  1. Best Material Presents I've Received: Antibacterial gel Handmade greeting card sets Jewelry cup with the names of my students cross-stitched inside the plastic sleeve A stamp with my name in Chinese Plane tickets Overpriced video of me swimming with dolphins that I'd never have bought myself Calendars Matching rings: my mom, my aunt and I got from...
  2. I'm sure I'm not the perfect gift giver, and I don't want to seem ungracious, because these gifts give me great stories to tell and I've often regifted them to people who hopefully appreciated them or could use them. I'm sure everyone meant well upon giving them...almost everyone. I really do crack myself up when I recount them. Here they are in the order...
  3. Since I was out of town with family for two weeks, I ate out once a day, on average. I was kinda excited to visit Steak N Shake and Famous Dave's, Carnivale, and Lou Malnati's Pizza, none of which are available in California where I am. Steak N Shake. Good bunless burger. Not allowed to eat the fries, fryers not designated. GREAT new Strawberry Banana...
  4. I chomped pizza, guzzled beer, savored chocolate fondue, crunched Emeril's popcorn candy bundt cake, sipped Tom & Jerry's, and slurped yogurt shakes. Yeah, Ba-Bay! I think I gained a few pounds! My clothes aren't loose! There's actually a GOOD side to my stepdad having OCD...I got my own miniature butter for my stay and they only use squeezable jelly...
  5. Just an "aha!" first---I CAN DRINK WOODCHUCK CIDER at the bar! YIPPEE!!! Plus, Chi-town has LOTS of gluten-free BEERS I plan on trying out for the first time...I'll let ya know how it all goes! These are important for meeting my goal of not talking or explaining about my diet much on the trip so I can try to take a bit of a mental vacation from my disease...
  6. I just bought some Chocolate homestyle and it doesn't say barley on the label and I didn't get sick. My FAVORITE used to be the 7 minute packet you buy at the store and beat on high with hot water that is super gooey and fluffy. So now, I just eat marshmallow FLUFF.
  7. Best Food: Hushpuppies! Good enuff to make me howl for more! Pralines- gluten-free! Saddest: Couldn't try the famous beignets! Worst Restaurants: HerbSaint--they didn't have the food listed on the online menu! ugh! And it was COLD in there. Dick & Jenny's: expensive food and they use JIFFY mix for their cornbread. (not gluten-free) I got by eating...
  8. Fun Grandma story----my grandma LOVES garage sales and when she moved to a new town she discovered a resale shop type of place called DIG and SAVE which is her new hobby. You dig in 3 foot tall bins full of USED clothes and pay for them by the POUND.So grandma loves to shop for ALL of us there and always has a pile of stuff for me when I visit. I usually...
  9. Yearning for some FRIED fish on my impending trip to New Orleans where it's common to only use corn meal to fry it mmmmm! Emeril is from there and has a restaurant, so that could be cool, too. My cowboy (who is stationed out here in the Marines, but orig. from N'Awlins) informed me that I MUST eat crawdaddy's and SUCK the head. He pantomimed a demonstration...
  10. Chic-Fil-A. MMMMMMMmmmmm Per usual, I didn't have the gluten-free Menu w me, but I decided on a gr. chic. sandwich no bun or pickles or sauce and fries and it was really tasty! It was my first time there and the server was gluten clueless.. didn't have a list or menu of gluten-free options, but she DID tell the cooks no pickles-- so it wasn't her fault...

    Knock On Wood

I think Mario is cute, always have. But his dance was cheesy. Emmitt's music and dance were much cooler. Sorry.
  12. I would imagine that you don't eat enough roughage. Celiacs don't just eat meat, beans, and nuts. We have problems absorbing vitamins from foods, so we need lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits. Most men I know don't eat many vegetables at all. Lettuce, corn, and french fries don't count. Boil some frozen edamame, real pineapple...
  13. Ok. So I'm dancing. Again. and as i gesticulate, my hand flails to the right of me and I encounter something soft and spongy. and I look to investigate, as this is not a common sensation on the dance floor. and it's a large woman (I'd guess 300 lbs.) with a SHORT skirt on with miles of cellulite that I TOUCHED. Inadvertently, of course. Now, really. I'm glad...
  14. Gobble Gobble wibble wobble. Thanksgiving for me is mouth watering memories of biscuits, pie, stuffing, etc. all homemade by Grandma. It's just not the same Gluten Free. Last year I ate with my boyfriend's Irish family. Not only does it SUCK watching everyone else eat the goodies, it REALLY is ANNOYING that there's ALWAYS some celiac ignorant person (in...
  15. People are amazed at my ability to enjoy bad dates. I enjoy the entertainment and ignore the date, or I laugh AT the date, or I creatively and cynically provoke the date to amuse myself. However blunt I am, I am always polite and always offer to go dutch. Some good ones: The guy with the 18" tattoo of Beavis on his back. And to think I thought he was...
  16. OH YEAH. Thought I'd been saving $$ by eating stuff tucked away in my cupboards and pushing back my biweekly trip to the health food store, BUT, instead, my bill doubled. $190. haha I do stock up, but WOW. Got favs like Mrs. Leeper's Beef Stroganoff box mix, Amy's potato leek soup, Barbara's Corn Flakes, my EnerG frozen pizza shells, and Glutino lemon wafer...
  17. My menu yesterday was nothing new or sinfully worth getting sick over: gluten-free pancakes with berries (no syrup), leftover pot roast and veggies, and Tropicana Lemonade. The lemonade has "natural flavors" so maybe that's it? But I drank some earlier in the week and was fine. Oh well. I cooked it all myself. hmmm I must admit sometimes I think I'm sensitive...
  18. Got lilies and roses delivered at work for my bday, which was a surprise. Got some nice phone calls and nice gifts. BUT NO CAKE. A friend put a candle in a gluten-free donut, but it wasn't the same. I'll have to go to the store and buy a gluten-free cake mix. There are good ones out there, but it's not as fun to make it yourself and eat it yourself. Last...
  19. My eye doctor is HOT! He has amazing hazelish eyes...AND I've adored him ever since he told me that I'll never need glasses full time (I wear them to see in the dark or driving at night) because I only have night blindness. And YOU KNOW I love that cuz HOW MANY teachers do you know without glasses? I mean, going through all that college and the graduate...
  20. So the Milky Way made me sick all weekend, but I still managed to go 2 steppin. I haven't had the pleasure in ten years, so it probably wasn't pretty, but it was fun. I'm not big into country music, but I had friends who took me to country bars (cheap beer) back in the college days. AND I can appreciate cute cowboys. They always seem so chivalrous, too...
  21. As you know, I was so excited to get that gluten-free candy list that I had gone out and stockpiled those sweety sweets previously assumed to be not gluten-free, but lo and behold the list said they were fine! Well, I got glutened today. Milky Way. My fault. The list says Milky Way Midnight only. Sorry, I didn't know there was a milky way midnight. I...
  22. Since I am dating and date-able and date-licious, I do eat out a lot. I like Outback Steakhouse, like most others who go my way aka against the Grain, but I have also become adept at ordering sushi, Mexican food, and meat/potato or fish/rice dishes without getting glutened. I also sometimes eat B4 the date and just order a drink and ice cream while the...
  23. Well, I won that Chipotle Restaurant Gift Card, but.... I read up on that place here and then checked out their website and I guess they make things on a line (I've never been there) and they recommend that people with wheat allergies do not eat there. I guess I'll give the card away as an XMAS gift to someone. Oh well. Just got invited to New Orleans...
  24. Amy's Soup. I'd read about people reacting to it, but I had already bought it and some people are allergic to ingredients I am ok with. So I tried some one day and I was fine. Ate the rest the next day (potato leek?)yum. Then I had the tomato kind. I guess I'm just glad I get off work at 3, because I can go home and be glutenly grouchily greenily grumbly...
  25. Yesterday my mom called me to tell me that Katie Couric was having a story on celiac! My stepdad told her he'd seen it. (I was impressed he recognized it as my deal.) So I watched it on TV and then I watched it again on cbs.com. It was great to see my "deal" get some recognition. I liked the little animation they showed of your body inside. I emailed a...
