  1. I almost always take my own food when I go to someone's home. No one seems to mind. If I go to a restaurant, I usually eat salad and maybe a steak if I know the place. I always bring my own dressing. My friends and family do not mind. They know how sick I get. If there's not anything I can eat, I just wait until I get home. I know I'm not going to...
  2. When I first stopped gluten, I went thru severe withdrawals. I felt way worse than when I ate gluten. Luckily, I had a good doctor that kept reassuring me that it would get better. It took about 4 months, but one day I woke up and felt no joint pain and I felt good. Unfortunately, I still had the brain fog. When I gave up all grains, I really turned...
  3. Hi, you don't say whether your husband is gluten free and follows a strict diet. If he doesn't, you may be getting contaminated from him. Even a small amount can hurt you. Any ingestion will affect you. If he drinks beer and you kiss him, you could be ingesting gluten that way. If there's crumbs on the counter, and your food touches them you're getting...
  4. A lot of problems can be traced to grains. Once I went totally grain free, brain fog disappeared, confusion resolved etc. Not all related to gluten. No rice, corn, rice syrup , corn syrup. Basically a paleo lifestyle. Pretty much all neurological symptoms resolved. Not instantly, of course, but within a month to month and a half. I really thought...
  5. Hi, so sorry to hear of your problems. Is it possible to get a blood test where you are to test for celiac? Not invasive. Anyway, I literally felt awful when I stopped gluten. Basically your body is going through withdrawals similar to alcohol. It took a month before I felt better. I was eating gluten free, but packaged foods. About 4 months...
  6. The first thing I would do is check all medications for gluten contamination. I am a pharmacist, so I don't say this lightly. Costco vitamins may not be free of gluten. The main thing that might help is to stop all grains. Read Wheat Belly Diet. This is a book written by a cardiologist. Very interesting. Before quitting grains I was on zantac, e.t...
  7. I also have separate areas for food preparation. I have no support from my husband. Any jars I use are labeled in black letters to not use. I usually wash anything he has washed again. He usually has some frozen dinner. I tried cooking gluten free for him, but he wouldn't eat it. I clean a lot. We also have separate cupboards and shelves in the fridge...
  8. This is very hard. If a label even says made on the same equipment as wheat, I put it back on the shelf. If it says may contain gluten don't even consider it. Follow the shopping model of shop the outer aisles of the grocery store. I am totally gluten/ grain free. It really improved my health. I wasn't eating gluten, but the grains were just as bad...
  9. I think this is a very strange study. What was their diet? Are they allowed to choose their own food? Nothing is mentioned. A gluten free diet can include empty foods like all processed food. Rice, corn, e.t.c. I don't think you can conclude anything from this poor study. People should not make assumptions based on this study. Everyone is different...
  10. When I was diagnosed with celiac disease, iron deficiency anemia was my main symptom. I had thyroid problems and my endocrinologist made me go to a gastroenterologist. When I told him my symptoms, he said he was 99% sure I had celiac disease. The blood work came back positive for celiac. So if you have this type of anemia, try to get it diagnosed
  11. Dear Jamie, If you have been diagnosed with celiac disease, you need to start eating gluten free. I was diagnosed 12 years ago. I remember that when I stopped eating gluten, I felt horrible. I was actually going through withdrawals from gluten. After a month or so, it did start to get better. At 4 months, I finally felt good. I still had brain...
  12. I'm so happy that you were diagnosed correctly finally. You have a wonderful attitude. I was diagnosed 11 years ago. My main symptom was anemia and a thyroid that was uncontrolled. Finally my endocrinologist sent me to a gastroenterologist. Just from my description, he knew I had celiac. Had all the tests. Positive. Long story short, but after 4...
  13. Regarding this for new celiac patients. Make sure you have your own jar of mayonnaise. If anyone else dips into it to make a sandwich or whatever, it's then contaminated. Don't assume that things made with mayo are gluten free. Especially when you go out.
  14. Hi, It takes a long time for symptoms to disappear. Withdrawal symptoms were really bad. I felt way worse at first when I quit eating gluten. Stomachaches, diarrhea, e.t.c. those went away after about 3-4 weeks. At about 4 months, if started to feel a bit better. Not as much inflammation. Still was having brain fog, tiredness. Finally for some...
  15. Keep going gluten free. It takes months to get fully better. Sometimes grains can cause a lot of problems too. I never got fully better until I dropped all grains. Keep gluten free for sure for at least 4 months and see if your symptoms improve.
  16. That's awful. Wheat belly was written by a cardiologist. People don't want to change their eating habits. Such a simple remedy that makes a world of difference.
  17. I'm so sorry for your loss. I think this book saved my life. I don't know if you have celiac disease. If you do, I'd definitely recommend this book.
  18. I was never so sick as when I was first diagnosed with celiac. I stopped eating all wheat etc. I didn't know that I was going through withdrawal. Wheat is very addictive. After the first few months, I started to feel better although not all the way. That's when I read the wheat belly diet book. I eliminated all grains and grain products. Which meant...
  19. Cutting gluten is very hard. I had physical withdrawals for about a month. I didn't start seeing any difference until about 4 months. One day I woke up and I didn't have severe pain in my joints. Sugar is hard to stop. Try to at least use honey or another natural sweetener like maple syrup. Just limit the amounts. At least they have more ingredients...
  20. The first month after I was diagnosed with celiac was horrible. I felt worse than I ever felt before my diagnosis. After following the diet for maybe a month maybe 2, I began to notice lessening symptoms. At month 4, I woke up one morning and felt good. My inflammation and stomach issues were not there. I actually felt good. So keep to the diet, don...
  21. Brain fog is a real and awful thing. When I was first diagnosed with celiac, 10 years ago, I kept having brain fog. I was eating gluten free. By some chance I ran across a book named Wheat Belly Diet. Written by a cardiologist. In it he discusses how eating grains affects the brain. I read the book, and decided to give up all grains. That meant giving...
  22. Hi Tyler, The easiest test to detect celiac disease is a blood test. I was anemic for years. Couldn't get in the normal range. Also had thyroid disease and couldn't get enough thyroid to be absorbed. Brain fog was rampant, thought I was losing my mind. My endocrinologist, insisted that I go to a gi specialist. When I told him my symptoms, he said that he...
  23. Hi, I was diagnosed with celiac disease 7 years ago. I didn't have a lot of stomach problems, but had chronic bad anemia. When I stopped eating gluten, I felt so bad I thought something else was wrong. I kept calling my Dr and he said to keep on the diet and I'd feel better in a few months. Well it took at least 4 months before I felt better. I still didn...
  24. Hi, My first few months after I went off gluten were horrible. I was diagnosed with celiac disease and my doctor just said look on the internet and quit eating gluten. I felt way worse than I ever did when I was eating gluten. I was totally miserable. I kept calling him and he said just stick with it. So I did. I ate gluten free. I did have processed foods...
