i agree! gluten-free prices suck! i don't buy much of the processed stuff (never the cakes, cookes, etc) either, but it is still costly! fresh fruits and veggies alone aren't cheap!! plus all the flours are more expensive, xanthan gum, the cereals, etc, etc, etc..........
i'm a poor college student.....i try to get buy on smuggling from the dining center and generic brand fruity pebbles....
-
hey guys!
thanks for all your advice! i went out and bought some burt's bees stuff this afternoon. i got the honey lip balm and some raspberry gloss stuff in the pot. i'm pretty happy with it (it's not quite my lipsmackers... i agree with nantzie--this stuff is hard to give up!) thanks for the help!

so what do you guys use just for like regular old chapstick type stuff??
the lipgloss i was wondering about was lipsmackers. i emailed the people for a list and they said all lip smackers use wheat germ oil. i just loved the stuff cause it was a nice texture, cheap, cute, handy.....etc
anybody use/recommend anything similar to this that is gluten free??
thanks so much, kms

thanks guys....
that's what i was afraid of... *sniffle*

hey everybody!
i'm so excited i had to share! i LOVE the food network anyway, but they just showed this little snipet of like a commercial of a lady talking about gluten and how it's in everything. and then it said she had her own website (glutenfreegirl.com). she makes really tasty looking gluten-free food. it also said to go to foodnetwork.com for more info. well, thats all i just thought it was awesome!

hi jess,
when i read your post i felt like i was reading my own thoughts i went gluten free in feb/march also and have put on some weight (about 10 lbs) but wasn't that big to begin with so it's hard to deal with because you do look different. and no matter what anyone says, even tho i'm not overweight i still just don't feel like myself. i also got into the "oh yay! gluten-free food! food that I can eat!" trap... so i just wanted to share something with you (and anyone else!) that i recently found helpful...
it is a book called "Intuitive Eating" by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. They are two nutritionists who focus on if you are feeling biologically hungary or not. it is not a diet. i had gotten into a rut and tried various restrictive diet methods and ended up binging. this book is about changing that. and about excercising just to feel better. so i have not only been able to back away from food when i'm full, but feeling good working out again too. i don't know if i explained it very well! but if anyone has any questions about it, just pm me or my email is kms_10@hotmail.com. feel free!
have fun at your wedding!
hope this helps,

i'm in college also and find i feel out of sorts sometimes too. i credit it to having to eat out occasionally and not being EXACTLY sure what you're eating because i'm careful with what i make too. my dining center also prepares meals separetly for me and this other gluten-free girl so i know i'm ok there (well, pretty sure). hope you get to feeling better!

wow, i hadn't thought of some of those things...thanks for the heads up!

p.s. i love your picture! it's adorable.

Regarding curly hair.... i have struggled with mine for a long time and FINALLY found products i LOVE. so i'd recommend them to anyone with curly hair (celiac or not) and i have never seemed to have problems with them. they are: Catwalk by TIGI "Curls Rock" Shampoo and Conditioner. I also use the same line of stuff in this wierd pump cream stuff called "curl amplipher"....can't live without it. you can find them in most salons-moderatley priced-but not bad. its about $12 per thing (but they have deals all the time that make it cheaper or get one for free). I also use a little Dove mousse for curly hair. Hope this is helpful!
Also on this note...does anyone know if Benefit "the gloss" lipglosses are gluten free?
thanks! kms

hey skinnyminny!

thanks again!

if you know you will have access to a microwave (somestimes they even have ones in convenience stores to use) i love to take micro. popcorn places. i get the little pop secret 100 cal. bags--they pop up faster and are a perfect snack. also gluten-free trail mix is good. fruits and veggies of course. i also like to wrap some baby spinach, sprinkle of cheese, and a little gluten-free, fat free dressing into corn tortillas. they are good cold. can't think of anything else that wasn't already metioned....the cereal and crackers were good suggestions...
hope this helps!
have a good trip!

hello iowans!
i would love any tips on where to do gluten free shopping...it is harder to do around here:) i was in chicago last week and there are so many weird little shops and things and all the waiters i encountered were very accomadating and understanding.
i see we are all a bit spread out around the state:) but i do make it DSM quite a bit. if any of you are passing through the cedar falls/waterloo area the hyvee in CF has an ok section and sells the best english muffins in the freezer section. there is a health food store (T'N'K) in w'loo that also has a decent gluten-free section.
thanks! and nice to meet you all:)
kms
p.s. oh! and i was in mason city once and stopped in a little health food store there that says they "specialize in gluten free foods" which was pretty good, for iowa anyway:) alot of different things there (seaweed and garlic crackers...sounds weird but were very good!)

hey!
i don't have an "official celiac diagnosis" either. i pretty much self diagnosed after alot of research and trial & error. i talked to my dr. and she said that that was most likely what it is (or at least a gluten intolerance) and she said that since i don't have the "offical diagnosis" she can't put it in my "official records" which is ok i guess cause she said that helps in in the long run for insurance purposes but we know its there. so i wouldn't worry about it. if you makes you feel better, who cares what anyone else says!!

congratulations! that is awesome!!
i did a speech for class once about celiac and everyone was pretty out of the loop, but they asked questions and it feels good to make people more aware. one person in my class even said their mom had it! we exchanged banana bread recipes and best stores for gluten-free food
