About Me

Scott Adams was diagnosed with celiac disease in 1994, and, due to the nearly total lack of information available at that time, was forced to become an expert on the disease in order to recover. In 1995 he launched the site that later became Celiac.com to help as many people as possible with celiac disease get diagnosed so they can begin to live happy, healthy gluten-free lives.  He is co-author of the book Cereal Killers, and founder and publisher of the (formerly paper) newsletter Journal of Gluten Sensitivity. In 1998 he founded The Gluten-Free Mall which he sold in 2014. Celiac.com does not sell any products, and is 100% advertiser supported.

  1. Celiac.com 01/04/2025 - Navigating dietary restrictions during family meals can be challenging, especially when emotions, traditions, and communication gaps come into play. This recent story about a sister-in-law who added flour to a dish...
  2. Hard to tell, but this is an old recall notice from the USA, so even if it were the same brand, it's unlikely that you would be getting the same batch that had the contamination issues.
  3. Celiac.com 01/03/2025 - Celiac disease, a chronic immune-mediated condition triggered by gluten consumption, has historically been associated with gastrointestinal symptoms. However, as diagnostic methods improve, the disease is increasingly...
  4. Here is a link to the skin version, and the only ingredients are "chicken": https://www.perduefarms.com/en-US/perdue-bone-in-chicken-thighs-pack/60625.html There should also be ingredients and any allergens listed there on the package.
  5. Celiac.com 01/02/2025 - Ensuring equitable dining options for students with dietary restrictions is essential on any college campus. At the University of Pennsylvania, a recent analysis by The Daily Pennsylvanian revealed that fewer than...
  6. I believe I've seen them at Costco still in the shells (in the frozen seafood area), which might be a safe way to go.
  7. A dedicated rack is a great idea if everyone in the house understands and supports the idea, and just to clarify, I didn't recommend just wiping the rack down, but washing it well in soap and hot water.
  8. Celiac.com 01/01/2025 - For individuals with celiac disease, staying gluten-free isn't just a preference or a health trend—it's a medical necessity. However, a recent poll by Celiac.com revealed a concerning statistic: over 20% of celiacs a...
  9. You may want to wear an N-95 mask to filter out any possible gluten, at least when you handle the flour.
  10. It sounds like you've been on quite the journey trying to understand your symptoms and diagnosis. It’s great that you’re planning to consult a doctor for allergy testing, as distinguishing between a wheat allergy, celiac disease, or another gluten-related condition is crucial for moving forward. The fact that you’ve tolerated barley and wheat products witho...
  11. Your daughter's results, along with her symptoms and family history, certainly suggest further investigation for celiac disease is warranted. The low total IgA can explain why some IgA-based tests, like tTG-IgA, are negative, as there's simply not enough IgA in her system for reliable results. The weak positive tTG-IgG is notable, especially with her symptoms...
  12. Thank you for sharing your story—it really highlights the lifelong challenges of living with celiac disease, especially during a time when gluten-free options were nearly nonexistent. It’s heartbreaking to hear about your mother’s struggles and the severe health complications she faced, and I completely agree that more research is needed into the long-term ...
  13. Welcome to the forum. Scallop medallions should be gluten-free, even if they used meat glue (transglutaminase) to make them, and not everyone who has celiac disease will react to meat glue, but some might. The likelihood of scallops containing transglutaminase is relatively low, as fresh or frozen scallops are typically sold without additives. However...
  14. Regarding #1, you'll need to determine this yourself, as there aren't tests to determine this. I had issues with casein/milk during my recovery period, and had to avoid this for 2-3 years after my diagnosis. It can be a temporary intolerance for many celiacs that may go away after your villi recover. There is research that I shared which indicates that...
  15. Celiac.com 12/31/2024 - Ajiaco is a beloved Colombian soup, often regarded as a national treasure. Originating in the Andean region, especially around Bogotá, this hearty dish is made with chicken, a variety of potatoes, corn, and an ...
