  1. ok so i need some advice/support/insight/comments/complaints :) ... i've been gluten free for a bit over a year now and am feeling SO much better; however, i do still struggle with bloating and a general "full" feeling quite a bit. i have a few alcoholic drinks every once in a while and i've noticed that the morning after i have a some "D" and then feel really good.... none of that bloated feeling and just a nice, light, "empty" feeling i rarely feel in my stomach/lower abs area. then i read that alcohol is a diuretic (sp?) and i guess it kind of made sense.... anyway, what does this mean?? i'll never feel that way without a diuretic? what's wrong with me....

second, i'm considering doing the elimination diet to see if that helps, but i just don't know if i can manage it. i also don't eat meat and just plain don't know what i would eat! i'm so busy between classes and work and i live in the dorms so i have to have a meal plan...

i hope you guys can give me some direction, you all are amazing....thanks so much, in advance--

  2. hey fellow iowans!!

i discovered an AMAZING pizza that is sold by hyvee stores. it was "invented" by a guy that has a talk show on the radio and the crust is made of cheese. you may have heard about it because i believe he's talked about it on air, but i just wanted to let everyone know that it is completely worth it to try!!! it tastes like a REAL, normal, greasy piece of pizza-parlor pizza!!! :D haha def. not something you should eat on a regular basis...but the best pizza i've had in ages. it's found in the normal freezer section with other frozen pizzas in an orange box!

  3. i crave gluten things too. lately more than ever...don't know why. but i feel like i eat things now that i never ate much of before (i was never much of a chocolate/ice cream person) and now i eat those...usually without even tasting it cause i'm scarfing it down. i think it's like i'm craving these foods i can't have so i just stuff myself with other "bad" things that i can have. i really crave papa john's pizza and a cinnabon or a panera bagel...things you just can't replace...

sorry this isn't much help, but i thought i'd let you know you weren't alone  i'm still trying to figure it out. if i do, i'll let you know :) i'm currently reading "intuitive eating" with makes some good points, maybe you might find it helpful. good luck--

  4. i can relate to being low in $$...college student here... i agree with everyone else, they've given really great suggestions. potatoes are pretty cheap and i use them in all sorts of ways: baked with various toppings (or plain), mashed, crispy roasted in the oven, etc etc. you can add different flavors to make it feel like you're not eating the same thing over and over. i love potatoes. also i eat a lot of bananas and watch for other fruits and veggies when on sale/are fairly inexpensive. rice is also good. a couple of the gluten-free cereals mentioned above go on sale (just got dora the explorer cinnamon stars for 1.19!). corn tortillas are fairly cheap also and they come a whole bunch in a pack. you can make them with cheese inside and do like a taco/quesadilla type thing or i also add lettuce and some cheese and maybe a little dressing to make it like a lettuce wrap or with peanut butter and roll around a banana. canned green beans i aways keep around...may not be as good as the fresh kind but they're like 69 cents a can. i'm sure other canned veggies are similar. i also eat a lot of popcorn. if you can splurge on an airpopper (my dad got a new one cause his old one was crappy, but still workable so i got that one) and if you buy a bunch kernals i don't think the price is too bad. i also get these "thai kitchen" things that are sort of like raman noodles and they are like 99 cents for one (just from target or whatever) and those are a quick lunch.

i'm a vegetarian so i can't help you in that department. i think the bottom line is that you do not need those gluten-free specialty foods. i don't even eat those store bought gluten-free cookies or cakes or things like that. they are too expensive, and besides i'm better off without them. if i need a sweet treat i usually have a fat free chocolate pudding cup thing (88 cents for a 4-pack in the off brand). good luck! and be creative!!

  5. what about a small salad bar that doesn't have any other gluten containing food on it? my hometown there is only one restaurant and everyone always eats there, i'd like to join but am scared of what everyone says about buffets. this one has lettuce, carrots, pickles, cheese, pudding, eggs, and things of that nature. the croutons and that sort of thing are not actually in the salad bar part. i don't normally eat dressing anyway. does anyone think this would be ok if i just ate some of the lettuce with carrots and some shredded cheese on it?

  6. thank you so much! i think i'm going to give them a try this weekend.... but sorry, one more question--does anyone know an addition/variation you could add to this to make them "belgiun waffles"? (i don't know if i spelled that right) i don't know exactly what makes them different than regular waffles.... thanks again!! :D

  7. a few posts back someone asked about a hot cereal. i didn't eat a lot of oatmeal before gluten-free but i found a recipe i loooove that i think similar to it. it is a rice pudding with just milk, rice, sugar, and then i like to add raisins and cinnamon and some slivered almonds. it's really good...but probably not nutritionally sound... hmm... lol :) you can email me or whatever if you want the recipe. kms_10@hotmail.com.

chock one up for me on the envrikids also. i like the fake frosted flakes best.

  8. i may seem like the idiot after all these posts, but the dietition here at my school said not to eat the shredded cheese in the dining center because they have had problems with it in the gluten dept. also i ate at a restaurant in chicago (which was very accomodating) but the waiter did tell me they used flour on their cheese (he opened a new bag for me tho... :P lol ) so i dunno.... just my experiences.

  9. these are all really great so i won't be repetatitve. i do really like the suggestion of a special menu section for gluten-free items. The only different comment i have to add is that if a restaurant has a special/unique gluten-free item, i would be more likely to go there. because lets face it, i can have a plain baked potato at home--with no worries (and probably cheaper... ;) ) so if there is some special item that i wouldn't make at home or get that "special eating out" feeling, i think that is a huge plus (like PF chang's chocolate dome thing or there is an entire gluten-free restaurant owned and staffed by 2 ladies that are celiac...both are about 2-2 1/2 hrs from where i live but i make special trips there just to eat :) ) so yeah, that may seem like a miniscule suggestion but all the good ones were taken... knowledge, CC, etc... :) i'd like to hear about how it all turns out with the restaurant!!

  10. i've only eaten there once because it's about 2 hours from where i live but i'm itching to go back... i ordered the garlic sauteed snap peas and they were SO good. i also got the flourless chocolate dome (which was obviously quite tasty if you're into that :) ) and i didn't have any problems, but i guess my stuff didn't have any sauces on it...i probably would have been more nervous if they did... good luck!

  11. sorry this doesn't have anything to do with wendy's or subway....

but i just wanted to ask the person above me about your picture....

it looks really tasty...just wondering if you made it yourself? and if so could i maybe have the recipe? i haven't had a real waffle in ages....

  12. i'm pretty sure mine is bloating. i've always been a smaller sized person everywhere else (well...except the hips ;) lol) and i workout everyday... but i still have this little like bulge in my lower stomach. it really bothers me and i don't know what do do about it. sometimes it will go away, but alot of times i still mostly have it... hopefully some others on here can share there thoughts/advice/remedies? thanks :)

  13. for my recipes (esp gluten-free cheesecake) i use some sort of ground nut--usually pecans. i sub it equally for the crumbs and still add the Tbsp or whatever of melted butter/sugar. i love it and even non-gluten-free people say it's better than regular crust. i dunno... its something i do that's easier than trying to find all those gluten-free cookies/crackers out here on the prairie :) lol good luck!

  14. hey!

i'm not exactly a "teen" either... but i am a soph in college and was in your same position last year. unfortunatly i didn't get my butt in gear with the dining centers till this year, but the good new is, once i did--they have been really helpful. i started out just emailing the dept of residence and saying i had a severe food issue that i needed to be accomodated and just waited and had no idea what the response would be. in the end they set me up with the school dietition and we worked together to create a menu for the kitchen staff. i don't know the size of you school. mine is decent, but not huge by any means and it turns out there are 2 other gluten free kids. so that's the best advice i can give you for the cafeteria is to just go for it. sometimes they will be more helpful than you thought.

roommates, i don't have one. single dorm and have a single apartment lined up for next year. but i'd say just make it totally clear that you're not going to share utensils or food??

social scene...if you mean dining out, etc. that CAN be kind of tough. check out this website and others for notorious restaurant chains that serve gluten-free stuff and try to hit those. otherwise i'm a huge fan of the plain baked potato. most places i go to they come still whole or in the foil so i know its just the tater! also if you mean partying (which i hope you DON'T if you're a freshman... :P hehe) like other people said, there are options. i do sprite/gluten-free vodka. and i don't really trust the scuzzy college bars too much. sorry this is like a novel...but i just want to help! cause i know how hard it was for me last year and i had no one to tell me where to go from there!! feel free to email me if you want anything else (kms_10@hotmail.com) good luck!

  15. i agree with everyone else. it's so annoying (and almost hurtful) when it's your own family who just doesn't get it. whenever i say something that smells/looks good that i can't eat, my dad always says "oh you can have just a little bit" :o i think that one just down right pisses me off more than any other celiac-related comments. ggrrr (sorry this was a bit off topic...just going with the "venting" part of it... lol)

  16. hey guys!

my mom makes an amazing party mix...BUT it's not gluten free. i know it shouldn't be hard to adapt to gluten-free (nuts, i found gluten-free pretzals) but i'm having trouble finding a subsitute for cheerios and the chex/crispix type cereal. i've looked in all of my local health food areas....so i was just wondering if anyone had any specific brand of those cereals that were good and where you found them? also, are the seasonings ok? worshtishire (yeah i butchered the spelling... haha), and then like garlic powder and stuff should be ok?? thanks in advance for your help guys! hope you all make it safely through the holiday foods! enjoy :)

i'm going on spring break in march to cancun, mexico. this is my first time really traveling while gluten-free and first time ever out of the country... i'm a little nervous. i was just wondering if anyone had any advice/suggestions (aside from bringing an ENTIRE suitcase full of gluten-free food :) lol)?? esp. if you've traveled gluten-free to mexico before...

    thanks for your help!

  18. hey guys--

i've been using burt's bees "honey" lip balm for a while cause i found out it's gluten-free and i really liked it...anyway, the point is: the last couple tubes i just bought seem to have a very different consistency/texture than the first few tubes i bought a few months ago...? i was just wondering if anyone else who uses this regulary noticed a change? because i don't like the new texture, and if it wasn't just me i was going to try writing to burts bees to see what's going on. lmk what you guys thing! :)

    thanks!

  19. before being gluten-free i never had a "sweet tooth"... i was more of salty person and just had the occasional reece's PB cup. NOW, i pretty much devour/crave anything chocolatey. and ice cream too. i also eat till i'm uncomfortably full which i never used to do. before i was bloated from gluten...now i'm bloated from overeating. i read the book "intuitive eating" which is by 2 drs/nutrionists and it is a good concept i think, but i'm still having trouble. i agree with others--if it's there & gluten-free i'll eat it. and also that you just get in a trance kind of. after a binge i'm like, ok, i just devoured excess calories and for what? i barely even tasted it.... it's kind of depressing and i'm trying to follow the concepts in "intuitive eating" (honor your hunger and fullness). but it is hard. however, i do recommend reading the book if you're having trouble with binges. i can give anyone the specifics about the book if they're interested. good luck everyone--
