  2. Hi. Tomorrow I'm going on a day trip to Charlotte and I wanted to know if any of you know a good place in Charlotte, NC where you can eat nice and affordable food? I know that there's not much time left, but I was hoping that I could find something on my own and I failed... Something "plain" like Sweet Tomatoes would be fine with me...

    Thank you in advance.

  3. Mmmh...I have to admit that I am obviously not as sensitive to gluten as some people but I have spent 21 years (my whole life) in Germany and I have to say that the situation is improving especially since they introduced the new laws for listing allergens. When I came over here I found it really sad when I found out that in the States you only list wheat but not gluten as an allergen.

The public awareness and availability of gluten-free products vary from country to country but if anyone is interested in going to Europe, especially Germany, you can turn to me for further info.

  4. I was looking for some gluten-free soups that I could get at a normal store and read that Progresso has a lot of gluten-free soups. Reading the ingredients I noticed that the ones that seem to be gluten-free have "datem". What is datem? I looked it up on Wikipedia and it says that it has something to do with "building a strong gluten network". Does that mean that it contains gluten? I hope you can help me.

  5. I have to admit that the first couple of times my finace and me went to Sweet Tomatoes here in Raleigh I was pretty "careless" about possible gluten contamination and just picked the stuff which I thought was gluten free until my fiance decided that we should ask them if they knew something about my condition and could tell me about gluten in their food. I was really surprised when they sent for the production manager to show us around. he told me that I could have all salads (apart from the ones with pasta obviousy), the vegetarian soup, the onion soup, the cottage cheese and the frozen vanilla yoghurt with sprinkles. I know that you always have to be careful because there might still be cross contamination but I highly recommend this place because it has a great buffet and a really nice atmosphere.

Here's the link: Open Original Shared Link . They also have it in several other states.

On Easter Sunday we went to Carraba's ( Open Original Shared Link klick on "menu" and go down), which is a really nice Italian restaurant with a special gluten free menu.

  6. Hi everyone! I'm a German student residing in North Carolina and I'm not too familiar with the local products. As far as I know declaration laws for ingredients are a bit different here but wheat has to be declared on the package (in the EU all ingredients that contain gluten have to be stated on the package). Now I read that Butterfinger is gluten-free but on the package it says that it contains cornflakes.

My question is: Did Nestle change the ingredients or are those cornflakes gluten-free?

Another question I have concerns Lindt chocolate. I know that the Lindt chocolate you get in Germany contains barley malt extract but Lindt says that it's gluten free - or at least their supplier told them so - and I heard that malt extract is usually gluten free anyway because of the way it is made.

I'm not an expert on this so I just wanted to make sure that the Lindt chocolate they sell here in the U.S. really contains gluten. (I'm pretty careful about my diet but since my gluten sensitivity is not as strong as with some people the possibility of cross contamination would not necessarily keep me from eating it.)

    Thanks in adavance!
