sorry
Fiddle-Faddle replied to camprunner's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I totally understand how you feel. I also agree with the other posters. You have every right to be frustrated at the ignorance and insensitivity of friends and family. But there's a better role for you to play in this scenario than that of the helpless injured heroine. You can be much more proactive here! But that's difficult when you can't see all the possibilities... -
ARCHIVED To Be Tested Or Not?
Fiddle-Faddle replied to Hammod's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hammod, if you are in the US, then testing not only gives you NO advantages, it could also cost you dearly. If you are given an ironclad diagnosis of celiac, then insurance companies can use it as an excuse NOT to cover you or to raise your rates. Since you already know that your symptoms are consistent with celiac AND that they improve on a mostly gluten... -
ARCHIVED Great, So I Have Casein Intolerance Too
Fiddle-Faddle replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it's quite possible that your intestines didn't heal completely from going gluten-free, and that they might now, with the removal of casein, do so. As far as yogurt goes, there are yogurts made from other "milks." Soy yogurt tastes okay, but I think coconut milk yogurt is really good. You could also get a yogurt maker (google yogurt machine?... -
ARCHIVED Just Found Out That I Have Celiac Disease
Fiddle-Faddle replied to chsteele's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Life is much easier with A-M-A-Z-O-N dot com! I buy gluten-free pasta from them in bulk--both Tinkyada and Mrs. Leepers brands are very good, and not much more expensive than "regular" pasta. I buy gluten-free flour blend there, too, also in bulk. I get betterbatter brand, which is pretty much cup-for-cup substitutable for regular flour. www.betterbatter... -
So, there was an article in our newspaper about Red Lobster's new menu. I called them up and asked if they now had a gluten-free menu. The server who answered said, no, they didn't, but that they might be able to come up with something. I asked to speak to the manager, explaining that I didn't want to drag my large family there only to find out that...

I had a great experience at our local Eat'N'Park. I had heard a rumor that they had gluten-free rolls, so I called to find out. I was told that they did, so went there for dinner. The waitress also assured us that they had them. There was a slight bump in the road, when the manager came over to tell us that they were OUT of them. My kids were very...

ARCHIVED Great, So I Have Casein Intolerance Too
Fiddle-Faddle replied to CGally81's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
CGally, I did go through the constant hunger when I was first gluten-free. I also removed casein from my diet because, back then, everyone on the board recommended it, citing studies that showed that gluten-damaged intestines did not heal when exposed to casein. I reintroduced casein a few months later, with no problems. I ate LOTS of steamed veggies... -
ARCHIVED 3 Months Of Gluten Free
Fiddle-Faddle replied to secretsauce's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Most people with celiac/gluten intolerance need to eliminate dairy as well as gluten until their intestines heal. Continuing to eat dairy products can prevent the gluten-damaged villi from healing. Once you've healed, you can try adding dairy back into your diet and see if you react. Some people who are dairy-sensitive and even dairy-allergic find that... -
You do sound like a classic celiac, though certainly many things can cause similar symptoms. I agree with Ravenwoodglass--I think your best bet is to do a trial of The Diet. It's not anywhere NEAR as bad as it sounds--really! I know I cried for two days when I found out--but then I found that there are gluten-free recipes for EVERYTHING I thought I...

ARCHIVED Help...This Was The Result Of My Sons Biopsy
Fiddle-Faddle replied to leecindy417's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There are many possible causes of symptoms like your son's. My son had very similar symptoms--and they did turn out to be caused by gluten. We are lucky that a gluten-free diet is easily do-able, is non-invasive, has no side effects, requires no surgery, no prescriptions, and usually has fast, obvious results. Most of us here had to struggle with...
