  1. The theory re. Rice Dream is that the formula is the same (contains barley) but the labeling is different due to the upcoming new gluten-free labeling law (products containing less than 20ppm gluten can be labeled gluten-free).

I'm wondering if anyone has contacted the company to confirm that the recipe is the same, or if we are just assuming? Sorry, I know there have been a few threads on this already...

Thanks! I guess it's silly to believe a website and carton of a box that says "gluten free"! I just really thought after reading the site, contacting them, and having gluten free on the carton was enough. I guess I'm back to not trusting anyone anymore! :(

(I read on the chocolate chai milk package, it did state that there was 0.02ppm of barley in that one, but not the others.....very strange.)

  2. Horsegirl,

Oh, if I could've reached through the phone and smacked him, it would've been awesome!! :)

I really do not understand why people without the allergies/intolerance are so defensive about it either! It's like they make it a point to pretend it's not a big deal, when it really is! I'm going to continue my hunt for ice cream too!! Good luck!

    Mango04,

You are absolutely right! They really ought to put you on the payroll for this! :D Word of mouth really is the best way to advertise!!

  3. Oh I know, it's absolutely so frustrating!! I liked the Carob Almond by Rice Dream. The last container I bought, did not list soy lecithin on there. On the website, it now lists it as an ingredient. Sooo, I called them, to see if they either A) reformulated, or B) always had it in there and never listed it. The response was...well, horrible. The guy (James) couldn't tell me if it did, or did not contain soy. After he put me on hold for about 10 minutes, he came back just to tell me what I already told him; there is a discrepancy between what is listed on the carton, and what is listed on the website. (the whole reason I was calling!) He then told me, by law, they have to list soy if they use it as an ingredient, with the new FDA standards. But then he contradicted himself and said, "it may have always been in it." Then he proceeded to tell me that EVEN IF I am allergic to soy, it should be ok, because it's not much, and it's not the "bad" protein! OMG I was pissed! So, I asked him, "If I'm truly allergic to it, and need an Epi-pen for soy allergies, it's ok for me to have it?" His answer "sure"!! He's supposedly going to call me back with more info.

I wish I could get the Coconut Bliss too!!

For those that can have dairy....Breyers makes a Lactose Free Vanilla, and there is no soy in it. They told me it would be listed if there was.

  4. Hmm...that's a good question! I guess I haven't really had any other legumes very much. I also think once I cut out soy, well, I've been too scared to try em! I don't remember reacting to them a while back, but I didn't know it was soy I was reacting to back then either; like what you went through. I'd just keep a close eye on it if you do have them, and see how you feel.

As for the chocolate....YUMMY!! :) I buy mine at Wild Oats, and I'm sure a lot of health food stores have them. I am pretty sure there is a link on the sites for where to buy them in your area. (I truly do not trust myself with a case of it either!) Enjoy!

  5. I can not tolerate any soy at all. Even a tiny bit of soy lecithin makes me break out in a rash, sometimes with hives, as well as very unhappy belly. Soy is in everything, in my opinion, it's much worse than dealing with gluten sensitivity. But now that I haven't knowingly had soy for 4 months now, it's amazing how great I feel! (I've had it accidentally a few times, with cc, or just a bad server at a restaurant. Each time I got sick, and got a rash, and was able to trace it back to something with soy.)

Try this brand for chocolate, it's my favorite! Open Original Shared Link

(Make sure to goto the FAQ page, it will tell you which are soy, gluten, dairy free.)

Open Original Shared Link that's my second choice

  6. I know that with gluten, you have to watch what bath products you use. I've found many gluten free bath and body products but a lot of them contain soy and milk. It is especially hard to find a body wash that does not contain soy. Does anyone know if you have to be as careful with soy and casein when using these types of products?

Well, if you get irritated by soy or casein, I'd steer clear of them in everything. I break out in hives/rash whether I ingest soy, or put it on my skin. I've been using the Fiji organics, as there is no soy or gluten in them. I love their pineapple coconut lotion and soap! Open Original Shared Link

(I'd call them to make sure, but I believe they are all dairy free too, as they use coconut for everything.)

  7. I was told the extra mild liquid soap has barley extract. Infact i even read it on the bottle. I hope your using the bar soap, that is fine.

I have a clinique post up here with all the stuff i have found, Clinque is all I wear.

Yes, it is the bar soap; thank you for bringing that up! I didn't realize I forgot to put in that part.

I'll have to take a look for your Clinique post. :D

  8. I've been contacting Clinique and M.A.C., as those are my two favs. Here are the ones I've found out to be gluten free. (Also soy free unless otherwise stated) (Both Clinique and M.A.C. consider wheat, rye, barley, oats, soy and corn to be a gluten, and M.A.C. also includes rice as a gluten)

  9. Hi,

I am starting to think I am soy intolerant too... five years ago an allergy test to soy came back slightly positive and my doctor said because it was so slight to just go off gluten to see if it made a difference... which did work for a while.. but now symptoms are starting to come back and the only thing I can think of is soy. I wouldn't mind trying to go soy free for a few weeks to see if that helps.. but my question is.. what do you eat? haha I'm having such a hard time finding soy intolerant websites/discussion forums like I can for Celiac/gluten free. Does anyone know of any websites? Or have any suggestions? Thanks!

    -Nina

If you had an allergy test that even gave a hint of soy intolerance, I'd sure give it a try!! Honestly, at first, I was really overwhelmed with it all. No gluten, lactose, or soy for me, and the only meat/poultry I eat is chicken. So, right now it's eggs and gluten free toast/cereal for breakfast with fresh fruit, then lunch meat with some Kraft cheese (most Kraft cheddar and swiss is lactose free. If you read under the ingredients, it will say "contains 0gr of lactose per serving.") more fruit and veggies, a Lara protein bar, then dinner usually is BBQ chicken, or any kind of chicken; with brown rice, quinoa, and salad and veggies. For snacks, it's usually some fruit, or sugar free Jello Pudding cups, or nuts. Or I cook a lot of Mexican type foods, with corn products. I love cooking tostadas with chicken and black beans, with some fresh salsa, or ground chicken with Ro-Tel for tacos. Honestly, it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be!! Good luck, I hope you feel better!

  10. I went to my local super Wal-Mart last night, and no luck! They didn't carry any gluten free items. There is a much larger one north of me though, might have to give it a try, those prices you guys listed sure would make it worth the drive!! Just thought I'd let people know it doesn't seem to be "all" Wal-Marts, and this one just opened about 4 months ago, so it's brand new.

  11. Sorry that you aren't feeling well and so itchy!

I can tell you that I've had reactions to antibiotics as well, and it always seems to be two weeks after I start taking them that a rash and/or hives develop. So, that could be a possibility.

I know it did take me a good 4-6 months before my stomach was feeling better after being gluten free. The majority of the symptoms went away within the first two weeks, and then 4-6 months later, I felt immensely better.

As for the skin breaking out, it could be so many things. Could be the "detox" and getting it out of your system, could be from stress of dealing with going gluten free, or it could be a whole new allergy. I guess a food diary and writing how you feel after eating might be a good place to start. I did that, and ended up figuring out that soy is giving me a really bad rash every time I have it. I wasn't linking it together for a while, just because the rash comes out a couple days after having soy products. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon!!

  12. First, I just want to thank all of you for how much you help each other! I've been a member for over a year, but haven't posted yet.

I've been gluten free for almost two years now, and in that time, I guess a lot of my new food choices ended up having large amounts of soy in them. I'd always had some soy here and there, maybe a Starbuck's coffee with soy milk in it, a bit of tofu, but that's it. (I'm also lactose intolerant.) Anyways, reading this post, well, finally made me post! I had no idea soy could affect your skin so greatly! The last year or so especially, I keep getting an acne like rash/small hives around my jawline, a bit on my neck, and upper chest. As soon as I got off soy milks and yogurts, it started to clear up. But I still have some of the acne rash and hives, it's been one month since I've had soy products, so I thought. Didn't realize that some Crystal Light drink mix had soy lecithin in it! Anyways, for those of you who have skin reactions to soy as well as GI symptoms, how long did it take for your skin to completely clear up, and stop itching?? My stomach seems to be doing immensely better, but my skin is still quite itchy, and I'm sick of antihistamines, not sure if I should just "let it work itself out" type of thing. Do any of you remember how long it took for your skin to clear up??
