  1. heehe...our dog was about the same size as the armadillo [obviously!]....he just loved hunting them!

I make mostly angel pins....and sell them in the theatres here. I began my jewelry making business after having to retire on disability from teaching 12 yrs ago. I began with beaded necklaces and it evolved into a little bit of EVERYTHING. Now, to keep things simple, I only make the pins. I make beaded things when I have time.

Hey, Lymetoo, I'm a calligrapher & native Texan too. Is it something in the water? Ink, perhaps?

  2. If it makes you feel any better, we hardly have any mosquitos in Austin, we have the largest urban bat colony in North America living under a downtown bridge! That's 1.5 million bats eating 3,000 mosquitoes a night...

    Makes your job easy :P

Especially since the purple glittery bats need extra mosquitos to be sparkly ;)

I'm totally spinached and pulling a Rachel all this week...

That's right kids, last week of the gluten challenge, biopsy is MONDAY!!! :D:o:ph34r:

You know what that means? Severe gluten overload to do as much damage in as little time as possible while eating things I want that I'll never be able to eat again!

I had a bagel for breakfast, pop tarts for a snack, and for lunch...4 slices of bread, a breadstick, french onion soup with crutons, and now I'm eating tiramisu!

My policy this week is to have gluten in hand at every moment!!! Gotta have an accurate biopsy!!!

Hey, I've seen those Austin bats fly out at dusk! It's really pretty cool. I was born in Austin & have relatives there so visit now & then. It would be a cool city if it weren't so durn HOT! (105 when I visited June before last...)

HURRAY your challenge is almost over!!!!

  3. My wife was also very sick (hospitalized) with our daughter. The Dr thought twins, which made us excited, but we only had the one. The ironic thing, now that I think about it, was that we named her Tasmin (Gaelic for Twin). We did not look at the meanings when we picked it though. We found out that sometimes Hyperemesis (very much up-chucking) can be brought on by the pregnancy hormones for no reason, and gerts worse with each one. However, in Canada they could control it with Diclectin. For some reason it was taken off the market in USA.

That's spooky about the name Tasmin! It's beautiful though, I can see why you picked it.

My docs told me my nausea was due to the increased hormone level with twins, so that could be it... but I suspect Celiac connections anyway, since it also does affect hormones.

  4. I've read some bad things about them too...in fact I bought a couple of books on reflux and they said the same thing...I've also heard a lot of people have problems when they quit taking the meds, which is why I'm trying to get off slowly. I'm taking 1 pill (Zantac75), once per day (instead of 2 times)...and plan to go every other day soon (or maybe half a pill although I don't like splitting them much). At the time the doc said to take them, I was being wakened in the middle of the night with a horrible burning...kind of like being really intensely hungry to the point where it almost makes you ill...that kind of burning--it was constant though--he was pretty certain that the irritation from that is what was causing the cells to look weird in my enlarged ampulla of vater...so we did this test to see if it would change how the cells looked and apparently it did...I sure don't miss the awful burning though.

Do any of you have experience with Prevacid? My doc prescribed a daily pill & I took it for a while & then my prescription ran out. When I stopped I had ferocious burning, WAY worse than before I started, & having been down that rebound road with Sudafed, I've decided I'm not comfortable taking something with such wicked rebound. It might actually be okay if you eased off as you describe, but no one warned me about that....

  5. Yea, this is what I had, too. The only thing I could eat was bread! Or so I thought ... it was a vicious cycle, sick, so eat bread, so get sicker ... It would have been nice to know back then!

With me, for some reason, the only thing that would stay down was dry Cheerios. After the boys were born I couldn't stand the sight of those O's! (They loved them of course.)

  6. Wow. What an appropriate time for me to read this topic. It has been 1 1/2 years since I have been on the gluten free diet. I have been doing so well, never purposely eating anything forbidden on purpose. I had completely lost the urge to eat anything but gluten free foods. Then, yesterday, at a family gathering, someone brought out a homemade apple pie! This pie was bigger than any pie I ever laid eyes on. (maybe that was all in my mind) But it was homemade from bottom crust to the little laces across the top. The vanilla icecream sat beside it and I just felt myself foaming at the mouth. I have never had such a strong urge to cheat. Then, I remembered how I got glutened 2 months ago at a BBQ and how my weekend was ruined and how painful it was. But I just can't shake that feeling I got yesterday, my mouth is watering right now as I think about it......(oh, and by the way, I just ate the icecream!!)

    : )

I can definitely relate to the wish to partake in special celebrations that center around food. The social aspect of this illness is one of the hardest parts. But on the bright side, it's easy to make really good pie crust gluten-free & most fillings can be adapted by replacing flour with tapioca. Now yeast bread.... that's my tormentor. I need to knead!

  7. This is really a toughie. I'm officially diagnosed, & my sister has had health problems all her life that sure sound Celiac to me, but she's resisting being tested. One of my sons also shows some signs. He's 19 & doesn't want to hear about it. Sadly, I'm not sure there is anything one can do to convince someone who won't listen.

My thought is, not to carp on it, because that's almost always counter-productive. Maybe bring it up once in a while, but what I'm hoping is that when they see me getting healthier & healthier it will dawn on them that it's worth considering.

  8. I did a gluten challenge and got so sick, I'm PARANOID about gluten! But, yes, a hot buttered homemade toast sure would be nice. eKatherine, sure do wonder about those biscuits you mentioned- could you share the recipe? I don't know if that's "off-topic", sorry.

Lisa, here's a recipe for you & there are others on the same thread...

  9. Valerian root is another herbal supplement that works as a sleep aid. It also helps with anxiety, which can contribute to lack of sleep. Your body eventually gets used to Melatonin, and you have to keep upping the dose as you go, and there have been studies that link it to thyroid problems. Anyone with an abnormal thyroid should not take melatonin.

The thing about Valerian is it tastes really gross. Make sure you get it in capsule form, drink it with alot of water and try not to burp. It works well though.

My son never had to up his dose, but I didn't know that about the thyroid! That's not good!

  10. Are you sure it was gluten? I had a bout of food poisoning recently that was pretty similar in effect. Or is your mom one of the ones who doesn't believe in cc, that sort of thing?

    Leah

Oh! And I just remembered, years ago I got food poisoning from some raw broccoli. I'd never heard of such a thing but I was told... how do I put this delicately... sometimes the field hygiene is not so good...

  11. Okay, let me know if you still have problems tomorrow and I'll try to help. For me not just this site but a few were a big eye opener for me. <--- good googly moogly... don't think I used correct English...

It just worked when I tried it again. I'm sending the address to my equally javafied brother! (How's that for incorrect English?) Thanks!

Funny I was just on an insomnia thread... giving advice! Hm...

  12. I dont know how people do it...carrying around 2 and even 3 or 4 babies all at once???

I would like mine one at a time please. :D

Actually I was really sick when I was pregnant & when they told me it was twins, my first thought was "Thank God, I'll never have to go through this again!" (I really wanted 2 kids.) Of course the extreme nausea was probably from my undiagnosed Celiac.

  13. My son (19) has had trouble with insomnia & his doctor cautioned against Benadryl because it leaves a "hangover" effect. What really helped him is Melatonin, but the effect isn't immediate, it takes a few days to kick in. It works by regulating your body clock, not by knocking you out.

Oh-- I meant to tell you my weird trick-- I do crossword puzzles in bed. The mental effort is just enough to block out worries (which is the usual cause of wakefulness for me) but not enough to be enthralling & keep me awake the way a good book can! Luckily my DH can sleep through anything so the light doesn't bother him.

  14. I went and researched a little bit, it's got hundreds of compounds, in fact it decreases the risk of Type 2 diabetes and Parkinsons... has enzymes and all kinds of good stuff for you body. I never knew this before I looked it up, it was amazing.

I just heard somewhere that it's very high in antioxidants too! Maybe it's the enzymes that are helping with digestion, I'd never heard that one.

  15. My kids used to tease me because I was always trying some new supplement, food, exercise... I kept thinking I must be missing something to feel so bad, & I was, but only because gluten was preventing all the healthy stuff from getting through. When I was diagnosed it all made sense. My son actually said the other day, "That's why you were always taking so many vitamins, isn't it?"

Just because you don't have the diagnosis doesn't mean you can't try it yourself. Forget the testing & just do it!

  16. time for me to continue on with my rant because well i need to to get crap off my chest before i put a hole into the wall.

Im so sick of eating the same thing everyday im currently living day by day by having to steal money from places (small amounts here and there) i feel awful for it but if i dont i dont get to eat. I can not think of what to eat anymore, i have had the same foods for basicly 2 weeks strait now its either chicken and potatoes or pork and potatoes as i cant afford any other form of meat and then sometimes a salad but lettece is spendy. so basicaly its eggs in the morning and for lunch and dinner its meat and potatoes everysingle day every single night. im so sick of eating like this, im so close to giving up on the diet and just eating normal i almost dont care if i do get sick again hey atleast then i would loose the rest of my stomic and probably die off of this crappy planet and stupid life. To make my day even better, when i was cooking my potatoes (i desided fried tonight) i went to put them into the grease and it exploded all over me, burning hot grease got into my eyes my nose my clothes everywhere, so now i have red burn marks all over me :) wohoooooo. i tried to get food stamps and i aparently make to much money (yay) so i really have ran out of options besides theft, as im looking at my wallet i have enough money for 2 more days worth of food but there is 5 more days tell i get paid :( ugh i hate this lifestyle of living paycheck to paycheck, why cant something good happen to me for once instead of more poop apon more poop.

ok enough of my emo ranting, im gonna go back to cooking my dinner and then jumping off my balcany (joking well for now)

Okay, now Lister, that's not a funny joke! You have to hang in there, things will get better.

And I have an idea... this may sound weird... but you have a balcony & you live in Oregon, that probably means you can grow some greens in pots that will keep you healthier for less money. Chard is easy, keeps coming all winter in a mild climate. Seeds are cheap & it is really healthy. Kale, lettuce, basically any green is growable. (Just stay away from that other grow-your-own!)
